Vitali Klitschko Close to Deal with Arreola for Sept 26th Bout – News

By Jim Dower: World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KO’s) is close to a deal to fight his number #1 WBC contender Chris Arreola (27-0, 24 KO’s) on September 26th at the Staples Center, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. Klitschko, 38, had been planning on fighting British heavyweight David Haye, but fickle fighter decided he liked the idea of fighting WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev much better and decided to go in that direction instead.

Arreola, 28, may turn out to be an even more exiting challenger than Haye would have, because Arreola seems to have better whiskers and a more aggressive style than Haye. The last thing that boxing needs is another mismatch and with Vitali’s powerful right hand and Haye’s glass jaw, there was a high possibility that he was going to blow Haye out of the ring had their been a fight between the two heavyweights.

As it is, Haye gets a much less dangerous puncher in the form of 7-foot Valuev and a better chance at winning a title. In turn, Klitschko gets a big 6’4” opponent in Arreola, who may have the power, youth and aggressive enough style to test Vitali in the fight.

Its doubtful Arreola will be able to beat Klitschko, because he’s never been in the ring with anyone as close to being as good, but he will probably make things difficult for Vitali for three to four rounds. With Haye, there was a good chance that Vitali would end matters with his first punch landed.

Rafael also reports that HBO has no interest in showing Hayes November 7th fight with Valuev. It really comes to no surprise, because Valuev hasn’t impressed during the few times that his fights have been shown on U.S. television. In his last fight, Valuev looked horrid in struggling with a 46-year-old Evander Holyfield in December 2008, beating Holyfield by a 12-round majority decision in Switzerland.

Many people outside of Europe felt that Holyfield won the fight, but many European strangely felt that Valuev had done more than enough to get the win. It’s hard to say why the fight was seen differently because it seemed cut and dried to me. Holyfield landed the harder shots, threw the better combinations and basically outworked Valuev.

HBO probably wants to avoid having any potentially dull fights involving Valuev shone in front of a national audience in order to protect their ratings. Haye can be an exciting heavyweight, but he really hasn’t been tested as of yet in the heavyweight ranks, and he might just implode if Valuev forces the Brit to fight.

Haye has already backed out on Wladimir Klitschko, claiming that his back was hurt and couldn’t make the June 20th fight. Haye seemed dumbfounded afterwards when Wladimir refused to wait three to four weeks for Haye’s back injury to heal up. Whatever the case, Haye is counting on the WBA title to be something that will change the Klitschko brothers’ minds in the future. It may not.

I don’t think his weight is a problem. DON’T FORGET THIS IS NOT A BODYBUILDING CONTEST. This is a boxing match. I think he needs a good defense, a solid strategy to get past that left jab, goog conditioning and endurance in case its to 12 rounds, a mental conditioning. By training some of his weight will come off as a byproduct, but he should not concentrate on losing weight just training hard, even if he looks like a fatso for fight night. Like I said, He needs to fight good not look good.

  • Diego says:

Arreola TKO 10th round or by decision. (Knock downs from both sides) If he can get past Vit’s left arm (jab), the fight is over. No recent boxer has been able to get past that long left arm sticking out there keeping the opponent away. If arreola does not have a strategy for that, he will lose. He needs to study the fight with Lewis and any other fight they (Both brothers) lost. And use a similar strategy.

If the fight happens it will most probably be a brawling match (YEEEEEEEEAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!)
    About friggin time.
Arreola had better get his arse in the gym and come in around 240 lbs.
My prediction – Vitali Klitschko TKO 8th round

  • arreola says:

yeah this is the fight i wanna see…wow
arreola is the only one that could beat Vitaly currently
    prediction:
    Arreola by KO 4th round

  • truefan41 says:

This is the kind of fight that should be made. Should be exciting for as long as it lasts. This is a vastly superior fighter to what Arreola has ever faced. He could not have any tougher fight than this. I don’t think Arreola can take many power shots in this one. Vital in 4, but I look for some good action.

  • PHX602 says:

    make this fight happen

  • Ukansodoff says:

Arreolas big chance is nearly finalized, i so hope he takes it serious, trains hard and sheds a few pounds. His talent is guna dissapear behind the flab if he keeps goin like he is.

Fully fit he really is one of the better boxers in a really poor division.

But to be honest i think the only person that id put money on beating Vlad anytime soon is his brother and thats certainly not on the cards at the moment.

I bet Arreolas contract is a hell of alot sweeter than the one Haye was given.

it will be interesting to see what arreola weighs for this one.i am thinking he comes in 15-20 pounds lighter for speed.what do you guys think?

  • D. Coy says:

Wow-This will be one hopefully without commercial interuption. Exciting and bloody battle betwen these two tough cored fighters without a doubt. Arreola is not a slow tank, he just takes his time proportioning out his clubbing blows and if you think at this very moment he isn’t training like never before, think again.
Vitali Klitschko continually brings to the ring his power, ultra-conditioned boxing frame, years of experience and his dedication to this sport. And of course the Ring Champion HeavyWeight Champion Wladimir in his corner.
When Chris Arreolo is knocked out by Vitali Klitschko, it may even register on the Richter scale. The Klitschko brothers are simply just that talented for the status quo of the Heavyweight Division.

  • jase t(england) says:

you lot are going to pounce on me for this…..arreola inside 8 rounds

  • LOL says:

Klit Against arreola will be the same fight as the peter fight. Vitali will destroy the slow tank easy

  • Chris Pole says:

Im European and I thought Holyfield won the fight, as did all the other Europeans I spoke to. Please dont make stuff up just to stir up your Europe vs USA agenda.

And Haye would beat Arreola no problem, I like Arreola but he also has a glass jaw and he is a lot easier to hit than Haye as he is slow and lumbering.

Vitali to win this one easily.
