Campaign to get Boxing back on British Television

froch35By Liam Santiago: Like most British boxing fans, I have been totally disgraced to find one bout screened on British television over the last month or two. With Setanta going bust and ITV refusing to screen any more boxing ; we are in a tricky situation. What we do see usually is not free. However, a campaign has been started and a facebook group has been created to give support.

Boxing News Online has asked the BBC to either screen the Super Six tournament or the November mega fight, Miguel Cotto vs Manny Pacquiao. I am sure that the BBC have enough trained team members to understand that this sort of screening would be of major interest to the British public. Whether or not the BBC decides to follow this plan of action is a totally different matter. Boxing fans in Britain seem to be the most loyal to their sport than any other, yet they are treated the worst.

A Facebook group has also been created in order to gain as much support as possible for the campaign. The link for the group is http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=155348562576
The group is aiming to build as much support to put pressure on the BBC to screen major fights. Please join and invite all your friends.

Carl Froch and Junior Witter are just two of the big names that have been ignored by television companies this year. Something has to be done or fans simply won’t stick around. Can you imagine how football fans would react if they never had any football to watch? We have so many major fights coming up and currently none are being screened in Britain.

woods fight we be shown on secondsout.com you gonna black list this one whoever??

  • bazooka says:

The BBC would rather pay big money on African and European footballers mincing and diving around.
There plenty of good fighters out there willing to entertain true fights fans.

  • otmlondon says:

apparently mayweather vs marquez will be shown live on sky sports 1 !!!! there is a small article promoting the fight in the sky tv mag.

  • anon says:

to scottish davey-it was originally planned for sky box office, but then the fight was rescheduled.but unless it has benn changed it should be on sky box office

  • Mike says:

Agreed and what about our very own clinton woods on friday???? Hopefully epsn will start showing some, they are already showing espn fight night =)

  • Guvnor says:

I’m not on facebook, is there anywhere else i can add my name to the growing list of fans that are getting fed up with this total lack of respect towards our modern day boxing heros?!

  • scottish davey says:

can somebody tell me if we will be getting the mayweather marquez fight on brittish tv

  • RMC says:

To add to this, IMO Sky is just as much to blame as the BBC/ITV with regards to sport dying on terrestrial TV. Sky KILLED mainstream sports years ago. I know the example I’m going to use is about cricket but people will understand where I’m coming from. Just under two million watched the climax of the 2009 Ashes compared with 7.4 million when it was on free to view terrestrial TV in 2005. NUFF SAID, SKY SUCKS JUST AS BAD.

  • Guvnor says:

Totally totally agree, it is getting beyond a joke. How about PPV ESPN now that is on Sky TV?

  • RMC says:

The BBC prefer to spend some of our TV licence money on sending 200 of their staff to Glastonbury for a jolly, fat bonuses and men in scalextric’s cars!. In-fact they would rather spend the money on Wimbeldon so we can all watch another Brit fail to make a final. Jesus we have a genuine World Champ in Froch, who’s about to take part in the biggest event in boxing for a long time and he’s not getting a look in……..it’s a JOKE

  • Joe says:

Froch vs Dirrell will be on BBC but normally a week later if Froch wins.

BBC wont have the big fights i.e Pacman Cotto Sky box office will have that.

Are only hope is ESPN UK which isnt looking good and skysports and they would rather have rugby league and golf

  • j says:

thank you for writing this article!!! everything you’ve said is true, the fact that the carl froch fight was not supported by any tv station is a disgrace

  • Oli says:

im sure sky sports WILL be putting cotto vs pacquiao on (which i dont mind paying for).
However Sky sports have let me down, they used to show loads or most top boxing…mayweather, cotto, pavlik, hopkins, mosley everybody but when setanta came they stopped so its all setantas fault i say. we were watching all the fights without paying extra on sky sports.
