Fury defeats McDermott: The day British Boxing died…

fury4532445By Gavin Bridges: Tonight, quite happy with myself for having two days extreme over-exertion in the house of a real freind, Mr. Glen Binns I so thank you, I returned home to settle myself down for the English Heayweight Title bout between the much-vaunted Tyson Fury, and John McMuffin, sorry, McDermott.

See, even the most evenly biased of us get caught up in the PR machine that accompanies most bouts. So, regular refreshments to hand, I tune in to see the ‘Mini-Klitschko’ turn up to do a number on his opponent. So what went wrong?

From the first bell, MsDermott negated the reach and pace advantage of Fury, scant regard for the blows ‘Tyson’ threw (and I continue to struggle to use his name in pugil circles with worthy justification)

At no stage in the fight did Fury seem to be the genuine aggressor of sorts, a lack of fight experience and stamina evolving as an Achilles heel, always being repelled and out-done by the abrasive, neanderthal, yet effective style of his opponent. At enough stages of the fight did the younger, taller traveler of the two seem to lose ‘comput mentus’ and fade physically, as the ragged workman carried onwards aplomb.

Then the twelfth. Arm punches thrown from Fury, solid blows from McDermott, who as the round wore on became further and further the aggressor, failing Fury’s corner insistence that they needed a KO, and after further assault the bell rang…

The fighters met..

And Fury’s arm was raised.

Always I believed ‘preferred’ winners were the bastion of the way more money-oriented markets of the ex-colonials, ’til now. The BBBC, once the flag-bearer of morals within the sport, condone PPV morals. I hope they are proud. I hope, I really hope, they are ashamed. WBBBC anybody?

It wasn’t quite as bad as people are making out. Watch the fight again, minus the commentary…Fury was the aggressor throughout and deserved the win in my opinion. The scorecard was a shambles, it wasn’t a big a margin as the ref scored.

Also, the death of British boxing? The Diaz-Mallinaggi fight was a bigger rob than this fight and the texas judge in that fight is known throughout boxing as being bent, most fighters won’t fight with him as a judge. You get this all over the world.

  • Rob says:

    Result was a disgrace.
McDermott threw the heavier punches throughout, and the stats showed he actually landed more punches. How the hell can he lose.

O’Connor should never be allowed to judge a fight again.

I was at the fight and think the decision was a joke….i know people have a bias opinion when the back a fighter but surely we can’t all be wrong!!! There has to be a re-match and one with a panel of judges not a ref that clearly needs a white stick and a labrador…..

  • Geof says:

Im a Tyson fan, I think he has a bright future but I thought since arranged, this fight was 3 or 4 fights too early for him….and it showed. I think his cardio needs a hell of a lot of work but we have to still remember, he is 21 years old. He will still go a long way, he was very lucky last night. very very lucky but it was the ref who raised his arm.!! People should not get on his back about that!!!

  • deano 71 says:

fury looked awfull big john slightly better and never mind the robbery if fury doesn’t change his trainer,to someone who can teach him to use his advantages properly then he’s gonna end up getting his arse kicked.big john aint the quickest but it was alarming how easily he thumped home his jab and right cross.and fury’s after fight boast that he thought he won convincingly beggars belief.it was entertaining but if fury’s dad does have his best interests at heart he needs to send him over the pond and let emmanuel steward or freddie roach take a look coz fury has the heart and chin but that will only get him so far!!!!

  • jase t(england) says:

boxings popularity is waning enough.we do not need these ridiculous decisions.the ref should be ashamed of himself, robbing ####.bad luck john

  • michael jackson says:

fury looked bloody awful in this fight, he seemed to have no coordination

  • Chris Pole says:

I can only think that the ref knocked points off McDermott for the attempted headbutt and for turning his back when he was under pressure in the last couple. However, even with those point deductions it was at worst a draw for McDermott.

  • Mike says:

98-92 seriously thats ridiculous. Maybe tyson could have won by a round at the very most. Mcdermott has been screwed over twice now, i feel very sorry for him. I think fury either had an offnight, his inexperience didn’t allow him to get off or mcdermott was just too much of a tricky customer. The positives to take from this are fury showed great heart determination and a great chin. Well done to him for taking this fight but maybe he could give mcdermott some more respect.

  • Macca says:

now first off it isnt tysons fault that he won the contriversal decision, its the referees. just watched the fight and it was disgraceful. i had mcdermot winning by a round

  • Liam says:

I agree with novesen to a point about the referee. They should never be the sole judge, theres been many cases of fighters being robbed by this form of judging, paul Smith-Steven Bendall being one. Personally, I thought the decision was shocking and the result should be altered. However, this will never happen and im disgusted that fury had the audacity to try and claim that as a fair victory. He should know better.

  • novesen says:

I cant blame Fury. He fought the fight way too early in his career. I mean, anyone can see that he’s still waaaaaaaay too green to fight a fight as experienced as McDermott..

I blame english boxing. They should NOT allow the referee be the judge.. and especially not the sole judge.

I look forward to the rematch. I hope that Fury may have learned to be a little humble from this experience and expect the next fight to be as interesting as this was.

  • Jack P says:

There will be no investigation, no apologies and despite claims on the contrary I doubt there will be a rematch.

The only good I took from last night was how well Fury looked in only his eighth fight against a seasoned pro, it just showed me how much potential the guy really has.

Feel sorry for McDermott because we all know he won the fight, but I hope Fury doesnt recieve a negative public reaction for this, its not his fault hes seen as a future cash cow.

  • A Smith says:

Disgrace of a decision. I wish there was some way for us to register our disgust – sky should put pressure on the authorities to investigate and ensure this doesn’t happen again. I won’t be watching Fury fight again, out of protest – unless it is a rematch. Even if it is, McDermott would probably be robbed again.

Good article. I’ve been a Tyson Fury fan for a while now – seen just about all of his fights. I Will continue to watch his fights, but maybe not so much as a fan of his but a fan of boxing.

Now – the decision to raise Fury’s hand at the end of this bout was a disgrace. Absolute disgrace. It’s not his fault the referee gave him the decision, but at least he could have been honest and said he was surprised or something, instead of shooting his mouth off about how he was the better man on the day, and he’ll fight him again any time.

John McDermott must have been enraged by the way this young buck was shooting his mouth off, after losing a fight that he clearly won…
