Is Bernard Hopkins a legend or is it an American thing?

hop45235637By Steven Wain: The title says it all is Hopkins (49-5-1-32 KO’s) a real legend? The answer is NO! Hopkins is another failed boxer that has come out the US in the last few decades. The only reason Hopkins has been given the term “legend” is because he’s American. Let’s get to some facts.

Americans tell foreign boxers to get off their ass and remove themselves from there comfort zone of their own country yet the so called legend Hopkins has only ever twice fought outside the states, one was a poor draw and one was a lucky 10 round points victory.

Hopkins has fought no one of much interest, the fighters with some record he has fought he gets destroyed; he twice lost to a very poor boxer in Jermain Taylor. The only real decent fighter on his record is the great Joe Calzaghe (46-0-32 KO’s) however once again the “legend” got destroyed, Hopkins was just like a punching bag for Calzaghe who gave him a boxing lesson.

Hopkins fighting style is boring and slow, I would rather watch pain dry then any of Hopkins fights! If he can’t get his own way he starts to cheat like he did against calzaghe, maybe he should be called the “legend of cheating” typical American don’t you think?

Just like all the so called “legends” before him Hopkins has an excellent mouth on him, but when it comes to the ring he’s as useless as an empty jar.

Hopkins should stick to watching boxing on TV, the old guy never had it, and never will have it so he should just retire now before he gets another beating like the one he received from calzaghe.

Hopkins a legend I think not!

yes it is an american thing.
because all americans no nothing about boxing only australians do

  • THE GOLDEN FAN says:

….. hes never been beat convincingly.

  • THE GOLDEN FAN says:

Hopkins is defensive MASTER. I’ve never seen him hurt in a fight before and this is why he’s still a force at his age. He might not be a popular fighter and underrated his whole career but now the world knows how great he is. I personally never seen his fight with Roy but all the fights i have seen

  • Canook says:

Paul Clare, the writer is English, he’s a knob like you
    Canada.

  • p4p Khan says:

Im british and even i think hes a a legend, he beat some great name and lost some desions that cus gone his way

  • Tim says:

Truly stupid. Nothing more to say about anyone moronic enough to write such idiotic rubish. By the way it is Joe Calzaghe who is having his legend status questioned not Hopkins.

  • british boxing fan says:

ive seen so many articles on this site from scott gilfoid slating british boxers, its nice to read one about an american boxer for a change !
its a load of rubish and he has know idea about boxing !
    but nice to see anyway

  • ksljlj says:

lol steven wain’s the joke here

  • kinge says:

What you know about boxing could be written on the back of a stamp!

  • Liam says:

I’m british and cant believe the rubbish that is in this article about hopkins’ legendary status coming about due to being American. Calzaghe is not the only quality fighter he has fought (jones, trinidad, tarver, pavlik etc)and there was no way he got destroyed by him. This is a joke especially as at the age of 44 hopkins would comfortably beat any fighter from middleweight to cruiserweight.

  • badman says:

    steven, ur an idiot

  • G man says:

i agree with you, he is boring and a cheat, and over hyped by americans.

  • Swifty says:

For what it’s worth Hopkins would hand fighter currently fighting at SM or LH another defeat. He beat Kessler, school Froch with his awful defence and also beat Dawson.

He may be 44 but he controls the pace of the fight through movement. so it’s irrelvant. One of his best and most energetic performances came in his last fight Pavlik – so I don’t how anybody can disreguard Calzaghe’s win over Hopkins – it was a fantastic win on American soil against a legend – full stop.

  • Swifty says:

Paul Clare – Bernard Hopkins is my favourite all time fighter and is without a shadow of a doubt a legend!

Oh, and by the way I’m Welsh.

I thought he lost a very close decision to Calzaghe but it could of gone either way.

What a ridiculous statement – it’s like saying all people that don’t like Calzaghe don’t like him because they are English and jealous of his success.

This is obviously not true, I was in Vegas and met many English Calzaghe fans – but it is as ridiculous as saying anyone who supports Calzaghe or has extreme views for him or against a fighter he’s fought – is Welsh.

    Get a life, son!

  • Carrick says:

That is by far the best article i have ever read ever. Very entertaining. looking at people go WHAT YOU TALKING ABOUT? HOPKINS IS A LEGEND YOU IDIOT! is great, which is the only reason you wrote this article.

Apart from beating Trinidad when he was undefeated, first man to knock out Oscar De La Hoya, Winky Wright, Antonio Tarver and some other fighters im missing here, yeah he is definitely not a legend.

  • Ho says:

Do they use the term Douchebag in Britain?

  • Anonymous says:

do u know what darren hinch would say about this article!! SHAME SHAME SHAME

  • Irish says:

A clear swipe at Hopkins by a pathetic human

  • hmmm says:

so true if american want to make you famues they will if american want to make you to a hero they will but if your not american and you have done to much to be call a hero they wont call you a hero cuz your not american so true

  • Joe says:

If your joking its not funny it just makes you sound like a pig-ignorant retard with no knowledge of boxing. If your serious then you really are pig-ignorant retard with no knowledge of boxing. If you want to learn more about boxing I suggest you watch these fights, Hopkins vs Trinidad, Hopkins vs De la Hoya, Hopkins vs Wright and Hopkins vs Pavlik. You are an embaressment to boxing if you think Hopkins isnt a legend coming from an Englishman.

  • Jason Mate says:

WOW! The title said it all. I didn’t have to read this to know this writer is ignorant. However, I skimmed this article and couldn’t have laughed more. This is a joke. B-hop is a LEGEND and we should all be thankful we got to seem him perform. Enough said!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Alex Bloomer says:

This is quite possibly the poorest article I’ve ever read. If any name on his record, De La Hoya should stick out like a sore thumb! The reason Hopkins has fought in America all his career is because America is the Mecca of Boxing. Anyone who’s anyone fights in America.

  • aff says:

this websites got some derangd people writing for them.hopkins is a true legend ,a true warrior who defended his world middleweight belt over 20 times,at the age of 44 just scooled a so called p4p fighter in pavlik, the simple facts are -hopkins is a h.o.famer-atrue all time great-one of the greatest middleweights of all time ,up ther with the likes of lakkatta, armstrong, ray robinson ,hagler, hearns, duran.not given the respect he deserves ala-larry holmes

  • Anthony says:

Hopkins is a Legend. Jones Jr is a Legend. Calzaghe is a Legend.
Its not an American thing, your just really biased against Americans. (I’m from England by the way.)
This site employs the most biased writers whose articles contain very little boxing knowledge. (although not all writers on this site are/or try to be biased.)
Lets just leave it at that.

  • Anthony says:

I do not like Hopkins at all, but he is a legend! he is a great fighter and still his.

Everyone fight he won he should of won and everyone he lost he should of lost. But he is a legend and one of the best middleweights of all time

  • Anonymous says:

hopkins is a very good fighter, but there is no way in hell hes a legend maybe a modern day great but legend as in fight the likes of robinson, lamotta or a hagler somehow i dont thinks so, if anyone here can tell me a legitimate great he has beaten then im willing to listen, and no we dont want to hear tito or oscar two guys who started of at welter an the other a super feather thats 126pnds going up to fight a 160 pounder no wonder hopkins beat both and even at that he struggled for at least 4rds against oscar, now those two and his win over a very overrated and lucky tarver are prob his most significant wins now someone please tell me how this makes him a legend. for gods sake the guy never even unified the title untill about 10 years since he won his first. and notice how he only unified when it was smaller weight fighters who held those belts and not legite middles. and in what can only be described as possibly the most one sided middle weight fight in recent history and when both where in their primes he got totallly schooled from Roy Jones

  • oscar says:

he is a legend im from london and as a person think he is a real selfish idiot, but as an up and coming boxer his style really is text book his is a fantastic boxer. around that era and weight i would say roy jones then hopkins then toney. he is boring to watch but as for skills he is great

  • Blacklegend says:

    @lefthook

did you forget you posted twice?

  • Alan S says:

Steven Wain “Student + Boxing Fan” lol! =

Obviously, you are a “casual” boxing fan, who knows nothing about the Sport!

Bernard Hopkins fought Jermain taylor when he was OVER 40, and Joe Cowardzaghe when he was 43!! And he STILL destroyed the BUM and the COWARD that is Joseph Cowardzaghe! Hopkins dealt with Calzaghe easily and if he was a DAY UNDER 40, Cowardzaghe would be KO’d!!

Cowardzaghe?? Legend!!! lol He is a BUM and a COWARD who only ever faced fellow BUMS and out of prime 40 SOMETHINGS! Who did he ever leave Wales to fight thast wasn’t under-40 with a PULSE?? lol Maybe he should fight Muhammed Ali next!

Hopkins is surely a Legend who only ever legitimately lost narrowly to a 1993 PRIME Roy Jones when he was still very green. He fought in Quito, Equador at an Altitude of 10,000ft at two weeks notice!

STEVEN WAIN = ANOTHER PATHETIC JOSEPH COWARDZAGHE FAN http://calzaghe-is-a-coward.blogspot.com

  • Alex J says:

maybe you could use that empty jar and store your BS in it

  • James Mc says:

I am british and total disagree with this artical,i think hopkins is a legend, even against calzaghie,i tho hopkins win the fight and against rjj hopkins hadnt peaked at that point and still made it a very close fight, when at that point rjj had hardly lost a round fighting.

  • kıngy says:

Why wasnt Hopkıns Vs Pavlık mentıoned ın the artıcle?

  • Alex says:

Please don’t ever write a boxing article again if you are coming out with bull.hit like this. You are a moron

  • ez says:

Thats ridiculous this is not a boxing writer, just a casual fan sack him!!!

  • gmoney says:

good try..stupid attempt at an article. “Hopkins has fought noone of much interest”. How bout antonio tarver, glen johnson, oscar dela hoya, felix trinidad….Forgot those..How bout winky wright….

  • Ukansodoff says:

Ofcourse hes a legend. What an outstanding boxer and what a fantastic career at the highest level over a long period of time.

Dont forget his age, some might not like the way he fights but he wasnt always like this and to be honest pretty or ugly he does what he has to do to keep winning or atleast trying to.

  • robin says:

good article… Hopkins is a great boxer down from a legend

  • adamfillingham says:

best article i have ever read imo :D

  • nick says:

great article Steven, Hopkins was and possibly still is a great fighter, but a legend ? NO WAY. legends are the next step up from great fighters, men like Joe Calzaghe

  • Blacklegend says:

Sure Hopkins fight against Calzaghe was the best. After that fight everyone thought he was done for, than he shut up the critics by destroying Kelly Pavlic, The bible of boxing(The Ring) even reconiziged that accomplishment. They have him giving boxing tips in their magazine. The man is a definite legend, he may have had his low points but while boxers like Roy jones started fade, Hopkins showed he can still box with the young ones.

  • Paul Clare says:

You have to be Welsh, What a simpleton!!

  • Ben says:

Hes a decent fighter…. I like the guy.

But he did get his arse handed to him by Calzaghe. How anyone can say that was a close fight is mind boggling. All he did was jab and hold and pretend to have been hit by low blows.

Other than the flash knock down… i dont see anything positive he did in that fight, a fight i wont be watching again because it was so boring!

I do like the guy tho… cept his racist comments towards european people, i think hes a top bloke and a great boxer. To be fighting at the level he fights today at his age is very impressive.

  • calvin says:

well i’m british and as a boxing fan,i consider hopkins to be one of if The greatest pound for pound fighters of this era,as much as i love carl froch lets face it he would only get a boxing lesson from start to finish against the well rounded hopkins whos been fighting since the 80′s.
For a fighter to have been around that long and to have only ever been beaten convincingly once by roy jones by a m.d is trully great.
steve wain’ hopkins’s skill goes over your head, maybe you should write something with more points to consider.

  • Andy says:

That’s an outrageous statement. I can think of many uses for an empty jar.

  • pizat says:

your crazy benard hopkins was a legend…b-hop fought in ecudor nd france his two out of state fihgts….your crazy hopkins beat tito nd odlh by ko….then became the undisputed middleweight champion….bernard hopkins is a legend….ya dig?

  • Ant says:

You have no idea what you are talking about, Hopkins is without a doubt a LEGEND!

  • hopkins says:
