Cotto – Not if, but when…

cotto342343249By Will Cruz: On November 14, Miguel Cotto will state his case as the best pound for pound fighter in the world. Many writers, fans, and so called “experts” have overlooked Miguel Cotto almost as fast as this fight was put together, and continue to dream about a mega fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.

The more I think about all of the factors in the Pacman Cotto fight, the more I am convinced that on November 14, Miguel Cotto will solidify his case as best P4P fighter in the world and will derail 2 things that night; Manny Pacquiao and a Paquiao vs. Mayweather fight! Miguel Cotto is at a disadvantage in the weight issue, the money split, fighting in Vegas, and speed, subsequently the only actual boxing disadvantage, but none of this will matter when they step in the ring.

In an interesting interview by Freddie Roach recently, he claims that the Cotto/Mosley fight will be the lead in his development for a fight plan for Manny Pacquiao. His analysis is accurate in that Cotto was able to use his effective timing to neutralize Mosley. His comments carried a bit of overconfidence in my opinion and I believe that is the beginning of the end of Manny Pacquiao’s chances to defeat Miguel Cotto.

The problem with Freddie Roach’s analysis is that it isn’t complete! And they will put all their eggs In one basket. Miguel Cotto does have excellent timing, but has underrated speed, underrated defense, and an underrated ability to adjust to every style thrown in front him. It is incredible to me that Cotto is underrated in so many areas but somehow still outshines his opponents and ultimately comes out of every fight as the better fighter.

Heart is what Miguel Cotto signifies, but SKILL is what will earn him the victory against Manny Pacquiao. He will box Pacquiao beautifully in the early rounds, neutralize Pacquiao’s speed with timing, and ultimately close the distance in the ring and at that point Freddie Roach will realize he made a mistake and uncharacteristically overlooked a fighter as skilled as Miguel Cotto.

So when Miguel Cotto defeats the Pacman, once again the question will be why Mayweather won’t step up and fight the best P4P fighter in the world and as Bob Arum comically stated in Cotto’s last post fight conference, Mayweather will probably go after Ivan Calderon next.

  • lloyd says:

well, both of them have advantages and disadvantages so everything remains the be seen. watch cotto vs pacquiao live here

  • ej says:

will cruz, like manuela perez you are a fan of anybody who fights pacquiao. the truth is we don’t know who’s gonna be raising his hands after their fight! how many so called boxing experts failed to predict the outcome of pacquiao’s fight. most of them got it wrong and they are supposed to be experts like dundee. so please if you think you know boxing better than roach go and be a trainer…your opinion does not amount to anything..do you know why because nobody knows for sure who’s going to win that fight on nov. 14!!!

  • guest says:

My prediction..Pacman by kO within 6 rounds!..thats only my opinion!!1 peace

  • marcos says:

omg! crazy how many of u ppl bring up the fight with cotto and margarito.cotto beats mosley, the fight with margarito vs mosley once he’s team found out about the glove ppl said this man was looking scare not focus the fight start and he gets beat up bad.yo cotto still fighting and still wining.90% of u ppl that comment are pacman fans.pacman teams dnt have any idea wat they getting there self into.cotto will break down this man slowly and will win i dont care if is by ko or decision.pacman will fight and hard i know that.but he will know that cotto is not de la hoya or big time over rated hatton.end of story.

  • Ukansodoff says:

I predict Cotto will beat Pacman, probably by KO.

But regardless Manny Pacquiao will still be the P4P king. Its a fantasy title and you dont fight for it. If you beat the man who is the P4P king that doesnt automaticlly make you the top dog.

Hatton was goin on about it for ages, beating Pacman and becomming P4P king. NO CHANCE.

Manny Pac is the P4P king win or lose this next fight. Cotto doesnt go up and down weights and in my opinion not even the best Welterweight.

How on earth can he be seen as P4P king?

  • Will Cruz says:

    Lanrog,
You contradict yourself. My article was in no way an analysis of the fight itself, but my opinion on the fight outcome and an attempt to give Cotto more respect than he has received from many others. Your response and reaction to my article shows me that you are a Pacman fan, does that make you a wannabe??

  • gman says:

i agree, cottos timeing will be the key!! cotto is going to be so focused for this fight!!k.o in the 9th!! que viva puerto rico!!!!

  • ROOTS says:

This fight would`nt go 5 rounds,it will be a mismatch.Cotto will be too big and strong for him.Cotto is much faster than people seem to realise, and i think he will be up for this fight likr a mother.

  • G man says:

i have been looking forward to this fight for years, wishing it will happen, i am a big fan of both fighters, i dont care what any one says this fight is to close to call, this is going to be the fight of the year.

  • lanrog says:

The problem with boxing wannabes like you is that your analysis on forthcoming fights are so one sided, so opinionated and not supported with valid and proven facts. You and Manual Perez are the kind of people that counts the chicks before the eggs are hatched. I think you need to improve your techniques in analyzing situations and write with a fair and balance reporting, no myths.

  • HenryL says:

Cotto should not underestimate the size difference between them, because that is where Pacquiao will kill him. I think when Diaz, DLH and Hatton saw this little guy come out of the ring, they got too confident and thought they can overpower him easily. They found out the hard way that it wasn’t that easy when Pacquiao started pounding them with relentless lefts and rights. If that happens, It doesn’t matter how large Cotto is, he’s going to end up the same way the others, lose by KO.

  • CocoMotion says:

Miguel Cotto is at an advantage in the weight issue. He’ll officially weigh in at 145 lbs and on fight night he will weight 154 lbs.

Or maybe you are correct, the extra weight of 9 lbs on fight night may slow him down.

  • MA Cotto says:

Superb article! Finally someone giving Cotto the credit he deserves! I just hope Miguel’s face can stay un-cut then for sure we are in for Cotto taking that p4p spot…………and then to give Floyd his first L!

  • Webber says:

I love this fight because its an highly intriguing one and feature two real stars fighters but unfortunately no often one want to see our two top favorite fighters fight each other and this pair alone with Kelly Pavlik are my very favorites in the sport.

Today is August 12th 2009, right? ok grab your pen and write this date down because a fan offered to you in advance the outcome of the Nov. 14th mega fight so expect this:

The fight will be in the middle of the ring. Manny will stay most of the time out of Cotto’s reach while Cotto will try to chase Manny all over but in the proccess Manny will be connecting on every Cotto opening.

Cotto will in fact hit Manny with some punches but they will lack Cotto’s full power because they will be on the move and they will be few often in between.

Pacquio will remain an elusive target the whole fight and will be connecting with more regularity as the fight progress.

Manny wont KO Cotto as many people suggest but the fight will be stop in the late rounds either on cuts or to protect Cotto from unnecessary punishment.

  • Mike says:

I honestly think manny is going to struggle with the body punching of cotto. I’ve watched the JMM fights and every time he went to the body pacquiao looked hurt. cotto is one of the best body punchers in the sport and i think he will shock a lot of people come fight night. Doesn’t matter what i think tho i predicted hatton to win and i got totally proved wrong! Regardless of the outcome i think its going to be a cracking fight!

  • FP says:

    WC,

” I don’t blame Freddie Roach for utilizing that tape, it makes sense, however I believe that they will make the same mistake all the other fighters and trainers did, and that is to overlook all of the other dynamics as well.”

I agree, most good trainers will look at film and point out weaknesses. It may be small like quirks here and there but it will be one of many to target. Same goes to Cotto. At this stage, these guys aren’t club fighters. They are Prize fighters. You point it out, practice to take advantage of the weakness and hopefully apply it in the fight. But in the end, it’s really up to the fighter. Both fighters will brawl. there is no doubt about it. I like Pacman’s chances because of his workrate. Cotto, I believe needs to be lean. If he goes to 160+, he’ll be too slow. He’s already the heavier guy. He won’t lose power but will gain more quickness.

If I was Cotto, I will take a close look at the David Diaz fight. Diaz blocked alot of Pacman shots.

My predictions is a bloody fight, both having cuts. I still believe speed kills and if you add a heavy workrate, it’s just a great combination of Offense and Defense. So hesitantly, I’m picking Pacman.

But Cotto has the power that will test pacman’s chin.

  • Anthony says:

Im a fan of both these fighters. It should be a great fight but I think pacmans speed and power will be too much for Cotto and he’ll be stopped in the late rounds.

Looking forward to it though!! should be a contender for fight of the year

  • Abbs says:

Funny, before DelaHoya fight everyone thinks that Oscar will be too big. The thing with Hatton, Hatton will be too strong and what happen after the fight…Excuses, excuses, excuses. Oscar was dehydrated, too old, washed up. Hatton is overrated and doesn’t have skills, etc.

Well guess what, Pacman will prove you wrong once again and Im sure we’ll here excuses again such as Cotto was dehydrated, but this time you won’t be able to say that Cotto was washed up. Cotto supposedly the younger and stronger fighter and still on his prime.

    PACMAN will crash Cotto

  • Ukansodoff says:

Being the P4P boxer on the planet is not as simple as facing and beating the man who is.

Pacquiao will remain the P4P king regardless of result. And im a fan of Cotto and am tipping him to KO pacman.

  • jonathan says:

if u look at the cotto vs mosley fight u see that the way to beat cotto is to apply pressure at all times, wee seen that vs margarito and we saw it against clottey. Roach has said that they won’t go toe to toe with cotto. Alright in order to apply pressure on cotto u need to be bigger and stronger than cotto and a natural welter. Manny does not posses what it takes to apply pressure on cotto, yes he has speed but it won’t be enough, and even though he has great stamina I’m 100% sure that against a natural welter he won’t be able to box 12 rounds with cotto, I saw manny breathing through his mouth against oscar. I am puerto rican but I am not a nut hugger I am a fan of boxing and I truly love watching pacquiap fight he reminds me of tito trinidad In the sence that they are both people’s champions and fight for there country. In my honest opinion I think pacquiao will end up very hurt against cotto, and trust me it is very difficult as a fan to see your national hero lose, I been through that when tito lost to hopkins, its hard to over come. If pacquiao wins I would love to be in the phillipines to see the hero’s welcome.

  • alphonso says:

underrated defense???? lol my 10 yr old lil girl can hit cotto with a left or right upper cut at will LOL

to me the fight is like cotto vs zab meaning cotto has to get pacman out of there by the 7 or 8 round or he will lose- cotto tends to tire in the later rounds and pacman can fight 3 min or every round for 12 rounds also even if cotto wins he wont be p4p champ just as if hatton won he would not be 4p4 champ

  • Will Cruz says:

    FP,

Yes Freddie is stating the obvious, and I’m sure he will study more than just one tape, but my point was that the Cotto vs. Mosley fight is as Freddie Roach said in the interview, the main tape that he will utilize in his analysis. I don’t blame Freddie Roach for utilizing that tape, it makes sense, however I believe that they will make the same mistake all the other fighters and trainers did, and that is to overlook all of the other dynamics as well. When you do that, I don’t see how anyone believes that Manny will defeat Cotto.

  • Will Cruz says:

    Lupet,

This is my own article. And if it sounds like you have heard it before then it’s because others might see what I see. And to correct you, I don’t believe anyone was saying the same thing about Hatton, very different fighters between Hatton and Cotto, and that was not just discovered but well known by those who know even a little about boxing. Thanks for your comments though.

  • Anonymous says:

    I agree with u 100 percent.

  • nepster says:

I still feel that this fight could be a toss up…I’m a big Pac fan, but man…I’m nervous…I just know it’s going to be explosive. However, I think if Cotto does walk away the winer, I’m not sure if the fight with FMJ would get made. FMJ would probably end up fighting Calderon or asking for a rematch with Hatton!

  • Balk says:

I feel Cotto has something to prove in this fight. I think we will see the pre Margarito Cotto show up against Pacman. I like both fighters but I feel Cotto will over power Pacman with body punches.

  • jimmy says:

I agree with u 100 percent. How can u overlook cotto. He is going to destroy pacman.I don’t understand how pacman is the pound for pound champ. He beat 2 washed up fighters. If pacman would of fought margarito and then clottery I beat those would have. Been 2 loses for him .Nov 14 will be the day cotto will get his credit .

  • NEO says:

Cotto has more power and will KO manny

  • Danny Washington says:

i think Cotto will win, he will be too strong.

  • FP says:

“The problem with Freddie Roach’s analysis is that it isn’t complete! And they will put all their eggs In one basket.” How do you know that?! are you a boxing trainer? Freddie is just saying the obvious. They will study ALL the tapes of all the fighters Cotto fought.

Manny has his weaknesses as well as Cotto. The thing I don’t like about Cotto is that his head is always down looking at the opponents body and too stationary. He needs more head movement against a sharp shooter with an excellent workrate. I think he needs to be no heavier than 155 or less to be nimble.

  • Deggy says:

Makes sense to me, good article. There are a few questions for me though over Cotto. Has the Margarito fight really damaged him as a fighter? He’s looked impressive in his fights since but in my opinion, not a patch on how he was fighting before Margarito. How will he respond to the drop in weight? I believe that Roach and co believe their man has the upper hand when Manny is moving up or staying at the weight and their opponent it dropping down which results in some cases…weight drained. Manny is an amazing fighter and my jaw drops open everytime ive watched him recently but if the Cotto pre Margarito turns up then I don’t think Manny will be victorious. If the Cotto since Margarito turns up then Manny will stop Cotto on cuts.
