Who’s Currently the Most Overrated Boxer?

By Stuart Gant: Critics and haters around the world often look at Joe Calzaghe’s record and instead of looking at the highlights in his career they always look at the fights that he missed.
As a fan I often support Joe against his critics and believe he was a great champion and a future hall of famer. I admit pulling out of fights against Glen Johnson and giving boxers like Peter Manfredo Jr title shots can easily be criticised but he still beat some big names including, Chris Eubank, Mikkel Kessler and Jeff Lacy and he also retired undefeated.
Kelly Pavlik was one of these boxers Joe never fought and at the time Kelly Pavlik had an unbeaten record and many said he was unbeatable. With his record Pavlik was similar to Joe in the fact that he was unbeaten and had beaten 2 top class fighters in Edison Miranda and Jermain Taylor. The real difference came when Pavlik stepped up and faced the aging Bernard Hopkins who had lost 3 of his last 5 fights including his latest loss to Joe Calzaghe. As soon as the bout was over and Hopkins had dominated Pavlik who looked awful, Calzaghe was quick to say “I said all along Kelly Pavlik was overrated, overhyped and hadn’t done anything in his career to warrant a fight with me. This was evident Saturday night when Hopkins destroyed and exposed him for what he is.”
Now you quickly need to realise that Hopkins is a true great and still shows greatness in his performances but what I’m suggesting is perhaps Pavlik is overrated. I think the true test will be if the Paul Williams-Kelly Pavlik fight happens.
The next man I am going to mention is going to be very controversial as he is currently listed as the Pound for Pound King. You guessed it I am going to bring Manny Pacquiao into this debate. Most recently Pacquiao has hit the top spot in the P4P rankings after two unexpected stoppages against Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya. I think perhaps the Ricky Hatton fight should be seen as a good victory for Pacquiao as he was impressive, showing great speed and power. However, many believe Hatton was a shot fighter who was lucky to beat Juan Lazcano a year before the Pacquiao fight and seemed to learn nothing from the Mayweather fight chasing Pacquiao around the ring. The De La Hoya fight in my opinion was a no contest because it wasn’t the real De La Hoya there. The De La Hoya that turned up was a drained fighter just so he could make the weight. At the starting bell De La Hoya didn’t even look a well man never mind a man ready for a boxing match. Even Roach said he saw IV marks on De La Hoya’s arm, pointing out that he needed to be rehydrated surgically as a last result. Another name that appears when Pacquiao gets criticized for being overrated is the respected Mexican counter puncher, Juan Manuel Marquez. The first match between Marquez and Pacquiao could have gone either way but the second match was a horrendous decision. Marquez should have been given the victory in the fight as he seemed to win most of the rounds after the knockdowns in the 1st.
Like Pavlik, Pacquiao can once and for all prove himself as he is going to fight a tough opponent in Miguel Cotto and then possibly face Floyd Mayweather or for a 3rd time Juan Manuel Marquez.
Other possible overrated fighters that should be included are:
* Amir Khan – Been hurt by poor opponents and KO’d in under a minute against Breidis Prescott, he is clearly very talented but has a Glass Jaw.
* Edwin Valero – He is calling out big names because of his perfect 25 win record all by KO but he is yet to fight a good opponent and backed out of a fight against Breidis Prescott.
* Nicolai Valuev – He is only the champ because of his height and weight. He is slow and not overly powerful and he lost to Ruslan Chagaev who in turn got dominated by Wladimir Klitschko.
If you can think of some more overrated boxers I’d like to see some comments and reasons for picking them.

you overrate pacman who’s giving you the most exciting boxing fight in this era?…pacman came up from 135 to 147 to challenge de la hoya. I think nobody in the 135lb division could beat pacquiao at that level. Consequently, I don’t think de guzman or juan diaz at 135 or even Juan Manual Marquez at 135 is better than what you called the “drained” de la hoya at 147?
If they fought someone else, not Pac:
HATTON – still on most pound per pound list
ODLH – still making a lot of money fighting B+ fighters
DIAZ – still WBC lightweight champion
J M MARQUEZ – definitely not #2 pound per pound, may not even be on the list, because he stayed at 130
MORALES – would already won a 135 belt
BARERA – minus 2 loss on his record, maybe even 3 or 4, PAC made him much older than he already is
I don’t see how Pacman can be overrated, although I do agree that DeLahoya was drained. What I really don’t get is that before the Pacman- DeLahoya fight and Pacman-Hatton fight, most of the fight fans had picked delahoya and hatton to win against Pacquiao. And after the victories people would come up with excuses. I think with the exception of DeLahoya, in the case dthat he did looked drained. With the hatton fight people said he wasn’t right after he lost to mayweather. Now you say Pacman has to beat Cotto to prove that he isn’t underrated. And when Pacman does beat Cotto you’ll make another excuse that Cotto wasn’t right do to his lost to Margarito, I guarantee that will happen. Pacquiao have chosen great boxers to fight in the ring. Name other boxers in this era who is as fearless as pacman
I see another using Pacquiao’s name to get more hits on your article just like Mayweather, Dela Hoya, Schaeffer and Marquez use Pacman’s name to sell their fight.
Marquez fought an old Casamayor and Juan Diaz, who may generate a lot of punches but not very powerful (look at his KO record).

5 – Joe Calzaghe – how he slapped his way thu boxing and kept winnin is beyond me?

Roy Jones in his prime would beat Joe ?? Roy in his prime was done for abuse of steroids! Joe wasnt even in his prime when he schooled Lacey he was more or less just coimng out of his prime due to hand injurys cos of his fight against Evans ashira, and every fight since that he`s not been able to punch like he did before. But yet his boxing skills have seen him through.
Joe only fought fighters in his own back yard?? Roy turned the chance to fight Joe down in his prime cos he wanted more money fighting domestic opposition on HBO plus the risk was too high, Hopkins backed out of a fight one day before it was to be. Dont get me wrong i respect Jones and Hopkins they are legends but so is Joe.
Hopkins made Joe look bad that was his only chance to call bluff, cos he knew he had no chance toe toe like he did against Pavlik. On a bad day jones and Hopkins will lose but Joe still wins, this is through resilience and great boxing skills and tactical adjustments. If Joe were a yank the yanks would Praise him, and guess what so would i!!

Author was idiot! Pacquiao is one of the Top ATG in the world!!! He became the first Asian boxer to win 6th divisions world titles . He is the Ring Magazine as the #1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world. He is also the 1st boxer to win the lineal championship (“the man who beat the man”) in 4th different weight classes Next target: He has a chance to be the 7th division world championship title at Welterweight. I bet the author cannot even get one belt!

How can “Manny Pacman Pacquiao overrated.” From Flyweights rising into Welterweights and capture all title divisions, that is a great accomplishment for a boxer. Champion boxer’s have great egos. That’s why when they loose, they make up excuses because their egos could not accept that somebody defeated them. This is the case of Oscar de la Hoya. If you watch the HBO 24/7, de la Hoya mentioned that he trained not to make the weight but for the fight and he will knock Manny out. But it did not went in his ways so he makes up the excuse that he is weight drained. Not humble and gracious in defeat. The Marquez fight, Manny clearly won those two fights. On the first fight, a judge clearly admitted that he made an error regarding the first round score. The second fight, I watched it three times and Manny was the clear winner. Pacquiao fought the best and continues to fight the best in Cotto. Even Mayweather avoided Cotto. So how can you tell his an overrated boxer. If you have nothing good to write man, just keep it to yourself. You should write facts and not your own opinion which is quite offensive. Why is everyone debating on Marquez vs Pacquiao 2?
When’s the last time you saw Marquez get dropped like that before the Pacquiao JMM 2 fight? If boxing rounds lasted for 5 minutes, JMM would have been gone. You saw him wobble pacquiao but you missed the part where JMM got flushed the face twice including one where he fell on the canvass and somewhere at the latter rounds where he had to hold on to the ropes to gain balance.
I hope they get to fight again, and I hope Pacquiao finishes JMM off this time so nobody would have to complain about anything.
JMM’s a badass, anybody would struggle with him. Even Mayweather (he’s in for a huge surprise). But if you can point out when he last went down the same way Pacquiao had dropped him then I’ll agree with you that JMM should have won that fight.
A lot of Boxing writers still don’t see the logic why Manny Pacquiao beat Ricky Hatton in two rounds. I am not a boxing expert but I can see why Manny keep on winning.

Nice article but I dont agree with the pacman issue, When a boxer wins via decision, there’s almost always a controversy. Judges score the bout based on criterias and fight fans base their judgements on who they idolize. with regards to the 2 matches between pacman and JMM, pacman won that fight because JMM got knocked down in the early rounds of the fight and JMM couldnt finish pacman or put him down also just so to warrant a draw.

if calzhage’s punching is weak, how do you explain jeff lacy’s face or roy jones jr. after the fight? He may not have the knockout power but i don’t think his punching is weak. he won all his fight and i’m sure if you ask all those he fought with they’ll say they were hurt by those punches.

You forgot the top of the most overrated list which is Mayweather. Clearly, he was beaten by Castillo-look at Compubox stats and the fact that there would be no fight if Castillo did not chase him around the ring. Pacquiao is as fast if not faster that than Mr IRS. Believe me, Mayweather has never fought anyone like Manny and will get caught and Manny wuill be all over him. Hey stupid Get your fact straight. Marquez got knockdown 3 times in the 1st round on the first fight. Then on the 2nd fight, he got knockdown in the 4th. Both fights were very hard to judge. The first fight is definitely a DRAW. Ok marquez fought back but ONE judge made a mistake and scored round one as 10-7 instead of 10-6. 3x knockdowns and pac definitely won the round so 10-6. But I understand why it was draw. The second fight was too close to call but the knockdown was the difference. Marquez didnt dominate the majority of the rounds to say he got robbed. Get YOUR FACTS straight or write it well you incompetent journalist, YOU!

I am black and Canadian with Caribbean background and I am convinced Pacman clearly beat Marquez in both fights. You blind Marquez fans don’t realize that to come back from a 10-7 round you must win the next 3 rounds just to get even. Then you must win 5 of the next 8. If you are saying that is what happened then you need your eyes checked. If you consider the 1st rd should have been 10-6 and not 10-7, that shows that a draw was a gift to Marquez.

Marquez is a very good boxer but Manny is great! He barely beat Barrera and once again got knock down. Manny schooled Barrera twice. Are you telling me that wins versus Casamayor and Juan Diaz are better than Hatton, Oscar and the other Diaz? Casamayor is old and never was as good as Oscar. Hatton is better than Juan who was badly beaten by Campbell. Not recently nor overall can Marquez match Manny.

I was a Pacquiao basher before, but he has convinced me that he’s accomplished a lot where others have failed, whether I like his style of fighting or not. I definitely think he’s not overrated. Call me a pacnuthugger or what, but if greatness is not measured by accomplishments but by technique and weaponry, then the greatest fighters of today are Solis, Darchinyan, Mayweather Jr., Cotto and Lopez. Why aren’t writers putting these fighters on a pedestal and instead bashing those with great accomplishments? Pacquiao is one of the MOST experienced of today’s fighters having 53 fights, while many are in the 30s and some 40s. I give credit where it’s due.

Where are these writers BEFORE the fights???? I would imagine, since they know a lot about boxing, they would come up in droves protesting an upcoming fight as being a mismatch, or in the case of Dela Hoya – dehydration, or whatever reason you have. Even Beristain and Dundee testified that Dela Hoya was fit and ready to go and in tip-top shape at the night of the fight! Even most writers saw a Dela Hoya walking over Pacquiao! I guess this writer picked Dela Hoya or other Pacquiao opponents to beat Pacquiao and lost big money on those fights. The real reason why Pacquiao is rated so high is because he continued to defy the odds!!! Since His fight with Ledwaba, most saw Pacquiao as losing. But time and time again Manny keeps proving the writers wrong. Nowq these writers think it’s payback time to downgrade his accomplishments. Kelly Pavlik made his way to the top by being a one dimensional fighter throwing his jab-jab- strong right hand. That didn’t work with Hopkins.
I also feel Pacquiao is overrated. Hatton should have retired after his LOSS to Collazo. De La Hoya was dehydrated and shot. Leave it to the Filipinos to believe that Hatton and De la Hoya were both in their primes.

carl froch is without a shadow of a doubt in my opinion currantly the most overated.
no handspeed, slow on his feet,non-existent defence and although he has good power he cant land on a moving target and was totally out classed by taylor and looked to be a very clumsy fighter against pascal.
My question is.. if PAC is overrated then Mayweather and Marquez are overrated too. How can champion in different weight class be overrated? All you have to look at is the body of work his other opponents have fought and you will see how great he is. Also, he beat legends in KO fashion. This is a big flaw of this article.
As far as skills go…I think Pac IS a little over rated. That’s coming from a Pac fan. He does deserve his Pound for Pound ranking, don’t get me wrong, and his wins against Barrerra, Morales, Marquez, and Hatton were very impressive, but if people think he’s going to walk all over Cotto, they are sadly mistaken. I think Pac has the tools to beat Cotto, but for him to be a 2 to 1 betting favorite is beyond me. He’s by far the most exciting and I know all his fights will end in a bang…I’ve never once regretted paying $50 for a Pac fight.
Mayweather on the other hand…his skills are unworldly, but his quality of opposition is lacking.
Pavlik is over-rated…being schooled by b-hop.

Pacman got the belt on their second fight and Marquez as a challenger should at least knockdown Pacman – but it never happened?!? So, bullocks about those critics saying that JMM supposed to win on those 2 fights between JMM and Pacman.
With regards, to de la hoya. Oscar was the favourite before the fight. All boxing analysts were rooting for De la hoya — and take note, the catchweight had been dealt beforehand and still they make de la hoya their favourite. And after fight, SUDDENLY Pacman had been critised as OVERRATED?!??

GREAT ARTICLE!!! The part about Pac is dead on. I have always believed he is over rated. The 3 fights since Marquez proved nothing. David Diaz (chump and easiest belt holder in the light weight division at the time) De La Hoya (old and drained) Hatton (easy target with little skill).

People dismissed the win of Pacquiao against de la Hoya because they thought he was weight drained,but de la Hoya said before the fight that he was in the best shape of his life and his nutritionist said he was strong and not weight drained,the real reason was de la Hoya’s punches could’nt land the target,if Pacquiao was hit by those early punches,surely he will be in dream land,as what Nacho said,we will stop the fight,he was too fast.
calzaghe’s record and acomplishments are overated but not his skill. the only person in super middle or light heavy who might be able to beat him is chad dawson if he had more power. B-hop in his prime wouldn’t have beaten him because he would have held a lot less and that would be to joe’s advantage. prime jones would have had a decent edge in a fight cause he would have a higher work rate his power is still the same but even calzaghe couldn’t slipp punches from old jones all night.
i don’t think pac man is overated both marquez fights could have gone either way but he has way more notable wins on his record than marquez.
khan is overated for the moment i don’t think his chin is as bad as most people think but hopefully he steps up and fights bigger names
Khan definatly, alot of heavyweights that have stepped in the ring and looked like they aint even trying when they lose. And who knows Haye could well be there, a fantastic Cruiser but yet to really show if his mouth is honest or hype.
I cant agree with Pacman being overrated. Hes the P4P king and from his recent achievments he deserves it. Im still to be convinced he can take the power of a top Lightwelter or Welter and he may be a bit out of his depth but even still you dont have to move up and down the weights to get that P4P title.

Great article…. I do not agree with Paq man being overated however I agree that is was nowhere near the real De La Hoya in that ring! If Paq man beats Cotto then in my eyes with out question he has to fight Mayweather Jr then we can all really see who the best P4P fighter
