Reality Hits Arreola

arreola45354By Warren Cloud: Saturday night’s heavyweight match up between Vitali Klitschko and Cristobal Arreola drew some eerie parallels to last week’s fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Juan Manuel Marquez. When all was said and done, both victories were contingent upon technical superiority and sizable height advantage. But despite Klitchko’s complete domination and tenth round knockout win over Arreola, Cristobal’s geographical advantage and his will seemed to allow more hope for a nearly impossible upset when compared last week’s fight.

The match played out more like a bullfight than a boxing match, with Arreola playing the part of the bull, charging pointlessly against Klitschko the matador, who struck swiftly, then confidently stepped away from the beast that is Arreola. Like a bull in the ring, the animal charged forward, hoping that strength and aggression would prevail, only to come to the dreadful realization that he has been slowed down, bloodied, and weakened.

Cristobal Arreola’s downfall is largely due to his bad work ethic and lack of maturation. As far as training was concerned, Arreola stepped it up for the championship fight, but mixed business with pleasure, which there is no room for in one of the most athletically demanding sports. In an HBO pre-fight profile, Arreola foolishly tried to justify his vices, comparing himself to Michael Phelps.

“If Michael Phelps is smoking weed, then why can’t I have a beer?”

Upon the 10th round stoppage of the fight, Arreola was tearful and inconsolable. Arreola begged and pleaded to the audience and his fans to forgive him. Hopefully Arreola’s shame was not purely based on Saturday night’s performance, but on his unwillingness to give 110% when preparing for a fight. If this fight offers Arreola an epiphany that his talent and likability will not win him high caliber fights, then there still is hope for the young, Mexican-American fighter.

Ruiz didn’t beat Valuev. He whines every time he loses. Like Valuev says, “who is this man, who seems to spend his whole life in court in front of a judge?” Right on, Nik!

  • Don says:

No, one line opinionated posts with nothing to back up your opinion, or even justify it is garbage.

I think Arreola did the best he could do on fight night. I dont think his conditioning played into it at all, as a matter of fact he still looked pretty energetic in the 10th round. What I think he might have lacked in training is studying his opponent better. He seemed to have to clue how to approach at all. I’m not sure what he was trying to do by running Vitali down & then waiting for a punch to try & counter…especially against someone so much faster. I think Chris has the skills he needs to beat someone like Klitschko, & I think he was fit enough to fight, but he needed to spend more time watching tapes of Vitali’s past fights to come up with a game plan.

    ok arreola, start eating again.

John Ruiz is not the best Latino heavyweight boxer! I think Chris needs to shake it off, learn from the experience and take on some one like John Ruiz, David “Nino” Rodriguez, David Tua, Oleg Maskaev, or Sam Peters! fighting any one of these guys and beating them will once again raise his confidence level and get him back in track to a HW shot again!
But he should stay away from Vitali for a while! He should fight Wladamir or the champion of Haye vs Vaulev!
Lets just hope he learns not to balloon up to 300 pounds and then expect to drain all his fat in a few months! That’s not healthy and when you loose weight that way you also loose muscle!

  • melownder says:

In retrospect, Chris should have picked up another kind of fight.

  • Doctor says:

Well done Chris, pick yourself up learn and carry on.

  • will the thrill is an idiot says:

john ruiz would never beat arreola john ruiz is the worst heavyweight champion in histor come one get put down the pipe.

  • will the thrill says:

I actually thought it will be closer than this the way arreola ran his mouth with confidence ,,but i guess he learned that in the big leagues you train hard close your mouth and get it done,,that still leaves JOHN RUIZ AS THE ONLY LATINOI HEAVYWEIGHT AND THE BEST IF YOU ASK ME ,,HE FOUGHT THE RUSSIAN GIANTS AND BEAT GOLOTA BUT LOST 2 CONTROVERSIAL DESCISIONS TO THE OTHER ONE WICH I THOUGHT HE WON,,BUT RUIZ WAS QUIET NOT A TALKER AND HES STILL THE ONLY LATINO HEAVYWEIGHT ,,2 TIME AT THAT,,
