Kessler-Ward, Abraham-Taylor & Dirrell-Froch – Super Six Tournament Preview
By Sean McDaniel: With only a month to go before the first part of the Super Six tournament begins, the build up for the fights between Mikkel Kessler vs. Andre Ward, Carl Froch vs. Andre Dirrell and Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor are already starting to heat up. All of these fighters are hoping to look good, make a good impression on world boxing audiences and come out of the tournament the winner and perhaps a major star in the boxing world.
World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch (25-0, 20 KO’s) will be putting his WBC title on the line against American Andre Dirrell (18-0, 13 KO’s) on October 17th, in Nottingham, England. Dirrell, 27, a 2004 Olympic Bronze Medalist for the United States, isn’t expected to be one of the finalists in the Super Six tourney and finds himself against one of the biggest sluggers in the competition in facing Froch.
Dirrell has fast hands and is similar to recent Froch opponents Jermain Taylor and Jean Pascal in that department. Dirrell, however, has better stamina and size compared to Pascal and Taylor. Froch was able to beat Pascal and Taylor by wearing them down to a state of fatigue by pressuring them through 12 rounds. Dirrell may be a tougher nut to crack for Froch, because Dirrell has thus far shown that he can move around the ring with ease without tiring like Pascal and Taylor.
Additionally, Dirrell has good power and doesn’t slap with his punches the way that Pascal did in his fight with Froch. This is a fight where Froch will have to try and pin Dirrell down or else he’ll end up getting badly out-boxed by the American.
Froch has the advantage in the power department, but Dirrell is the much better boxer, is the bigger fighter with the longer reach and moves better than Froch. This may come down to Froch having to knock Dirrell out to win. If it goes to decision, Dirrell will likely win because of his speed and ability to put his punches together better than Froch.
Prediction: Dirrell by 12 round decision
Arthur Abraham vs. Jermain Taylor
Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Jermain Taylor (28-3-1, 17 KO’s) is struggling with his career and has lost three of his last four fights. It doesn’t get any easier for him in the Super Six tourney as his first fight is against former International Boxing Federation middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KO’s), who recently vacated his IBF title to move up to super middleweight.
Taylor, 31, has the advantage over Abraham in hand speed, work rate and a slight advantage in height and reach. Where Abraham comes out on top is in the power department, chin and stamina. Abraham has big power and tends keep his power late in his fights.
Abraham also has an excellent chin. Taylor is working hard on his conditioning in Houston, Texas, but it remains to be seen whether Taylor can make any improvements in that area. If Taylor can, that would be a good start for him. Still, Taylor’s chin is a big question mark because he’s been stopped in two out of his last four fights, losing to Carl Froch and Kelly Pavlik by knockouts. Taylor was also hurt in his rematch with Pavlik a couple of times in the fight.
If Taylor can stay away from getting involved with any big exchanges with Abraham, he might have a good enough jab to get the win. Taylor is good with combinations early and might be able to build up a big enough lead to coast to the finish line. However, Taylor tends to go into shut down by the 6th, as he tires out. Taylor is going to have to be able to win at least two of the remaining six rounds in the second part of the fight if he hopes to beat Abraham.
Prediction: Taylor by 12 round decision.
Mikkel Kessler vs. Andre Ward
Unbeaten American Andre Ward (20-0, 13 KO’s) will be challenging for the World Boxing Association super middleweight title of champion Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KO’s) on November 21st, at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. Ward, 25, will be fighting in his home city of Oakland, in what will likely be a sell out crowd. Kessler, 30, is considered to be the favorite in the Super Six tourney.
However, Kessler will be facing probably the toughest fighter of all six in Ward. This is going to be a very tough fight for Kessler, who looked very average in his 4th round TKO win over Gusmyr Perdomo on September 12th. Ward, for his part, stopped Shelby Pudwill in the 3rd round last Saturday night and looked very good in winning.
Ward is the whole package. He has excellent speed, power, movement and defensive skills. Kessler has fought only once in the past year due to contract problems with a former promoter. Ward is the younger fighter, with better hand speed, defense and punch variety.
Kessler has faced lesser opponents than Ward through most of his career and was beaten by his best opponent Joe Calzaghe. Look for Ward to outclass Kessler and ultimately embarrass him.
Prediction: Ward by lopsided 12 round decision.

looking foward to this torney!
frotch-direll,i hate sitting on the fence but tis one is 50/50 for me,if frotch doesnt pin direll down in the late rounds and land with some big shots direll will win by ud ! and i dont think it will be close.hope froch can win it,good luck to him
abraham-taylor,taylor by ud he will be far to busy for abraham, taylors stamina will not be an isue as abraham will have nothing left by round 10
ward-kessler,kessler ko 8-10 but ward will put up a good show for the first 5 rounds
Sorry but i disagre, i beleive the Americans will finish bottom three of the 6!
Must be an american. An American fool.
Dirrell may win, but only cos Froch is well over-rated, but he could still beat Dirrell. Late Stoppage either way.
Taylor is past it and Abraham is quality, so a 9th round KO for Abraham.
Kessler will stop ward. Probably about the 7th round.
Disagree,
Froch to KO Dirrell.
Abraham to KO Taylor.
Kessler to UD Ward.
The Yank boys are in for a rough time.
The trouble with the internet is that anyone can hold themselves out as a boxing writer, even if they have only seen a couple of fights. This guy’s ridiculous underestimation of Kessler beggars belief. Its the same sort of rubbish that Calzaghe had to put up with prior to the Lacy fight. Kessler will be a far different prospect to the boxer that rusty in his first fight back.
froch ko 7-10th round
abraham ko rnd 9
kessler decision win points
the yanks get spanked throughout the whole tournement for sure froch to win overall kessler in 2nd abrham 3rd
WOW you really are a biased american who thinks there boxers are the best in the world. I will give you Dirrell over Froch but a washed up
Taylor will get KO’d buy Abraham and Ward doesn’t stand a chance against Kessler.
dirrell vs froch = dirrell UD by 3 or 4 rounds
taylor vs abraham = no idea could go either way
kessler vs ward = kessler KO 7 or 8
I would have the kessler fight 50/50 if ward had more expirience and proved he had a good chin
Ward to win by lopsided decision? No.
Kessler will win probably by UD but possibly by late stoppage.
Froch I think might have to repeat what he did last time, be behind on points because his defence is open and then stop him late.
I think Taylor loses to Abraham due to his stamina issues.
Im sorry but this yank is seriously deluded if he thinks all 3 americans are going to win, they’ll be very lucky if 1 wins. My predictions are:
Froch v Dirrel = Frock T/KO win rounds 8-10. Power will be way to much for the extremely overated dirrel.
Abraham v Taylor = If Abraham really pressures Taylor then a 10-12 T/KO to Abraham. If however he sits back then i reckon a UD to Taylor.
Kessler v Ward = Kessler T/KO rounds 6-8. Will be way to strong for Ward. Whilst Ward may be fast Kessler has proven he has a strong chin.
My predictions are.
Froch V Dirrell = Froch KO/TKO round 8 onwards he’ll drag Dirrell into a war.
Abraham V Taylor = SD victory to Taylor but it’s going to be a close fight.
Kessler v Ward = Kessler KO/TKO. Just like Froch v Dirrell. Ward will start well but Kessler will hunt him down and stop him late on.
My predictions are,
Froch Vs Dirrel= Froch TKO 7-10. I see Dirrel winning the opening rounds and Froch eventually catching up on him and wearing him down.
Taylor Vs Abraham= Taylor UD. He is a far superior boxer to Abraham and could win this easily unless his stamina fades and he stopped late on.
Kessler Vs Ward= Kessler TKO 7-8. Ward hasnt faced anyone with the skill of kessler. Ward is faster but Kessler has a better jab, stronger and a better chin.
Gd article for people that no nothing about boxers lol I dont mind people sayin how gd americans are if ther proven like mayweather, but these guys r fortunate to b in the comp. So a comment like watch out for ward to embarras kessler is as much of a joke as this article
All americans winning? Very unproven as well??? I agree that dirrell can win a 12 round ud BUT can he handle the pressure? i dont think so so im going for froch ko rounds 10-12. Abraham loses a decision over taylor or kos him depends on jermaines conditioning. And kessler wins UD or ko, can’t see ward winning this one he is very unproven and kessler is the best in the division by a mile. Very underated power and speed. Look for a big shock come fight night.
Nice unbiased article by a fool!
A well written article but I agree with Shadwell and that Kessler will beat Ward. He and Froch are for me the definite stand out fighters in this tourney.
Why Kessler? He has faced the more difficult opponents and gave Calzaghe the most difficult fight of his career I think he has too much firepower for Ward and will win by UD.
Good article but I have Froch winning by late stoppage once they get into the championship rounds, I agree with the Taylor fight he will outbox Abraham and as long as his stamina holds up will get a points decision.
Warde VS Kessler I think Kessler will get the knockout again in the later rounds.
Bah… I bet you this will be the outcome:
Direll split decision over Froch
- Direll’s speed is just superb.. I’m afrait Froch wont be able to catch up.
Abraham 10th round KO over Taylor
- Abraham’s pressure will simply be too much for Taylor who’ll get fatigued in later rounds.
Kessler 7th round KO over Ward
- Ward is great, no doubt. But his inexperience and quality in fighters will be his doom when he fights Kessler whose punches is hard and fast.
wow Sean McDaniel are you an american because you wouldnt no it from this artical
this is how i see it happening
froch ko round 8 or 6
taylor split
kessler ko round 7
