Hatton: “With Better Preperation I Could Have Done Better”
By Liam Santiago: My recent claims that Hatton lost to Manny Pacquiao on 2nd May in Vegas as a result of bad preparation on his trainers part have been backed up by no other than the Hitman himself. It seems that if no one else, Ricky agrees with me and so does anyone else who went anywhere near his training camp. Floyd Mayweather Snr let Hatton sail past his peak and left him mentally unprepared and unfocused. Hatton said, “That is the only things that niggles me about the fight and calling it a day. I know with better preparation I could have done better.”
Did you notice the fight was very late starting? That’s why. Yes, Mayweather messed up. He was plain useless. But, Hatton made the fatal mistake of teaming up with him. Hatton went on to say, “To be honest when I walked to the ring on the night of the fight I knew I had left my best preparation in the gym three weeks previous. Before I went to the US to finish my training my weight was spot on and I felt great but when I arrived I think I had left everything in the gym in the UK.”
You have to ask yourself? What does the result of that bout prove for Manny Pacquiao? Not a thing. What have any of his recent results proved? Beating fighters being drained in weight does not prove a thing. If Ricky had the sort of camp he had against Malignaggi, I very much doubt Manny Pacquiao would be number 3 on boxingnews24′s pound for pound ranking? On fight night, Ricky’s mindset was the only thing that was shot.
He wasn’t ready. He said “All I needed was one big shot and I could take out Manny and that was my hope. By the time the first knockdown came it was Pacquiao that had landed fifty eight punches on me and I just couldn’t get into the rhythm I wanted to. I had my hands held low and everything was all wrong. It was a devastating loss and I still haven’t watched the fight and not sure when I will be ready to see the fight. It went from my best training camp in the UK to my worst ever camp when I overdid it in the last three weeks.”
You can see why Hatton lost.
So, as we now understand, Pacquiao did not beat the Manchester warrior as a result of superior skill. He caught Ricky on his worst day and took advantage.
When asked about his future Hatton said, “I will have to say watch this space and wait and see.”
I personally would like to see him return and earn his way back to the top of the light welterweight division. I am even considering re-entering him into our pound for pound rankings, simply due to the reasons he lost that fight. Maybe Pacquiao and Hatton should switch places.

wow this guy is worse than Manuela perez
this writer is unique nobody agrees with his article. this is the guy i like sometimes u have to read nonsense it will wake u up he he he…
everyones entitled to there opinion and maybe if ricky was better prepared the result would have been ultimatly the same!!!!!!
What we can say for sure though is,,,,for the BIGGEST FIGHT in rickys career,,he was the most UNPREPARED he,s ever been!!!!!!,,,,and it shown,,,,true champs come back from defeat and ricky is just that, dont write the hitman off yet, because i think he,s gonna suprise a few people yet!!!!
why go with the fight when u knew you’re not prepared to accept a lossing cause? why dont just say i lost to a better fighter. aint any ones fault when ur not prepared or up to ur peak at fight nite. u got all the time for training and preparation..excuses and excuses.
no excuses … accept that you have been defeated … excuses are for idiots who cannot accept defeat … your preparation is of no importance to the other party , you have chosen your people, you should have done more … stop blaming … at the end it is you who should be blame …
With better preparation you could’ve written better. Maybe because you did not go to college and writing is just a hobby, maybe because you have no money to go to school, maybe it is just not in your genes to write, maybe it is just that you were too high with your drugs, maybe it is because are simply dumb to write, although you still love to write…. so we cannot blame you, Mr Liam Santiago.
Hatton’s next statement would be “If I had been a much better boxer, I would have beaten Pacquiao” or “If Pac would have taken it easy on me the first couple rounds, I DEFINATELY would have beaten him later in the fight” LOL!

Are you kidding me!! Are you an actual boxing writer?? If you are, and this is really your opinion, you are stealing money from your employer. Boy, you are worst than a 10 year old in making excuses. Are you really a writer?? C’mon, you’re kidding, right? Please clarify more, whether you’re joking or not. Are you really serious
Hatton & Pacquiao are both professional of vast experience. They SHOULD be prepared (months of preparation) before the fight. NO excuses the best fighter wins.
With better preperation H my ass wouldnt hurt me so.
Hatton just can’t accept being defeated. Why the hell did he want to be trained by Mayweather snr. in the first place. It’s like he couldn’t accept being beat by Floyd so got his Fatha to train him on the slim chance he could lean Floyds’s secret.
The Pac-Man would have still beaten him like even if Rick was more focused.
jim duggans spot on,ricky struggles with southpaws, remember aimon magee, first person to knock ricky down,,ricky was more cautious going into that fight with aimon than he was with manny,!!??he underestimated manny, thought he,d be alot stronger because thats what everyone was telling him,,,,,,ricky,s class tho ,do feel he should have tested the water before he jumped head first in,i dont think hes shot like everyone saying
Not sure if Ricky Hatton is a shot fighter, only time will tell. We will see in his next fight as im sure he will fight again. As for the people who say he is and was overrated, i think you should watch a bit more boxing, learn a few things and then im sure your opinion will change. He was never the greatest defencive fighter but then that was what people loved about his style. He was all or nothing. Just wish he would look after himself a bit more between fights.
you mean your own personal pound for pound ranking which doesn’t mean a thing coming from a self proclaimed boxing expert. sure you can do that after all thats your personal ranking. go on convince yourself. hahahaha!!!
Your recent claim is highly opinionated, and even if backed up by Hatton has no significance. I hope writing is not your day job.
You may want to think of excuses now for Cotto before he fights Pac. Cotto swallowed your cat before he fights Pac?
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE LATE ROUND STOPPAGE BY PBF
He could have beaten Hatton a LOT quicker than that.
PBF is not as aggressive a fighter as Manny Pacquio is.
For the umpteenth time I AM A HATTON FAN !!!!!
I just choose to live in reality land.
HATTON DID NOT SAY HE COULD HAVE WON !!!!!!!!!!
With better preparation he would have been KO’d in the later rounds at best.
Come on people he was outclassed!!!!!!!
Simple end of story…….
Why the hell are you still writing about this?????
youre both hilariously delusional Liam….Hatton will never be at par with Pacman…not then not now not ever…the fight was such a mismatch that Ricky’s fans might as well have been chanting “THERE SHOULD BE TWO RICKY HATTON” in that ring…LOL.
RICKY HATTON IS NOT SECOND RATE.
Hatton went for 10 rounds with the best fighter in the world since Sugar Ray Robinson. Hatton defeated a long list of respectabel world champions and became the undisputed and undefeated lineal light welter champion of the world. If you call that second rate, then you are clearly wrong.
Ricky Hatton had a lot of fights, facing the best competition on earth. The law of large numbers simply states, that eventually something has to go wrong. That also happened to Pac when he was knocked out and defeated. You can only step into the ring so many times with the best in the world before something goes wrong. But that has nothing to do with Hattons quality, it has plenty to do with his desire to constantly face the best in the world.
yay!!!… the self proclaimed so called expert is at it again. hahaha! preparation? I can’t believe you fell for that kind of reasoning. granted he did not prepare that well, he was supposed to be the best at 140lbs. and he went out like a light bulb after two rounds. As the best at 140lbs. supposedly he could have at least hang in there for 12 rounds. but then again you could give another excuse like hatton was overrated! man, you are one of a kind, no make that 2 of a kind with manuel!hahaha.
Last time i check theirs only one Pacqauio hater here, Manuel Perez. And now it multiple. Liam probably Manuel’s B!7ch. Enough with your old news, it’s done so shut the hell up.
100% FACT !!!!!!!!
Ricky has always been p4p material….
Your my new boxing guru my friend keep up the good work, i also agree with you 100% about what you said about hatton jr too!!!
these ppl are millionaires hardly stupid ppl pros who know what there doin with some of the best nutristionist trainers doctors in the world looking after them i do not see any room for excuses like i overtrained the weight i was ill not focused properly if theses are true your false advertising before the fight if hatton wasnt ready the night of pacman he could of walked away and offerd full refunds theses ppl are greedy and full of self importance just thank god for the lifestyle you havebeen handed to you and maybe stop treating fight fans like we are stupid
Anybody can say if they were better prepared theyd do better.
Hatton was prepared enough to tell the world in interviews what Pacmans trade mark shots were but then didnt even to try to defend himself against them on the night.
Thats what Hatton has always been like, hes not got the mentality of Amir Khan who does every little thing his corner tells him, hatton barrells in no matter who hes facing, always has.
Frankly if you ask any fighter if they’d have been better having done something differently in the buildup they’ll tell you “yes”.
Ask Amir Khan if he would beat Prescott now, I bet he’d say yes… Why? Freddie Roach and a much better approach to the sport.
In fact, ask Junior Witter if he lost to Bradley because he was the better boxer or because Witter didn’t turn up and his mind was everywhere…
You’re right, Hatton could have done a lot differently and it “might” have been a different fight. The big question though, is “so what”? It’s a part of the sport, and if you don’t prepare properly then you’re setting yourself up for a big defeat. Which is what Hatton did. Assign blame where you choose to, just keep in mind that if he felt that way three weeks before the fight, he had enough time to adjust his training and yet didn’t. That’s a pretty big error from a professional athlete.
“it was the ref.fault,Iam not really a welterweight, iwas sick going in to the fight, iwas overtrained, there was trouble in the camp, not enough of my fans had tickets,it was the trainers`fault etc”.Sounds familiar, that is a part of Ricky Fattons bestseller called “EXCUSES”,YOU CAN GET YOUR COPY IN ANY PUB IN MANCHESTER.
If Pacquiao loose to hatton, will you say he is not fully prepared on their fight?
You don’t know what you’re doing?
Listen mate you need to stop writting about Hatton Pacquiao saying “could he have won if…”
The fights done, Ricky doesn’t even want to watch the fight yet, so let’s just stop debating whether he could have won. We all have our opinions but this is a needless debate, Ricky doesn’t want to hear about it really
If they fight again, there’s a chance Ricky could last a bit longer and the end result will definitely be different — he will end up sprawled on a different part of the canvas. Ricky is not only shot, he is overrated to begin with. A perfect opponent for Pacquiao anytime of the day.

excuses, excuses, excuses ….. and it goes on and on…..
i think he wud have done better if he’d simply tryed to block anything. he just refusd to raise his hands when attacking, its a real shame cuz i think hattons a great bloke, hes a tru englishman…..
if he hadnt uv had the spotlight grabbing moron mayweather in his corner he may have had a better mind state on the night aswell, well nt might actually, would have for certain!
this is not boxing news pound for pound list, its your list! you are writting articles about how clever you are and even though i agree slightly with your oppinion on this you are writting in a poor style and flooding this site with articles by yourself in a very short period of time
i backed ricky to beat paq but had to be aware that rickys’ style is made for southpaws. ricky got beat by a southpaw because his hands were down and he didn’t see the punch coming maybe if the preparations were better he would’ve lasted longer but with hindsight i feel it only would’ve been a round or 2 longer. after the collazo fight i made the statement that ricky should never be matched with a southpaw again, but still felt he would be too powerful for pacman but bad preparation or not you can’t argue with the result and hatton looked 2nd rate in comparison
You refer to yourself as an expert in another piece that wrote, arrogance of the highest order. This story absolutely proves you know nothing
