The WBC Creates a New Diamond Belt, is Pacquiao Interested In It?

By Manuel Perez: Just when I thought boxing couldn’t get any lower than it is, I get this news today about the World Boxing Council creating a new belt called the ‘WBC Diamond Championship” belt, one designed specifically for elite fighters in catch weight bouts. The timing of the creation of the belt appears comes right at the time when World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao are mired in a tug of war about whether their November 14th bout should be for the title or not.
Well, it looks like the WBC in all their wisdom have come up with the answer to this problem by creating a brand new belt just for this type of occasion.
This is hilarious. The belt would be pretty much a meaningless token, pretty much similar to earning a bachelors degree online.
I suppose the Diamond belt will have a sanctioning fee that goes a long with it. What that means is unclear, because the last I heard, Bob Arum was supposed to pay the $150,000 sanctioning fee for Cotto. Supposedly the sanctioning fee would be less for this belt.
I can’t believe Pacquiao would be interested in a belt like this? The Diamond belt, which is encrusted with 598 diamonds (real ones?) and 18 K gold, Emeralds and rubies, is belt I would never want to fight for. In a 100 years from now when there’s some history behind it, I still wouldn’t want to fight for a belt like this.
This is some kind of weird made up stuff that I can’t see any value in. If it was given to me for a victory, I’d decline it and tell them to keep it. They’d have to pay me to take the thing because I’d push the thing away from me if they started trying to get me to take it.
Cotto already has the WBO belt, which I find very little value in either, and he doesn’t need to be fighting for his made up belt.

Creating this new belt just proves that Miguel Cotto is right and he doesn’t have to put his title on the line if he does not choose to. I think this tug of war from the pac team is completely worthless and at the end of the day this fight was created because of the revenue it will provide. So if Pac wants the real belt to create a real great legacy he should fight cotto in 147 and leave no doubts in the world of boxing.
i’m no pacquiao fan by any means but for goodness sake, shut the hell up, we know you don’t like pacquiao so stop making pointless articles slamming him

Comments responds well to a good balanced article. But with Perez’ article full of biases and emotional ranting against a guy, it’s too obvious he will get a negative response.

Whaddya expect? How else can WBC sell the sissy fraud they call P4P King to the public? More and more people are getting tired of Team Pacquiao’s antics. Not everybody are morons like the Pacnuthuggers. Of course they need to make up a fake title. Just give it to Pacquiao, it fits him: worthless title for the wothless champion.

I think this is an idea that could work, although the WBC needs to work something out, they’d need to have an unlimited amount of these belts, one for every single pound of weight, unless they wanna make it where someone wins it every year, for example, one year at 145 and say the next year at 109.
Pac wins two fights and they try to create belts for him to make him happy, wow, this is a damn joke.
If the diamond belt becomes a reality, and if Cotto wins or lose on Nov 14th, Cotto has a shot to be awarded the diamond belt and P4P mythical title without risking his WBO welter weight title belt? It’s a win win situation for Cotto even if he loses.
Mayweather and Marquez should be fighting for the catch weight diamomd belt title.

Suggest you read Trevor Weis article. Catchweights are here to stay to even the playing field. The great Sugar Ray, former superstar ODLH and many other boxers used this. So stop whining about. End of discussion.

After a while it’s funny. Manuela is sick of Pacquiao because he wishes he was as popular/great/loved. And because he will never be any of the above, all he can do is try to get some attention by being a hateful jealous writer towards Pac who has done nothing but his best in the ring. Manuela has lost all his objectivity when he writes about Pac.
