Audley Harrison set for Return – News

harrison33By Liam Santiago: Audley Harrison is set to return to the ring to compete in Prize-fighter’s third heavyweight boxing tournament on October 2nd at the York Hall. Current British Champion Danny Williams and Michael Sprott are also entering the tournament. The three have a big history with each other with victories and defeats to each other but many are asking the question, has Audley got anything left?

After winning gold at the 2000 Olympics the future could not have seemed brighter for Harrison. Things went great for the London man until Harrison suffered two back to back defeats at the hands of Danny Williams and journeyman, Dominick Guinn. Harrison then went on to get knocked out in the third round by Michael Sprott and conceded another defeat to Martin Rogan. So according to what’s on these three fighters records, Harrison should not stand much of a chance. However, fights are not won on paper or by records, so, who knows, Harrison might come back better than ever.

Of course, Big Aud is no Muhammed Ali and he certainly has not got Manny Pacquiao worried about losing his pound for pound spot. But it would not be the first time a fighter has come back from defeats and proved his critics wrong. At thirty seven years of age, I very much doubt Audley will ever be in contention for a world title challenge, but Harrison can have a good try at smaller prizes.

A £32,000 prize is up for the winner of the tournament.

Andyboy – Danny is only going in for the competition to get a chance at Harrison, youre right, he’s gonna pull out the day before as he knows he cant handle Danny!

  • Matt Bellshaw says:

Agree mate.. Danny is taking it, what a night its gonna be!

  • Jason Mitchell says:

Danny Williams is taking this one home, hes got more heart, power and skill than than all the rest, and Mark F your right about those fights – that Mark Potter fight has to go down as one of the top ten best ever bouts… check out williams vs mark potter on you tube!!!

He can talk the talk, but can’t walk the walk.
I would rather watch paint dry

RMC is right. Audley was given big money before he’d even thrown a punch in the professional ranks which was a big problem for his motivation.

Bestowing such riches on an unproven fighter is not popular with fans either – see the booing at Amir Khan and James DeGale fights.

According to Lennox Lewis in this month’s Ring magazine he feels fighters should earn respect in order to get big money and he’s right. Had Audley needed to take the same route to fame and fortune as everyone else the story might have been different, but because he won Olympic gold, papers such as the Sun etc were talking him up from day one and the public (and Audley) believed the hype.

If he wins the tournament look for more Audley hype, until he gets starched by a moderately good fighter. For me, the most likely outcome is he will pull out before the competition starts.

    Stop Oh lord Fraudley’s back.

  • john,e says:

He,s useless its just easy money other than getting a monday to friday job or a door job but then again he’s likely to get knock out.

  • Owen says:

bit of a pointless article to be honest, i mean who cares about AUdley Harrison

3 of the most hot and cold fighters in here, Danny Williams is probably Britains most fustrating heavyweight (if not fighter) ever, 3 performances of his stick in my head as fond memories,

Mark Potter; check this fight on youtube,Dannys right shoulder was dislocated and it made me cringe to just see his arm hanging yet he persevered and KO’d potter with a left hook.

Tyson; Tyson was shot but could stilll hit, he wasnt the same by any means but it was more Dannys killer instinct that was great to watch how the big stage brought it out of him.

Konsantin Airich; This was just brilliant how Danny coped with the corruption that comes with Mainland European boxing, in an 8 rounder Danny had been deducted 2 points unfairly, counted on a blatant slip and just as he was getting the upper hand during a round, a man in a suit was seen talking to te timekeeper and the bell was rung halfway through, Danny stayed calm though and stopped him in the 7th.

Other than that though a lot of his performances are lacklustre, he dosnt throw enough shots in fights which is a shame because he can bang.

Lets cap it all off with bringing Frank Bruno out of retirement lol

you know what i mean harry?

  • RMC says:

Correction ” possibly should have achieved” very tired!

  • RMC says:

IMO Harrison made his money too quickly and too easily from cheap fights and Olympic gold. He then rested on his laurels lost all motivation and went to pot. Looking back at his performances as an amateur at the Olympics, I will admit he showed signs of true promise, but in general turned out to lack the heart and motivation for the professional game. 3 round fights may show a different Harrison? but win or lose in the end it makes a mockery out of what he possible should have achieved.

  • Liam says:

Cant wait for this, bring back old memories when unfortunately them three and skelton were the best heavyweights we had. Wish skelton was there aswell but although they’re poor fighters, I think over 3 rounds the fights between these three will be great to watch. True brawls.

  • Mr Rich says:

Audley was probably the best in the world at talking a good fight. They should have gave him a belt for that lol

Who really is gonna pay to watch them fight? Actually i’d pay just to see him get knocked out.

  • Ben says:

I was under the impression the cash prize was more like £80,000 not £32,000

Either way i wish i could watch this, it sounds exciting.

Good luck to the man, he didnt live up to his hype, he was amir khan beta. He was the test dummy, no doubt frank warrren wont make the mistakes he did with audley with the new olympians.

  • geebs says:

old news.. c’mon son give me something i dont know!

  • SteveMcG says:

Oh dear, he’ll make a spectacle of himself again. Poor Harrison, he’s a big lumbering oaf. He’s quite simply scared of getting hit, which has never proved a great attribute if you have world champion aspirations.
