macklin3434By Steven Wain: Matthew Macklin (25-2-18 KO’s) captured the vacant European Middleweight title last night at the Manchester Velodrome, with a devastating first round TKO win over Amin Asikainen (26-3-17 KO’s). Macklin who is promoted by well known boxer/promoter Ricky Hatton was a close favorite with the book makers to win, but nobody expected such a devastating win especially against such a world class puncher as Amin Asikainen.

In the first round Macklin caught Asikainen with a fierce and extremely accurate left hook which put down the Finnish boxer, who looked drained and confused. Amazing and with a lot of courage Asikainen got to his feet and the fight was allowed to continue.

With Asikainen looking shaken and his legs looking weak Macklin went in for the kill, and it wasn’t long before the brave Amin Asikainen was back on the floor again this time after being hit with a right to the head. However amazingly for the second time Asikainen got up, but as Italian referee Luigi Muratore was counting the Mandatory Eight count, his eyes were staring into space.

Before the count could finish Mr Muratore called a halt to the contest at 2:34 on the official clock deeming Asikainen unfit to continue, and giving Macklin his 8th straight win and the vacant European Middleweight title.

This win has opened many doors for Macklin and even a International Boxing Federation world title fight against champion Sebastian Sylvester, Macklin insisted a fight with Sylvester would be “an easier fight than tonight.”
