Cotto’s WBO title Will Be On the Line Against Pacquiao

By Manuel Perez: Well, it looks as if WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto will be forced now to have his World Boxing Organization title on the line regardless of whether he likes it or not against Manny Pacquiao. All I can say is It figures. The WBO is forcing Cotto’s hand by saying that Cotto has to put the title on the line if the fight is go take place between the weights of 141-147. Since Cotto agreed to fight Pacquiao at a 145 pound catch weight, Cotto will be prevented from coming in at the full 147 pounds for the bout.

This gives the advantage to Pacquiao, because he’ll have a weaker Cotto to deal with on November 14th, while at the same time still have the chance to fight for Cotto’s WBO belt, even though it neutralized welterweight clash. In effect, it’s like a welterweight match with training wheels for Pacquiao. He’ll still get credit if he wins, and only the boxing fans that dig deeper will realize that Cotto was prevented from coming in at the full 147 pounds for the weight class.

pacquiao56343If Cotto fails to agree to put his WBO title on the line, he’ll be stripped by the WBO, and the title will be on the line anyway because the WBO recently made Pacquiao the number #1 mandatory for Cotto’s title a couple of weeks ago.

That was a real swift move by the WBO. They saw that Cotto was unwilling to put the title on the line because this was at a catch watch and they then decide to make Pacquiao the number #1 challenger so that Cotto would have no other choice but to put the title on the line.

If he doesn’t, and vacates or is stripped, Pacquiao will get to fight for the vacant title against Cotto or whoever steps in and take the fight. That’s really big of WBO to do this. They must really like Pacquiao a lot to push him above the other contenders in the WBO to force Cotto’s hand. That puts Cotto in a situation where he has little choice but to put the title on the line.

It’s either that, or he decides not to take the fight. Cotto’s not about to shoot himself in the foot, so he’ll probably take the fight so that he can get a huge payday, but this really ridiculous what the WBO is going to him. All this just so that Pacquiao can get a chance to win a 7th world title in seven different weight classes.

Never mind that many of the wins have come against fighters that probably shouldn’t have held titles in the first place or that Pacquiao was given one of the hugest gift decisions I’ve ever seen in my life with his 12 round decision win over Juan Manuel Marquez last year in March 2008.

The important thing is Pacquiao will be given the chance at a 7th world title, along with the catch weight.

  • THE PROFESSOR says:

Cotto should chuck the WBO title and fight Manny at the catch weight 145 win or loss and then fight the next guy in line for the Vacante Title.
that’s the smart thing to do. Cotto is a real Champ but Clottey should of been fighting Manny for the Title. Cotto vacante the title and Manny has to fight the #1 mandortary challenge in the welterweight divison. Clottey vs. Pacquiao for the WBO Title. Freddie would want to take that big risk. Clottey will wipe the floor with Manny.

  • MBA says:

Why would he weigh that much come fight night if that will him slow him down..153 or 152 is good enough…he will still outweigh Manny by at least 6 lbs..i just don’t see how Cotto is at disadvantage here?

Or let him find 5 or 6 other opponents to earn what he will earning in this fight…He knew he can make it at 145 ( 143 was what Manny’s camp was asking )without losing his strength with or without the title or he would have
opted out..it will be an interesting and great fight and may the best man wins..

  • robin says:

Pacquiao agree to fight cotto on full welterweight at 147lbs… the weigh in must be 3 hours before the fight night… US$1M penalty for every pound over.. how about that Mr. Perez?

  • bugzlife says:

jealous mexicano ramon. why don’t you shut your mouth up and accept your defeat.

  • ramon says:

so if pacauio wins the wbo title, is he going to defend it? and if he does, will he defend it at a catch weight everytime? what a guy. like i said, this guy is cheating his way to the hall of fame….

  • Hanoncs says:

I bet nobody that posted on here is a fighter themselves, 2 pounds is nothing as long as you know months before the fight. Go jog for 20 minutes and see how much weight you lose, Its easy, with time before the fight.

  • scouser says:

AA marquez got up after them 3 knock downs in the 1st fight and schooled pacquiao for at least 9 rounds of that fighthow he was never given the decision i will never know.

in their 2nd fight it was closer but i still think JMM deserved to take the decision.

Cotto v Pac will be a close 1 to call but i think Miguel will just have enough to hold off the Pacman and win with a late stoppage

  • NAA says:

Guaranteed when Pac beats Cotto (by rnd 5) all these Pac haters will be screaming about Cotto being over the hill, severley weight draned (1lb is nothing), shot fighter.

Just wait for it no praise for the Pacman just sorrow for the destroyed Cotto!!

    Same old typical BS!!!

  • v_observer says:

Just a point here about weight, why don’t they just agree to 147, FYI right now Pacman weighs at 152(probably eating too much and the movie shoots).

and BOXING FAN, yes Pacman’s English suck, but how many languages do you speak, in the Philippines you have to speak at least two local languages, and there is English, that makes three.

The question is not about being dehydrated its if Cotto can catch Pacman, and if he does will it be a repeat of what he did to Zab? Like hitting the balls.

  • TboneNYC says:

Looks like the deal has been sealed!!!…

Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik vs Paul “The Punisher” Williams will be getting it on Oct 3 for Pavlik’s WBC/WBO middle weight title at the boardwalk hall in atlantic city.

The fight will be on HBO, but i’m not sure if it will be a PPV or not.

    Gonna be a good one!

  • hey says:

pacquiao is scared to face mosley, mayweather, paul milliams, margerito, berto, valero,

  • Ronald says:

Always Excuses…why does some people can’t give the credit of an asian guy? Such racist people. The world is not all about America -.-

Oh..and btw, we didn’t start the flamewar.

  • MBA says:

Cotto can always back out from that fight if he feels he can’t be effective at 145 contrary to his nutritionist opinion that he can go down to 145lbs without losing his strength…and just maybe, cotto should hire perez and replace his nutritionist…Catchweight are for great fighters of different divisions for it to happen…Cotto included…they are all great fighters…let’s let them fight.

  • Caguas says:

I hear Manny is going to fight the winner of the Paul Williams vs Kelly Pavlik at a catchweight of 149 LOL. If Pac really wants to make history fight the champ at 147. The weight of 145 should not be a problem for Cotto considering he weighed 146 for Clottey. Catchweight Manny strikes again.

  • ph says:

yall talking that this is fair then let me say this if pacquaio is a real champ then tell the man to fight cotto at 147 for the belt if he is really that good yah admit hes a good fighter but he hasnt still really proved himself in the welterweight division he beats de la hoya at a draining wait that he hadnt fought in 17 years and then hatton who has the worst defense that ive ever seen in my life he deserved to get knock out

  • KNITEHEAT says:

STOP USING PACQUIAO’S NAME FOR YOUR OWN INTEREST…JUST GRAB THE F@CKING LEAF BLOWER AND CLEAN UP MY FRONT YARD.

  • KNITEHEAT says:

The truth is…if this guy Perez stopped using Pacquiao’s name, no one would read his articles. This guy is f2cking user. Your Marquez guy has defeated twice…so get over it. You sounded like him already.

  • Manuel Perez Jr says:

Cotto feels losing, as a security of losing he wants to keep his title…….

  • AA says:

Marquez knocked down 3 times in 1st match and twice in the 2nd match. tell me then who is better fighter.

  • PACMAN GOING DOWN says:

PACMAN IS GOING TO LOOSE!!!! Manny has never been punched by a someone with the power and skill of Cotto. LOL….ha ha ha ha.

  • Anonymous says:

Going in to the fight Cotto knows what he will have to do seenin how the fight is fixed. Cotto is goin to kick his a_s. Watch, in round 10 Cotto will get the tko. See, Cotto is the best fighter goin into this. Manny Pac is a good fighter but if you can’t see what he is doing then there is something wrong. There is a reason for the 145 pound catch weight, it gives Manny a better chance to WIN. It does not matter if it is 1 pound or 2. Like I said you don’t see that cuz all you Manny Pac fans have your heads so far up Pac’s a_s.

  • boxing fan#2 says:

If it is for the belt, it has to be at 147.
Look´s like they are pleasing to much manny pac.
If he looses (pac), pac will have to go down in weight, because he is not a natural 147.
Anyway it will be a great fight.

  • JD says:

Cotto should dump the belt, take a tune-up fight sometime in the next few months and then fight Margarito in June (before the PR Day parade). The money he gets for that fight will make the Pac fight money look like loose change.

  • 123 says:

cotto knocks out pac in the 10th due to a left hook to his liver

  • Fred says:

“Pacquiao loses twice to Marquez.” I think you actually have to be hired as a judge for your opinion to count regrading who wins or loses. Regardless of the author’s emotionally motivated biased opinion, at least, this article laid out some Cotto’s excuses before the fight.

  • Boxing Fan says:

How could I have overlooked that? Thanks Froifroi!

  • Boxing Fan says:

    Pacquiao is overrated because he:
    - fought an over the hill De La Hoya
    - beat a slow as hell Diaz
    - beat an overrated Hatton
    - cherry-picks his opponents

Marquez was robbed because he beat the snot out of the little filipino twice.

I have no respect for the guy.

(optional) His lack of english skills hurts my ears.

Did you see what I just did??? I wrote every article that Manuel Perez EVER wrote…

  • FP says:

Hey Cotto. You heard the expression “You can’t have your cake and eat it too!” LOL! You want the big pay day, then there is a price. What a moron!

Cotto jumped to the top of the latter in the Manny Sweepstakes and he think he is calling the shots!? Give me a break.

This was a foregone conclusion when word came out the title is not on the line.

  • Rookie says:

WOW!!!!!!SO if Pac wins that means that every welterweight that wants to fight for the title needs to go down to 145 or may be more to fight Pac. (again if he wins). Thats is Bull S___. Anyway I still believe that Cotto is going to beat Pac with all his demands and when he do that Cotto should vacate the title so WBO wont get anything from his next fights.
