Marquez Wants Bout Against Hatton – News
By Eric Thomas: Golden Boy Promotions is looking to set up a bout between lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez (50-5-1, 37 KO’s) and Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s). Marquez, 36, as well as his trainer Nacho Beristan, are very interested in setting this fight up next if possible. The bout, if it does take place, would be at light welterweight rather than Marquez’s lightweight class.
Marquez is just another one of the long line of potential opponents for Hatton. Marquez would be a good fighter for Hatton to get back in the ring against because Marquez appeared weak and slow in his lopsided 12 round decision loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 19th.
It would probably be a fairly safe fight for Hatton to take if he was worried about being knocked out again. Marquez, more of a super featherweight than a true lightweight, would likely be too small to trouble Hatton much and would have problems with Ricky’s power shots on the inside.
However, Hatton is lacking motivation right now to get in the ring. It’s unknown whether he’s looking for a suitable – read: beatable – opponent or just an urge to get back in there against somebody. Hatton certainly isn’t hurting for money after making a huge amount of money in his fights against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao. Hatton, unlike other fighters, doesn’t need to stay active to keep putting bread on the table, because he’s already set for life with the money he’s made in the sport.
This, along with his recent poor performances against Mayweather, Juan Lazcano and Pacquiao, are perhaps the main reasons why Hatton isn’t so quick to get back into the ring at this time. If Hatton were to take Golden Boy’s offer for a fight against Marquez, this would be a fight that would interest a lot of fans.
Marquez would being in a lot of Mexican boxing fans for a pay-per-view bout, and despite his thumping by Mayweather earlier this month, Marquez remains a very popular fighter. This would be competitive fight, even though I see Hatton winning most if not all the rounds. Marquez would make it tough on him by brawling the whole time and not backing down to Hatton’s superior fire power.
Hatton hasn’t fought in four months, and it’s important that he not stay out of boxing for too long. Smaller fighters like himself can’t afford to stay inactive for long periods of time without losing a lot of their skills through inactivity. For a fighter like Hatton’s its even more important that he stay busy because he has a tendency to eat and sometimes drink a lot, causing him to put on weight.
If Hatton gets too big, it might become impossible for him to make it back down to the light welterweight division without him starving himself and becoming weakened in the process.

What exactly makes a smaller fighter lose their skills quicker than a larger one? Did you think about that before you wrote it?
like to see marquez and pacquiao three onces and for all.
Pauly I believe for the record Pac Man won the last Marquez fight by points. The first one would have been a loss for Marquez if there had been a 3 knockdown rule. I’ve seen guys lose for having 3 flash knockdowns in round 1. As for Hatton vs. Marquez happening I think it would be a closer matchup than Marquez vs. Mayweather by far but not if Hatton doesn’t have the desire to fight on. A fighter needs to want to fight. Some guys do and some guys love the check.
Marquez need a great opposition to gain to shot to pacquiao read this

‘jones’ you’re an idiot..
post something intelligent or stick to colouring in with your crayons. A two weight world champion, No.1 LWW for 4 yrs… All you can say is that hatton is a ‘bum’…
I wonder what you have achieved in your life that puts you in a position to post that…
GROW UP!!
jones is a nob a tit a c~@t
evry 1 knows marquez beat pacman all ye have to do is watch the fights even with the 3 knockdowns ime a boxing fan i like both fighter ime sure you are a pacman fan
pauly says: beat the pacman twice??marquez be hom i dont c that on marquez record dude u on drug’s!?
JMM is Manuela Peerez’s boy. They’re both sour/sore losers…LOL
I Remember before the pacman and hatton fight everyone mentioning this weight issue and look what happened to Hatton, Dont get me wrong i like Ricky hatton due to the fact im English but this would be a very dangerous fight for him, 2 Brawlers, Marquez being an extremely good counter puncher, I Think Marquez would win this. Hatton as shown he cant mix it with the best and please dont mention tyszu and castillo becasue there careers were over along time before he fought them.As i said he as shown he cant mix it with the best and i think fighting Marquez would prove this.
why do they want hatton any way.First they know they can beat hatton secondly they only want hatton because hes the cash cow marquez wants another big pay day cus fighting anyone else wouldent pay sh..t.
This would be a good fight. I would have to pick Marquez by KO in the 9th or 10 round. I feel that Hattons 2 KO losses have affected his psyhe. He no longer has that sense of invunerability.
hatton wins this allday long
Hatton would win hands down……..
im not evan interested in this fight at all!!!
nither will ricky…..ricky will knock him out or punish him for 12 hard! rounds……JMM should go back to light weight and fight valero now that is a fight id PAY TO SEE!!!!!!!!!
bout you guys?
marquez vs valero ???
Should be in the bag for Marquez. Sure you may argue that Juan Diaz gave JMM hell, Hatton doesn’t even half of Diaz’s boxing skill or defense for that matter. Hatton’s too one-dimensional and should be easy pickings for JMM.
Seeing how Juan Diaz’s style pressured Marquez alot, I think Hatton will make it a VERY interesting bout.
I’m actually 50/50 on this match.
I’m sorry but i’m going to use your article to comment about Manuel Perez because he or they were erasing it. I hope you don’t mind.
The Philippine is in the state of calamity due to storm ondoy, I’m just wondering how Perez feels about the filipino victims since he hate Pacquiao and all filipino boxers. Did he feel glad about it? just wondering!
Thanks Mr. Eric Thomas
come on marquez has this in the bag and by the way hatton is the brawler while marquez is a boxer/brawler/counter puncher.
Hatton is a brawler so I think marquez would make a good performances against hatton. Unless his age and weight will affect him.
The skeptics should shoot their mouths off after
they have been the number one ww in the world for four years.
this guy has been a joke since he fought juan urango! watch on youtube where urango hurt him on more than one occasion…
marquez will murder hatton. marquez punches way too hard and hatton’s aggresive style will land perfectly on marquez’s counterpunching style. I think knock out early in the fight.
I do not think Hatton should take this fight at least not yey. he needs a warm up fight against a week opponet to get his confidence back.Just remember Hatton’s only 2 losses are two the best p4p fighters in the game.Hatton should maybe fight Khan or a rematch with Urango to capture a belt……
the fat guy should just hang up the gloves like ye said he does not need the money yes said the same about pacman hes to small ye right
how can you say hatton can beat marquez so easly this is the guy that beat the pacman twice he is still should be pound 4 pound number 2 and hatton is the brawler he still has not learned that you cant eat and drink what you whant easy win for marquez hatton fans have not got a clue
