R.I.P Arturo Gatti (1972 – 2009)

gatti46453By Simon Hirst - Legendary former world champion Arturo Gatti, 37, has been found dead inside a beachside flat he was renting at the Hotel Dorisol of Porto de Galinhas, Pernambuco, Brazil. Gatti had arrived with his wife and baby on Friday on their honeymoon. Local police consider his death suspicious. He was found by his wife with a head injury.

Gatti, nicknamed ‘Thunder’ last fought in 2007, losing via KO to Alfonso Gomez. In his career, he fought some top level opposition including Floyd Mayweather Jr and Oscar De La Hoya. The two weight world champion is also famously known for one of the greatest trilogies in boxing with his three fights with Micky Ward, which he won the rubber match.

Speaking on behalf of BoxingNews24, I would like to send my condolences out to Gatti’s family.

A TRUE CHAMPION MORE THEN MAYWEATHER WILL EVER BE

  • I met Arturo @ the age of 14 in Norfolk Va, before he became the warrior everyone knows him to be, his heart and determination as corny as it may sound changed me as a person. I am crushed to learn of his death. He held boxing together single handedly for years, there will never be another like A.T.G! Thanks for all you Gave! RIP!

Thats fair enough wayne, i never read properly, i deeply apolagise.

  • Wayne Lord says:

I luv gr8 articles & R.I.P., it is people like you who fail exams because you fail to read and understand the whole question. You then give an opinion rather than an answer to the question. If you fully read my article you won’t say I am knocking Gatti!
For people like you who did not understand my article, please see Mike Burnell’s article on Gatti. I have also attcahed another article in more detail explaining my love and respect for Gatti as a Warrior. The name Thunder describes who he was….a true warrior.
It is not up to us to determine if he will be a HOF but if excitement and heart were the only requirements, he would be a 1st ballot entry. I love the guy and wish more fighters had his heart and will to win. Now I have made this in simple words for you R.I.P and I LUV GR8 ATICLES. Please do not misinterpret it again!

  • Wayne Lord says:

When Diego Corrales died, I said the same thing. I really enjoyed his fights, he had tremendous heart and ducked no one. He and Gatti fall into the same categeory as Ward and Castillo. They were all exciting to watch and very hard workers who gave 110% everytime. But IMO they are not HOF fighters with that extra talent.
I gave him his respect. As a Canadian I am extra proud for what he has achieved. But I am sure that this is the same thing that anyone who knows about noxing, wil say.
If he and Corrales both got voted into the HOF I would be extremely happy but surprised. But note although I said he was not a HOF fighter, I said in terms of excitement they were HOF. I also said he never ducked anyone.
Anyone who reads these pages would know I always criticize Mayweather for having the talent but no guts to fight the tough guys. I would watch a 100 Gatti fights before I watch one Mayweather fight. But it does not change the fact that Mayweather is way more talented than Gatti.
Why can’t people read the whole article rather than focus on one area? I repet, there are some athletes who have great talent but never use it well. And there are those like Gatti whom I really admire, that get the maximum out of their limited skills. AND THAT”S A FACT!

  • R I P says:

whata talent he was. im in tears. i love u gatti. rip.

  • Wayne Lord says:

Not the fighter with the most talent I have ever seen. But for sure the fighter who got the most out of the limited talent he had. His tremendous hard work and heart were the keys to his fights.

I enjoyed watching him because he ducked no one. I doubt he will be a HOF but his fights were HOF material in terms of entertainment. He will be missed. R.I.P. Thunder. You made Canada proud!

What a true warrior and a sad loss. His trilogy against “Irish” Micky Ward the greatest ever. The first bout in particular, the best I’ve had the priveledge to view.Afficionados only seem to glorify contests from yesteryear.Forget that guys-get a grip, grab a few beers, find it on you tube, reminisce and enjoy.I’m about to!Sod the missus-good as she is,she can wait!Cheers Arturo!

  • underalias says:

To be remembered with the best of them.
An image that comes to me is that at the end of one of his great fights with Micky Ward, where he and Micky were exchanging blows, then the bell sounded signaling the end of the fight and both exhausted fighters embraced in the middle of the ring.
He truly gave it his all in the ring, there is no greater compliment for a fighter.
