News – Fury-McDermott bout faces probe

mcdermott32434By Steven Wain: According to BBC sports the fight between Tyson fury and John McDermott, which took place on 11th September in Brentwood England for the English Heavyweight championship, is going to be investigated by the British Boxing Board of control after a controversial 98-92 point victory for Fury. The bored will meet on 23rd September.

McDermott’s promoter Frank Maloney said he will be asking the BBBofC to either rule the bout a no-contest or to overturn the decision and give McDermott the win and with it his English Heavyweight Title.

Now I no that Maloney and McDermott are both furious over the decision, but do they seriously think the BBBofC is going to do anything?

Remember when all the controversy about the Valuev VS Holyfield fight when Valuev won by a controversial majority points victory and the WBA said they would investigate to get people off their back, but nothing came of it, and that was a world title fight so don’t be expecting anything major over a English title fight.
The most the British Boxing Board of control will probably do if anything is order a rematch, nothing more and nothing less.

In the same news Frank Maloney has said the BBBofC has told him his comments about referee Terry O’Connor have been noted, but he still insists that he stands by what he said.

It’s a bit hard to compare this fight to the Valuev vs Holyfield bout, as three’s too many different points to it.

    - O’Connor’s background. This includes his past fights as a pro, in which he lost a 5th round KO to one of Maloney’s fighters some years back and that fighter happened to be in McDermott’s corner, as well as his other dubious decisions.

    - This fight was not as close as the Valuev vs Holyfield bout. Also, that bout was for a world title and any ratifications made afterwards would of had big ripples through the boxing world. It would of set a standard. This bout however was only for the English heavyweight title and therefore anything about it afterwards would have little effect on anything but the domestic scene. It would also put the board in a good light, something they would want.

    - Maloney paid a record purse to get the fight, so he won’t sit back and allow himself to get screwed over. Not only that, he was the main promoter and paid a lot of money to promote the fight, money which wouldn’t of been funded with the loss.

    - There was a lot of heavy betting before hand, mostly by gypsies. This could have a domino effect of problems, although the majority of this heavy betting was in favour of fury (coincidence? I think not)

BBB of C should stop letting the ref judge , the should use 3 judges , not perfect but less of a problem.Ref is so close to the action he can misread it

Just wondered. I didn’t get a chance to see that fight so I couldn’t say if it was boring or not.

  • Steven Wain says:

Connie nope it wasn’t it was my fault

  • RMC says:

It would be nice if boxing and especially British boxing sent a message out that this type of daylight robbery will not be tolerated, it may only have been an English title fight, but McDermott trained hard and had most likely lost before he even stepped into the ring. I don’t like Maloney, but I do think Terry O’Connor needs to be held accountable and his motives questioned.

Was “the bored will meet on 23rd September” an intentional typo?

  • ALAN BOSWORTH says:

ur rite steve all the bbbofc will do is order a rematch, they wont do anything else.or else every one will b jumping out the woodwork.it shud b a no contest and a rematch.

  • Michael Payne says:

maybe that idiot scott should read this. If the BBBofC are investigating it then they must think the score was way out, or does scott know more than them as well????
