Biting The Hand That Feeds
By Edgar Perez: In the last two weeks we have heard the rhetoric between the boxing world and MMA world ratchet to a new level, or shall one say, dip to new lows. The petty arguments about the merits of each sport are not usually much of a concern for the average fan because the average fan only cares about seeing good fights. It is a simple relationship in a market economy, people will pay for what they want to see, and most PPV events usually revolve around some kind of violence in a combat sport.
Whether or not some may want to admit it, there is definitive cross-over potential, even though the sports themselves share very little in common. Why a promoter like Bob Arum or a top athlete in a sport like Floyd Mayweather Jr. would attack a fan base of another sport with potential cross-over, is beyond comprehension. It is so stupid to think that by attempting to tear down the reputation of one sport you can elevate another one, that anyone engaging in such acts should really get their heads examined.
Long before these statements, boxing had an uneasy relationship with the fans. From bad decisions to boring fights to ripping off loyal fans with closed circuit or PPV fights, fans have been getting sick of boxing’s act. As if what Arum and Mayweather have done so far to contribute to that mess wasn’t enough, now they turn their venom towards the fans.
The fans have rejected their garbage so Arum and Mayweather lash out at them instead of looking inward and trying to understand what the fans are looking for. If they need an example, all they have to do (in Arum’s case) is look in their own stable.
Pacquiao and Cotto represent what any fight fans want to see, courageous warriors who will put it all on the line. Find more guys like them and have them fight each other. The Pacquiao vs Cotto fight has given the fans something that was stolen every time they were promised fight of the year, or fight of the century and bought into it.
This isn’t a fight where one boxer has engendered such a hatred that people would pay to watch him lose. This is a fight with two guys that have paid their dues and now get to reap the benefits of their hard work. This fight will be a barn-burner while it lasts. The real test for boxing comes after November 14th. Will boxing continue to produce fights that the fans have been asking for or will they be put in a holding pattern once again?

jstraightright if you think for one moment that MMA is street fighting or junk you need to take another look. It’s one of the most gruelling, disciplined and IMO entertaining sports on the planet. I’m a fan of both boxing and MMA and I hate seeing fans of either sport make ignorant comments like that.
Edgar Perez this is without a doubt the best article i’ve read on this website and I hope you continue to write pieces of this quality. You’ve also hit the nail on the head with Dana White, he’s a complete mouth piece. I can’t stand the man, I don’t like the way he holds himself at all. However I very much respect what he’s done with the UFC and think he’s doing a fantastic job.
That’s not to say that Dana White is innocent of stoking the fire as well. I’m sure both men love the free press they are getting. I’m just saying that as fans, we should just keep doing what we are doing, talking with our dollars, and buying only good fights. They have to earn our money not the other way around.
Thanks guys. Most of you understood what I was getting at. This animosity is something that is being stoked by Mayweather. Some writers are trying to blame the UFC for the conflict in scheduling but conveniently forget to remind us that up until the July 18 Mayweather-Marquez postponement, the UFC was the only promotion working towards the September 19th date. Here’s an example:
Mayweather placed his rescheduled fight on Sept. 19, knowing UFC already tentatively planned an event that same night, because a major bout involving a Mexican fighter commonly is conducted in conjunction with Mexican Independence Day.

Floyd Mayweather Jr “FTP”! F*** That Puto!!!
hit more than you get hit is winning period…this isn’t street fighting or the junk at the ufc, complete garbage… mosley williams or clottey don’t deserve money’s payday pwill may in the future at jmw but no cause Pav will knock him out
Very well written article and I couldn’t agree more.
Oscar De La Hoya and Mrs. Hatton need to stop giving Mayweather free money for dancing around the ring so he is forced to find a real fight. Boxing real competition. Now we have Mayweather asking Uncle Marquez for a loan. Stop looking for easy money. Fight Mosley, Williams, Clottey… Being a good boxer does not equate to running around the ring. And no matter how many times he says it in an attempt to convince the rest of us, he is not the best fighter in the world.
