Why does Pacquiao Care So Much About Winning a 7th title?

pacquiao534By Manuel Perez: I find it amusing to see what lengths that Manny Pacquiao would go to get a chance to win his 7th world title world title. He really wants Miguel Cotto’s WBO title to be on the line, yet he doesn’t want it bad enough that he’d be willing to fight Cotto at the normal 147 pound weight limit for the Welterweight bout. Instead, Pacquiao wants the title on the line at a lighter weight of 145.The World Boxing Organization seem to be bending over backwards to accommodate Pacquiao’s wishes, making it known that the WBO title will be on the line despite it being a catch weight.

I personally don’t see the value in going after a 7th world title if the fight is taking place at a catch weight.

Why should they? With all these crazy weight classes that have sprung up in boxing, as well all the different sanctioning bodies – WBO, IBO, IBF, WBA, WBC, WBO – that almost any fighter with any amount of talent will likely win a number of them without having accomplished much.

I can’t figure it out. When I see all the people that Pacquiao has beaten to win most of his other titles, only one of them – Juan Manuel Marquez – was what I consider to be a good fighter, and that fight was a gift decision where Pacquiao got beaten up.

I don’t knock if the boxing public could care less about Pacquiao winning a 7th title. What is he going to do when he eventually wins his 7th title, where it on his shelve or something? To me it’s enough that he’s fighting a good opponent for a change instead of a washed up one or an overrated fighter.

Goodness knows, it’s been ages since Pacquiao fought someone that I feel is worth mentioning.

I wonder why Pacquiao didn’t take that fight? That’s why I can’t respect Pacquiao for the way that he goes after these worthless titles. Instead of going after a fighter that would have meant more, Pacquiao takes the easier path so that he can have a better chance of collecting another belt.

I wouldn’t even be collecting the titles if I was Pacquiao, because I don’t see any of the titles that he’s earned as having any meaning because of the fighters he’s beaten to win the fights. This thing Pacquiao has about collecting things. I just don’t understand it. When there’s no real value to it, why does he even want to waste his time with it?

I totally agree with Manuel Perez that Pacquiao made a mistake in choosing Cotto as his next opponent (catch weight or “no catch weight” doesn’t matter). Boxing fans will only say that Cotto’s not the same fighter anymore if Manny wins. The same excuse when Manny won against De La Hoya. But I think Mosley’s isn’t the best option either. Mosley’s age will be the excuse if Manny wins. So, I think the best fighter for Manny to face in the ring to convince everybody (especially Manuel Perez) that he is really who he is (without any doubt in his skill in boxing)… is to face Vitali Klitschko… then Nikolay Valuev a week later… then Wladimir Klitschko after another week…

By the way GPM, be a nice guy… this is our friend Manuel Perez only source of income… if we don’t post then that’s not a good thing to him… he may be fired or something… if that happens then it will be our loss… he may be force to go into boxing and beat Manny Pacquiao out of his senses… to prove that Manny is not really that good…

cotto is about to receive the worst beating of his life from the pacman.

this time the beatdown needs no cement.

  • MBA says:

As early as now, you are already giving execuses to a possible Cotto loss..it’s his term to fight Manny at 145 instead of 143…Manny give in to that demand..money split, venue…that has nothing to do when they fight…gloves? won’t they be using the same?

Perez, get a new line of work. This is the most biased article I had ever read.

  • Anonymous says:

ill give you credit, you just want people to read your articles and respond, if being positive doesn’t work, then do what you did, its like ratings, do you what you have to do to get ratings , keep it up

floyd doesn’t deserve a 50/50 split with pacman.

floyd should be thankful with a 30% share…..

Pacquiao in the headlines again. Good job in promoting this fight. Win win for Pacquiao and Cotto. No interest in the Marquez Mayweather fight. I’m hoping the Pacquiao/ Cotto out sells the Marquez/ Mayweather so that Mayweather has no foundation not to accept a 50/50 fight with Pacquaio in 2010. Cotto should fight Margarito and Marquez should fight Bradley in 2010. Long live boxing.

a biased article reflects the work of an immature workmanship. I trust though, brother MP (read Manuel Perez, not Manny Pacquiao), that you will improve in no time. Then both camps of Pacquiao and Marquez (your camp) will surely love to read your work. Tschüss!

  • RMC says:

These restrictions placed on Cotto, only go to show Manny cannot cut it at WW without concessions. IMO it’s a little unfair, but it’s happening, he’s got what he wants, end of.

Lets just got this fight on! Even weighing in at 145lbs Cotto will be much bigger on the night of the fight and IMO Pac has bit off more than he can chew.

  • Mr Rich says:

I dont agree with the way Paquiao has acted in the build up to this fight. He has got the gloves he wants, the money percentage he wants. He now is getting a shot at the title which was not negotiated for before an agreement was made and then broken. But i respect him as a fighter inside the ring and think he has collected some good scalps in his career, beating a few legends along the way. I do feel JMM did beat him in both fights though.

  • Anonymous says:

… I completely agree with Perez, pacquiao demanding that the title is on the line. Instead of agreeing with cotto over the arrangement he makes cotto sign the fight THEN goes running to the WBO. Thats disguisting.

  • Mike says:

Without the belt…What would Cotto put on the line for the biggest payday of his career?

  • mike says:

Manuel Perez get a real job this is not a place for myspace blog type of writing. Just because you hate a person does not make it news.

  • MANueLa_pachater says:

Forget about Manuela’s article above. He is full of biases against Manny.

The truth is Manny is a small guy, a featherweight challenger (130lb) a year ago. He hardly made the jr. welter as he officially weight 138lb only. Cotto on the other hand, is a real welter champ having fought 146 or 147lb during weigh in and bulk up to 150lb during the fight night. Disparity is clear. Cotto is also known mauler having beaten his opponents badly. Cotto is younger and stronger than Pacquiao.

If the two fights even at 145lb cathweight, Cotto has many advantanges being a bigger man. I see a very tough fight for Pac and I’m not sure how can he pull off this fight. As Roger Mayweather is saying, Pac has serious balls fighting a bigger, stronger and younger man.

WBO has officially stated that the fight should be a title bout. That’s according to the rules. No one can dispute it even if Cotto likes it or not. The title is minor but for Pac and his fans, it gives the fight more interesting. So, why Perez is ranting this all about if he think nobody cares it?

  • Joe says:

Manuel Perez! (Pacquiao, w/ steel toe shoes) 138#s VS 145#s (Cotto, naked). Check who has balls. Only Pacman fights bigger fighters.

Without Pacman you have nothing to write/ no “boxing news” in boxing right now. Be thankful ‘coz you have topic in boxing.

All the rest in boxing, fans prefer UFC!

  • ej says:

manuela, a lot of people care what pacquiao does or accomplices.. deal with it. and a lot of people do think you’re the one who is stupid! is it so hard to understand that the welterweight starts at 141lbs. and the maximum is 147lbs. so 145lbs is still a welterweight but i guess it confuses you and it doesn’t surprise me. by the way, manuela it was marquez who was given a gift oon their first fight. one of the judges made a mistake that was why it was a draw. and the record stands that marquez lost in the second fight. you want to cry? go ahead, let it out, hahahahah!!!! go ahead write more articles cause it doesn’t really matter since pacquiao’s record stands and it eclipse that of marquez, bwahahahaha!!!

  • Juan dela Cruz says:

Who wouldn’t want just to have the opportunity to win a 7th title in as many divisions. Even your boyfriend JMM would want it if he had a chance. You just can’t take it that the first boxer that might pull this off will not be a mexican or puerto rican not even an african american but a lowly filipino who 6 years ago no one would even imagine that he will fighting as a main attraction in a Las Vegas PPV bout, not even in a long shot.

I guess some people just can’t accept reality.
