Can Pacquiao Hit Harder Than Margarito?

margarito3424By Tom Stokes: Freddy Roach gave a little insight into Manny Pacquiao’s (49-3, 37 KO’s) game plan for his super fight with Miguel Cotto (34-1, 27 KO’s), explaining that he wanted to keep Pacquiao moving in and out so he doesn’t take a lot of punishment from Cotto, but is that game plan going to beat Cotto and furthermore like many of Pacquiao’s fans are saying, will this game plan knock Cotto out.

Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s) who relies on his good footwork and movement around the ring, found that he couldn’t quite execute his game plan against Cotto , as Cotto made Mosley fight flat footed by switching to a counterpunching style against Mosley, now if Pacquiao’s game plan is to use a lot of foot movement he could find himself in trouble as Cotto has shown he can box against this style, saying that if Cotto does manage to throw Pacquiao of his game, does Pacquiao have the power and pressure to stop Cotto without getting hurt himself.

When Antonio Margarito (37-6, 27 KO’s) fought Cotto he took a lot of punishment from Cotto in the first half of the fight, and he was able to weather the storm, and in the second half Cotto appeared to tire allowing Margarito to apply pressure and beat Cotto, and although Margarito may have loaded his gloves in this fight you can’t deny that he took a lot of punishment from Cotto and had the staying power to finish the fight, you could say that Margarito laid out the blue print to beat Cotto.

But Pacquiao doesn’t fight like Margarito, and if he was to, I’m doubtful of the fight going in Pacquiao’s favour, his speed is his biggest asset in the ring but against Cotto he will need to throw a lot of power punches to throw Cotto off mentally and physically.

In Pacquiao’s last two fights he’s defiantly shown that going up in weight class has increase his punching power, which he demonstrated against De La Hoya, stunning him many times during their fight, I don’t even think De La Hoya had any idea that Pacquiao would be that strong, and I doubt Hatton thought that either when Pacquiao knocked him down twice and then finished him with a devastating left hand.

Pacquiao does have power in both his hands, but Cotto now knows this, and he seems to be taking the fight very seriously already opening training camp, he’s going to do everything he can from letting Pacquiao get those powerful shots off(as power as Margarito, probably not) bit still Pacquiao is a huge threat to Cotto and vice versa, but I’m not certain this fight will end in a KO, roach won’t send Pacquiao in guns blazing, he will want Pacquiao to protect himself from Cotto’s punches as he is the biggest threat to Pacquiao yet, he’s a strong welterweight and although he may have mental scare’s from the Margarito fight, Cotto’s not a shot boxer yet.

So although both fighters are big punchers I can see it being a strategic fight, as Pacquiao will be protecting himself and waiting for Cotto to slip up before he lands his shot, and I can see Pacquiao’s speed being a problem for Cotto who will have trouble finding Pacquiao around the ring. My prediction, I can see this being a long night for both fighters so I wouldn’t hold your breath for a knockout.

I really hate fanatics who just recently started to watch boxing and talk all this ish about Pac destroying Cotto.Sure he’s fast but didn’t Marquez rock Pac’s chin a couple times? And I’m pretty sure Cotto has more punching power than Marquez, had been Cotto Pac would’ve been knocked out.And whoever says Pac hits harder than Margarito, is just dumb, plaster or no plaster. Those of you who question Cotto’s chin look at the Cotto/Margarito fight, he did not drop him, Cotto took a knee, his legs still looked fresh it was his swollen face that bothered him the most….Cotto by K.O. by the 7th round.

  • don hurtme says:

cotto do best with 26 oz gloves…hide behind them

  • Tom Slick says:

Pacquiao hits far sharper and with far more speed. Precise combinations will add to the iluusion that he hits harder than Margarito. In any event, the effect is extraordinary.

  • evgo says:

hey Wonder .. YOU ARE SPOT ON . Manny is only now starting to fight at his natural weight. he has beasted his body for years to keep his weight down. cotto and his corner are gonna get one hell of a surprise. pacmann will be packing plenty of power plus speed..and pressure pressure pressure

  • DaInfamous1 says:

Manny hits harder than margarito that’s a lil far fetched plaster or not

  • DaInfamous1 says:

the game plan is not goin to work for the simple fact he been in the ring with fast opponent with moment (mosley malignaggi) he’s down been in the ring with a fast southpaw (judah)and has success changin into a counter puncher against all of them mention pacquiao loves a fight and I think as long as cotto counters he not going to get one jmm had success the 2nd fight but he didn’t maintain proper distance once he hurt manny..no doubt about it cotto will hurt manny some point in the fight and I have no doubt in my mind cotto will keep proper distance and beat manny ill say cotto wins via tko 6 rd

  • LMAO @james mc! Cotto whooped Judahs @ss what the hell were you watching? Hollywoo I agree let em sleep & let them be dissapointed come Nov, 14th!

  • hollywoo says:

a lot of u guys are gonna be in for a good surprise, pacman never went against anybody with a chin as good as cotto’s nor power. i see cotto coming out victorious. will be a hell of a fight tho, unless someone gets knock the f out.

  • Goo Lay says:

As has been said in the past: if the fight goes over 7 rounds, Pacman knocks Cotto out.

  • Riverita says:

Well, I saw a video where a guy was saying Margarito did say or admit that he had that plaster on for Cotto’s fight, I don’t know if is true, but, I believe he did use that that night.
Now, I see Cotto taking the fight very very seriously, I have never seen him being so into being in shape and having the best training posible. So, don’t be surprise if Cotto have the best fight of his career.

  • NEO says:

manny does not hit as hard Margacheato because he used loaded gloves……unless manny also loads his gloves….

  • knobhead wonder says:

wonder you dont kow what you are saying..do you?

  • rob says:

ive just found out cotto has swine flu so this articloe, altho poor anyway, is irrelevent

  • danny says:

cotto will cry out after being ktfo, “he ain’t powerful, just too fast, huhu.”

  • Axman says:

There is no way Pacman hits as hard as Margarito. His strength is not his power but his speed and footwork. I see Cotto putting up a valiant effort but if Pacman hits and moves and keeps Cotto turning all night, he should have a relatively easy victory. He is a disciplined fighter who sticks to a game plan so with the speed advantage I think he should win.

I hope JM Marquez beats Floyd Jr. who may be overlooing his adaptability and intelligence (not to mention experience) in the ring. He’s already looking past Marquez to Pacman for a payday.

Then when Margarito comes back we will see who Pretty Boy runs from again before another self-imposed retirement. It is just getting interesting…

  • richel says:

just look for the last two fights of cotto its to big different on his style before. i think pacquiao has the big edge on this fight speed and power will kill cotto especially the BIG KILLER PUNCH…remember the power sweet left.

  • Guvo says:

Ezralira. I agree.Cotto will not be able to see in the later rounds with all the cuts and blood filled eyes. Manny will do as Margarito did but with may be a little less power but a lot more punches.

  • james mc says:

i think peopel over estamte how good a chin cotto has got, think how many times hes been droped or roket in his carrear, plus how can people say cotto deal with speed fighters well,he was made to work very hard for a victory over malignagie and strugled for the 1st have of the fight against judah untill judah ran out of gas,i a do agree tho that cotto eaisily has anuf power to stop pac,but in pacs last 2 fyt against dlh and hatton,i thought even a weight drained dlh would be abel to catch pac and ko him,and that hatton would be abel to take a few shot and be abel to land something big and that pac out,and both times pac has produced sumfin unbelieveabel to stop both oponent,so this i m going for pac, would be stupid do bet against pac again.

  • BisDak says:

The Margarito punch are different from Pacman’s. Margarito punch comes from his torso and then to his fist. Cotto is the same, i.e. from the torso.

The most spectacular KTFO are punches like Pacman’s. Lots of energy from the ground up. See lots of YouTube videos and those type of punches that will KTFO.

  • BisDak says:

Pacman’s hitting power comes from his legs. He pivots, then that energy is channeled thru his torso and then to his fist. Watch the Hatton KTFO.

  • BisDak says:

IMHO, if Pacman gets hit a flush Cotto punch, I’m pretty sure he gets KO.

But if Cotto gets from Pacman the way Pacman did to Hatton, then I’m pretty sure he gets KO as well.

As I said, this is an even-steven fight. The winner is the one who doesn’t underestimate his opponent.

  • Natdizzle says:

If they haven’t already, I personally would like to see Pacquiao and Cotto stand toe to toe to see how much bigger Cotto really is. I went to a filipino event last year and I stood about 4ft from Pacquiao. Pac’s height on record is about 5’6, which is my height. When I saw him, it seemed like he was a at least 2 inches taller than me which I found to be very surprising. I even checked to see if he was on higher ground or if he was wearing heels. He is not as small as people make him out to be (at least not from where I was standing).

  • MBA says:

My concern in this fight is how Cotto will take Manny’s punches because he is going to get hit more often than any of his previous fights..if he can take it, then Manny will have his hands full this time..because Cotto can press his attacks without hesitation..then he will have a chance to knock Manny out..if not he is bound to lose by decision or knock-out cold in the middle rounds.

Nobody can really be so sure about anything..

  • ezralira says:

Expect a beating worse than Pacquiao-Diaz and Pacquiao-De la Hoya, finished off by TKO or KO more spectacular than Pacquiao-Hatton. Hopkins has said it. Cotto’s face will not hold until the twelfth round.

  • Austin roff says:

Obviously manny doesn’t have the power of Margarito. hes big and and even though without plaster he still punch strong..BUT its pacquiao’s speed that makes him win his games allowing him to take his opponents out of stamina..as soon as he did that he will knock him out. thats what he did to hatton, when he saw him stumble 2 times he knows he hatton doesnt have stamina left in him and when he saw his biggest opportunity hu just bangs him with his left punch. Cotto is too big for pacquaio but pacquio will go on the under and will surprise cotto- Pacquiao wins in 11 with KO with cotto bloddy face and pacquiao swollen face

  • Pacquiao is a monster says:

Pacman hits harder than margarito- You should ask Hatton-

  • Pacquiao is a monster says:

I was neighbor of pacman back home in general santos. I saw it my own 2 eyes when he punched and a 200 lb man. As a result, the 200 lb man suffered a concussion- Now thats power– pacman will KO cotto in round 1.

  • Reflex says:

Raider you really think that Margarito had no plaster, there was blood on his raps, in were it is beleave it was from his previous fight. I wounder why was he band for a year.

  • JaCar says:

I do not think anyone realizes how hard Manny can hit. This guy started at 106lbs and knocked out a natural 140lber. I will admit, Cotto has a chin of iron and that is definitely something will need to worry about. I am a fan of both, but I am a much bigger Pacquiao fan. The fight will be awesome!

  • amusedfan says:

Shot boxer? why does most writer here use that excuse for pacquaio’s opponent.

    What’s their basis? A loss?

Remember that pacquaio also has a loss record and many would argue that Marquez won the fight against him. So why can’t you consider pacquiao a shot player? Both shot players fighting each other so it doesn’t really matter now, isn’t?

  • Cho-T says:

Watch the Clottey fight very closely.

    That’ll answer all your questions.

  • Raider says:

Margarito didnt have no plaster.. Cotto lost period.. and no way does Pacman hit harder than Margarito… Cotto vs Pacman can go either way, pacman’s speed will be the difference on this fight.

  • nepster says:

I think Pac proved his power comes has carried with his weight. His last punch to Hatton would have knocked out an elephant on meth. But the question remains, can Pac take Cotto’s power? Every one knows Pac has speed, but the deciding factor is going to be how well Pac can take Cotto’s punch.

  • BisDak says:

I think the Pacman will fight Cotto the way he fought De La Hoya. De la Hoya was big. DHL was even very certain that he can beat Pacman convencingly.

    But DHL was surprised on two things;
    1) DHL did not expect the Pacman is really that quick.
    2) DHL did not expect the Pacman can throw heavy punch because he thinks Pacman is small…

I can see this fight even-steven. On fight night, the loser is the one who underestimate his opponent.

  • teo says:

forget about mr cement gloves Marcagheato!

  • Brian says:

Margarito puts plaster in his gloves. Of course Pac doesn’t hit harder.

  • minnow says:

Cotto has more then enough power to ko pacman. The question is will he be able to make pac exchange punches with him, this i doubt cause pac is going to be on his bicycle all night. If cotto could get to pac’s body and take some steam out of pac stamina i have no doubt cotto will win via ko !!

  • jonathan says:

i like this article finally a good question ..does manny have the physical hability to beat cotto .cotto is real good fighting guys who have $speed .if manny wins i would rank him one of the best top ten fighters of all time.

  • vinboy says:

Hatton hurt manny a few times in rd 2 before geting ko so maybe cotto will do what diaz/oscar/hatton have all failed to do.

  • Andy says:

I think that the Pac man has the edge in this fight as he is brimming with confidence at the moment and looks better every time he fights.
Dont think Cotto will ever be the same after the defeat to Margarito and wont be able to get near him.
A points win for the Pac Man

  • danny says:

when cotto falls, teddy atlas would say, “i told you so. miguel’s damaged goods.”

  • Wonder says:

Oh, it’s the same analysis that never gave the Pacman any chances against anybody…Cotto has never fought or seen a fighter with flyweight speed, but welterweight power. It will be an interesting fight to watch, of course, Cotto will carry a lot of support being the “underdog.”

Dela Hoya was expecting Pacman to “tag” him the entire night…only the bell saved him…too bad for Hatton, the bell didn’t come soon enough.

This will be a very close fight (Cotto). Please remember that many folks in impoverished countries like the Philippines, Pacman was undernourished when he started fighting. At 5″7, his natural weight (now with proper diet and nutrition) is welterweight. Roach knows this…

  • objective says:

this will be one hell of a fight… both pacquiao and cotto will be in for surprises… this fight is way much better than the mayweather-marquez squabble set on sept something… hehehehe!

  • mike says:

The article will be relevant to consider two years from now, when Pacman’s engine starts to rust.

  • Hateful says:

Marquez doesn’t have anywhere near as much power as Cotto and he rocked and stunned Pacman quite a few times. Good question Joe. I think one big hit from Cotto will at least take Pacquiao’s legs away.

Personally I don’t think Pacquiao’s speed will affect Cotto as much as people think. Cotto is very experience with speed fighters… Judah, Malignaggi.. just to mention a couple… and I also think Cotto’s ability to adapt is amazing, and with knowing what Pacman camp’s plan of attack is, i think it’ll easy for him to figure it out…

  • Joe says:

My question is on Pacmans chin it hasnt been tested really since moving up to lightweight and so on. Hatton didnt test it nor did Diaz
