By Amar J Khan: I have been reading so many articles on how Miguel Cotto is going to destroy Manny Pacquiao, the number one ranked pound for pound king. What people seem to make referencing to is the heart and spirit of Cotto. Sorry, but that alone won’t win the fight and I don’t see Cotto winning this fight at all.
Honestly, how is Cotto going to defeat Pacquiao when Ricky Hatton, who absolutely destroyed Paul Malignaggi in a one sided fight, could not? I know Hatton messed up by not following the plan of his coach. And for what it is worth, I actually do think Hatton would of won had he followed the plan of his coach, but that is a story for another day.
My prediction is the in and out movement of Pacman will be the deciding factor. Manny is devastating coming and launching quick and accurate punches with power and then moving out of harms way. If Cotto tries to fight with Pacquiao, I think we will see another Hatton job done on Cotto.
Cotto won’t win this fight on points as the speed of Pacquiao will give him the edge over that department, so what will defeat Pacman? The answer is pure boxing skills, something Marquez used very effectively against Manny. Had it not been for that early knock down since Marquez starts off cold, Pacman would have lost that fight.
I see the early part of the fight being key. If Cotto opens up and tries to fight head on with Pacquiao, I really do see Pacman knocking him out. If Cotto remains defensively sound, I think Pacman will win around the 11th round by knockout when Cotto becomes desperate as he will be behind on the scorecard.
After reading this you all are probably thinking I am biased towards Pacman. Well I am not. I think Mayweather, when or if he fights Pacquiao, will win the fight comfortably. Mayweather has everything Marquez has but adds more with his sound defence, movement and speed.
Just to end, I really do like Cotto and I am not having a dig at all those people praying Cotto wins, but seriously what are you lot thinking? Just look at Cotto’s previous fights. Even Hatton would beat him. Oh, and something for the Hatton fans. Hatton has been seen training in his gym. However, he refused to give me an interview after finishing.

Cotto can not get that eye busted again either, its not good fighting out of one eye against a speedster. Although he did a hell of job against Clotey with blood blinding his eye he showed what a true warrior he really is, +1 for Cotto, props and hats of to Mr. Cotto for that

Howabout giving Malanaggi a chance to bust up Chavez, now thats an undercard worth watching, being that Pualie got robbed his last fight in Texas! Maybe he did’nt win but definatly got the dookie end of the stick with the scoring. That could have and should have been a draw at the least! The down side of boxing at its very best..

I’m a fan of both fighters and i’m on the fence on this one, that being said, the Pac’s corner does have a masterful Mr. Roach who may make the difference in his way of bringing out the flaws in any fighter! Exploiting these flaws may be a down side for Cotto who on the other hand does not have the same trainer he had in the past, that in my oppinion may be the difference in a now and not back then fight. I’ve followed Pac for quite some time and love my native Puerto Rican fighters but this is definately a tuff call…

I respectfully disagree with this article….Whilst Pacquiao is a good fighter i believe he will crumble under the crushing power that cotto brings to the table…..Its True that Size has proven to mean nothing to Pacquiao, but im sure A man in his prime and hitting as hard as cotto does has to account for something. In no way shape or form am i a pacman hater. I think when it comes to work ethic and discipline he is second to none. But that alone will not win the fight for him. Every man has his limits and i truly and honestly believe Cotto is pacmans limit…..I wish the best of luck to both fighters…..
How can you say Cotto does not have a chance? I guess you forgot when Cotto beat Suga Shane, as matter fact he out boxed him. He had a quicker jab then shane. and before you say it, yes Mosley is not the same as he used to be but this is a man that just knocked out Antonio Margarito. Where in the hell Aaron has being watching Cotto fights? This guy is a fool. If you have seing Cotto fights you should remember when he fought Saab Judah. Basically he destroy Judah and that was when Judah was still Judah. Also, I wonder why Moseley didn’t try to go fist to fist on his fight against Cotto, by the way Cotto won. And don’t bring Margarito the cheater. It was obvious that he didn’t got the power in his fist to do the damage that he did on Cotto with his plane hands, gloves and regular wrappings. Cotto has never said no to competition and definately Mr. Khan after the fight last night of Mayweather and Marquez you really have to realize that weight matters. Cotto is a natural 145. He can do the weight with no mayor effort, but don’t worry about the last official weight. If you have seing his fights, you should had seing Cotto weighting on the last official weight the 145 lbs. already stablished for the fight and coming up the ring on 154. By the way also talk about strenght. Have you seing Cotto during training? Apparently no.

If anything one can argue that his resume is even more impressive than Pacquio’s, Mayweathers, or Ricky Hatton’s. He’s fought basically every top welterweight & doesn’t need to use a catchweight crutch like the other three mentioned fighters.
Cotto would have easily DESTROYED a washed up De La Hoya & Ricky Hatton. Could Mayweather or Pacquiao have defeated Margarito, Clottey, or Mosely at welterweight? Doubt it.
IMO Hatton never deserved a shot at Mayweather or Pacman but I’m glad he was exposed welcome to the good old USA where there are elite fighters not push overs.

StevieG Marquez is a good fighter but to say Clottey is over rated is a stretch. To say Manny would beat Clottey let along knock out or even down is ridiculous. Clottey with his size, speed, & defense is a fight Manny would never survive let along take as well as Margarito. Cotto doesn’t duck opponents nor fights with an advantage. He’s a true warrior & beat Clottey with ONE eye I watched the fight a # of times & the close rounds go to the champ. He only beat him by 1 point IMO but a wins a win especially with his disadvantage having that cut. Clottey couldn’t Cotto away becuase he was a bit damaged from body shots & feared getting knocked down or out. As far as Margarito’s concerned I believe that Cotto’s a much fighter all around besides the chin, stamina & obvious size advantage Margarito posses. It makes sense Margarito would cheat especially if he did it against Mosley. Lets not forget this was AM’s big shot being an avoided fighter & probably his last Cotto was also undefeated. It was a Mexican Puerto Rican rivalr match with a belt & life changing opportunity for him. Why would he cheat against Mosley & not Cotto? Cotto’s face has never been that damaged or sustained a cut in any brutal fight he’s had & trust me he’s had plenty. AM was accused of plaster paris & not just a few particles thats why his punishment was harsh but IMO not harsh enough.

Poorer version of Hatton. First off Cotto beat a much better version of Malignaggi than Hatton faced. You should learn about boxing and how trainers make a difference, Malignaggi going with Buddy McGirt was a horrible choice of trainers. McGirt changes fighters instead of just adjusting their strenghts. Hatton is a straight ahead fighter that throws wild looping punches, while Cotto is a cut the ring type of fighter who knows how to pressure and knows how to come in at angles. Pretty obvious you don’t know the fight game from this article alone and god only knows why some publication would ever even hire you to write less than articulate article.

Amar J Khan just for your information, the fight against Mallinaggi was after the accident Cotto had in a motorcycle, Cotto almost broke his arm. In Mallinaggi fight Cotto stop punishing Mallinaggi because he had already won the fight, if you watch the fight, on late rounds he had his arm down, he was in a little pain.

As for this upcoming fight, I think its a toss up and either fighter can win. However, I think if Manny tries to turn this into a slugfest, like the Manny of Old instead of boxing smart he’s going to be taken to the cleaners. Hatton was never a strong welterweight anyway, he was best at junior welter. Hatton isnt as hard a puncher as Cotto and his punch resistance isnt as good as Cotto’s i think. Also Cotto is good at changing his stratagy during a fight. Im a huge Hatton fan but to say Cotto is a poor version of Hatton is just stupid.

Amar, I think that you have expressed your honest opinion based on your careful analysis between Pacquiao and Cotto.
My only take on this matter and I say that I am not an expert in any way about boxing is that when Pacquiao fought Diaz he was given a very slim chance of winning because of his size. And when he fought against Oscar de Hoya it was even more obvious to a lot of people that he was sure to lose because of De la Hoyas size and experience in the ring. And the same thing was being proclaimed when he fought against Ricky Hatton. We all know what happened to those fights.
But I think that if manny Pacquio can maintain or even increase his speed a bit and stay out of reach of Cotto, he will dominate the fight.
But I agree to some that Cotto has the puching power that non of Pacmans prior opponents have.

Cotto destroyed maliggnagi he broke a bone in his face and I believe he also broke his jaw. Maliggnaggi himself says Cotto is the best fighter he has faced and the hardest puncher, he also is predicting that cotto will beat pacquiao. Also cotto does not walk into punches like hatton and is a much better boxer who can change styles mid fight, very unlike hatton.
