Viloria defeats Iribe, Banal decisions Beranza – Boxing Results

By Manuel Perez: International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Brian Viloria (26-2, 15 KO’s) defeated challenger Jesus Iribe (15-6-5, 9 KO’s) by a 12-round unanimous decision tonight at the Blaisdell Center, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Viloria, 28, making his first defense of his IBF title, outclassed his bottom 15 ranked opponent.

This was a non-mandatory defense for Viloria, who opted to take on a lesser threat than a more dangerous opponent. Maybe it was a wise thing that Viloria did that because he at least held onto his title though this fight. Let’s hope that Viloria takes on a better fighter next time, preferably in the top five.

Bantamweight contender AJ Banal (19-1-1, 16 KO’s) defeated journeyman Jose Angel Beranza (32-15-2, 25 KO’s) by a 10-round unanimous decision. Banal, 20, ranked #5 IBF, #6 WBA and #9 WBO, added his third consecutive win since being stopped in the 10th round last year by Rafael Concepcion in July 2008.

Banal got the win tonight, but it looks like he still his training wheels on after being destroyed by Concepcion last year. I hope Banal’s management don’t continue to match him so softly, because Banal will be in shock when they put him in with another live body and I can see him getting knocked out again when that time comes. His chin is questionable.
