Mosley: “This Guy [Pacquiao] Obviously is Scared of Me, So Let’s Move On” – News

By Dave Lahr: Earlier this week, Shane Mosley (46-5, 39 KO’s) made it clear that he was tired of waiting for Manny Pacquiao to fight him and was telling Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer that he moving on, giving up on a fight with the Filipino star, who is considered to be the pound-for-pound number #1 fighter in boxing by segment of the community.

According to Dan Rafael, Mosley said to Schaefer “This guy [Pacquiao] is obviously scared of me, so let’s move on,” meaning that Mosley will now start looking at other opponents like Paul Williams, Kermit Cintron, Zab Judah and Andre Berto. Mosley was hoping that Pacquiao and his promoter Bob Arum might look his way after Mosley destroyed Antonio Margarito in a 9th round stoppage in January.

However, Mosley, 37, may have made a huge mistake of looking a little too good in beating Margarito and in the process of winning the fight, he could have scared off both Pacquiao and Arum while doing it. Pacquiao has looked good in winning his last two fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, but those wins pale in comparison to Mosley’s one-sided beating of Margarito, a fighter who would have likely wiped the deck with either De La Hoya or Hatton.

Mosley doggedly went after Pacquiao for a solid two months, even getting help from other Golden Boy Promotions employees to assist in trying to get Pacquiao to agree to a fight. However, not matter what Mosley was willing to do, Pacquiao and Arum showed zero interest in the fight.

While Mosley is considered to be the best fighter in the welterweight division by many people because of his win over Margarito, Pacquiao and his fans point out that Mosley has been beaten not too long ago by Cotto in a narrow 12-round decision in November 2007.

For this reason, they feel that Cotto should be the one that deserves a fight with Pacquiao. They tend to dismiss the win that Margarito has over Cotto last year in July 2008 in which Margarito almost ripped off Cotto’s face in the process of forcing him to submit in the 11th round.

Cotto hasn’t looked like the same fighter since then, which is why people wonder about Pacquiao’s interest in fighting Cotto. With Pacquiao not interested in a fight with Mosley, Shane has to look at some different alternatives. Mosley will be turning 38 in September and can ill afford to sit idle for much longer. He has to find a suitable opponent.

Pacquiao’s fans feel that Mosley is dodging Paul Williams, who is kind of a hybrid welterweight that fights in a number of divisions all at once. That would be a tough fight for Mosley because of his history of doing poorly against taller fighters like Vernon Forrest and Winky Wright. However, it’s probably he biggest one out there for Mosley in terms of making money and getting attention from boxing fans.

Williams, 27, has been interested in fighting Mosley for quite some time and would jump at the chance to make the fight happen. Williams currently holds down the WBO light middleweight title, and would have to lose some weight to make a fight against Mosley happen. But Williams is young enough to take off the weight without it effecting him too much.

Berto, the WBC welterweight champion, was previously interested in fighting Mosley before Shane fought Margarito. It’s unclear whether Berto would still be interested now that he’s seen what Mosley did to Margarito. The whole perception about Mosley has chanced entirely in the past year.

A year ago, Mosley has struggled to beat Ricardo Mayorga in September 2008. But Mosley looked like a completely different fighter against Margarito, like he had lost 10 years of his age. Trying to arrange a fight with Berto might not be all that easy now, if at all possible.

That would leave Kermit Cintron and Zab Judah as potential opponents. Cintron, 29, recently defeated Alfredo Angulo by a 12-round decision for the interim light middleweight title eliminator bout in May. Fighting Cintron would be an interesting fight. However, it would mean that Cintron would have to move back down to welterweight to take the fight.

Whether he wants to do that would be the big question because Cintron is going through a career resurgence with his win over Angulo. He might not want to mess things up by moving back down in weight unless the money is good.

Judah, 31, has a fight lined up for September of this year against Matthew Hatton, the younger brother of Ricky Hatton. Judah won’t be available until later on this year unfortunately.

    Vince,
Mosley is crying. PBF didn’t go on every station in the world trying to make a fight with Mosley. Then check out the excuses Mosley came up with when HBO tried making a fight between Mosley and PBF (1. I am going on vacation., 2. PBF and Margarito should fight then I’ll fight the winner., 3. My tooth hurts it’s a little loose, I haven’t thought about it yet.)
The third excuse was the most shocking. We are talking about boxing and Mosley says his tooth hurts.

If you don’t believe it youtube it here is the web address (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uz9qVhLIY0)

  • Dnell says:

Mosley is only calling out Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather jr. for the paychek only. Point blank period. Cotto deserves the fight with Pacquiao (he’s beaten Mosley already). I think Cotto is really undefeated his only loss coming from a cheater who wraps his hands with hard liquid plastic and then claims he doesn’t know that his trainer puts it on his hands (how can he not know, is he not watching his hands get wrapped). Boxers come up with anything to try and land a fight that makes them alot of money without looking at the facts. Sugar Shane I had alot of respect for you before this, your on every TV and radio station trying to setup a fight with Pacman (Cotto beat you, explain that) Stop Crying!!!!!

PS: Is Sugar Shane Mosley broke? Someone please let me know.

  • Vince says:

It’s amazing how when Mosley tried to make a fight with PBF,how the PACMAN fans were saying PBF was scared, but never mentions PBF tried to make a fight with Mosley a couple yrs ago.But now when the shoe is on the other foot, you all are saying Mosley is being a crybaby for trying to get a fight with PACMAN.

  • marlon says:

pacman is not afraid to shane,he only wants to fight on his level.shane is old and of course if he loss for an agreed weight, here comes again the excuses.just like when he beat de la hoya, hatton ,the mexicans.pacman – cotto is a good match.

  • The Brahma Bull says:

Mosley needs to move up in weight to fight Williams. Mosley keeps calling out Pacquiao because of 2 main points: 1) Big PAYCHECK 2) nothing to lose. Mosley wants Pacquiao because, at 38 years old, he has nothing to lose. If he loses, he’ll blame it on his age or the fact that he dropped down in weight. Everyone keeps saying Mosley is a true champ. If he is, why doesn’t he challenge Williams, someone who’s naturally bigger instead of someone who is naturally smaller, such as Pacquiao. Pacquiao has everything to lose because he keeps moving up in weight. What weight has Mosley fought at in the last 10 years? What about Manny? What has he fought at in the last 10 years? Who has done more moving in weight classes? If Mosley is a true champ, he needs to stop chasing the smaller man and prove himself against a bigger man. That’s what Pacquiao is doing. His las fight was at 140. Now, he’s moving up again to challenge someone else. Mosley should do the same thing. But yet, he keeps chasing Pacquiao. He never chased him before. But now that he’s the big name in boxing, Mosley wants to chase him. Seriously, is Mosley a real champ. It looks like he’s only chasing big names to regain his popularity. Is Manny really the champion he should be fighting? He only wants to fight Manny to be in the spotlight. Mosley is old and no longer a big name. He’s only popular in the boxing world. Manny is much more popular now.

Therefore, how would Mosley look if he beats a smaller man? Only Mosley fans will think that he’s a true champion. How would it look if Paul Williams went down in weight to fight Hatton for his title before he fought Manny? Exactly. Mosley will look like the coward for chasing a smaller man and not fighting the bigger man. Look at Cotto. He’s not chasing Pacquiao. He doesn’t look like a moron chasing him around. Cotto’s not looking down to fight Marquez or someone smaller. If Pacquiao challenges him, so be it. Mosley shouldn’t chase smaller men either. Mosley should be fighting someone at his weight or bigger. Mosley should only fight someone smaller if he’s challenged. If he’s not, he shouldn’t challenge someone smaller. Think of it this way. Klitschko shouldn’t challenge Paul Williams. But, if Paul Williams challenges him and decides to move up in weight, then Klitschko should fight him. It’s what Williams wants. But, if Klitschko challenges Williams because he’s one of the best out there, then Klitschko will look like a big coward.

So, basically, Mosley needs to stop crying over Pacquiao. He’s just naturally bigger. It’s sad to see a big man cry over a little guy. It just seems pathetic.

  • the dude says:

I say give the old man a chance for a big payday. How do you expect him to pay for the deposit on a solid gold crapper?

No wait, he’s a partner in GBP!!!

  • don juan says:

He might be right but Mosely is scared of Paul Williams

  • Pavlik-enemy#1 says:

One Hitter Quitter. So you saying because Mosley is getting old that he deserve to fight the cash cow Pacquiao! FMW and Pacman are two of the most famous and #1 P4P right now, they call the shot, and thats your privilege for being #1. Mosley have this opportunity before in his career. he has an opportunity to fight FMW, and FMW even call him out but he didn’t even give Floyd a chance. Now he brag about FMW and Paquiao ducking him, pleas! So why Cotto deserve this fight more than Mosley? simple! coz Cotto beat Mosley. and it’s more easy for Arum to make a deal with the fighter in the same stable. Mosley is a great fighter, but he will never be the best, coz he always fall down when he rich the top(Vforrest,Wwright and Cotto)and he dont have a charisma like Dela hoya. funny part is he beat Dela hoya twice, but still, Dela hoya is more famous than him. Marsquez and Cotto are going to lose. wow! what are you a fortunetellers! you should tell them that, they might back out.

  • hehehehe says:

I saw Mosley making his reservation for “the home for the aged”

  • henryarmstrong the2nd says:

settle down there mr mosley, you will have your chance and turn to kiss the canvas. you are talking to henry armstrong encarnate, yes a legend!

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

I agree, Paul Williams has had plenty of time to prepare for a true champion like Mosley. Mosley shouldn’t hold back on Williams and simply outbox him like Carlos Santana did. Oh wait… Mosley punches 100x harder than Santana. Maybe that’s why Williams is in hybernation cause he knows that Mosley is looking for an opponent.

  • The New Golden Boy says:

Sugar Shane obviously put himself in this mess with the destruction of Margarito. Why doesn’t Paul Williams show his face and start calling fighters out, instead of saying that nobody wants to fight him. I never hear him call out anybody, never!

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Danny boy, just stick to MMA and stop pretending to be a boxing fan cause you don’t know squat. I am embarrassed for you. Berto lost to Collazo and now he needs the rematch to prove to the world that he is not a dud. But beating Collazo does not make him anything special. Berto knows he is not ready for a Mosley. Why suffer a crucial defeat when you don’t have to. Mosley feels sorry for the boy… and doesn’t want to destroy his dreams.

  • danny says:

a lot of shane morons still prefer to butt-lick the old man.

even berto is not excited in fighting old mosley, berto knows there’s no money in it. wake up, morons.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

I know that Cracker has said it, but it’s 110% true… boxing is about setting up the biggest future matches that will be the best for the sport.

Clottey getting robbed vs. Cotto = setting up Cotto vs Pacquaio

Cotto having no chance of getting a close decision vs Pacquaio = setting up Pacquaio vs Mayweather

Marquez having no chance of getting a close decision vs Mayweather = setting up Pacquaio vs Mayweather

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Let’s just face it, boxing already has it’s eyes set on Pacquaio vs Mayweather and there is nothing that anybody can do to stop it. The only 2 that have an opportunity to ruining this dream is Cotto and Marquez. Both are going to lose against their bouts… let me tell you, they would have to win by knockout cause a decision over Pacquaio and Mayweather, they will never be given. It’s called the “extra bonus check” for the judges!

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

This has already been said by a few here on this posting but let me repeat it for Pavlik-Enemy, Mosley has come to the end of his career. Maybe he has one or two more big fights in him left. Mosley is looking for the biggest money fights that he can get. He has already set his mark on the sport. He beat Oscar De La Hoya in his prime, 2 times! What is he going to get from Derailing a young Berto that might not amount to be great anyway? What is he going to get from beating a Paul Williams that everybody seems to be ducking, yet nobody can find him and doesn’t seem to be too eager about fighting the top welters either.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Yeah, I don’t think that Mosley would take him out in 3 or 4 rounds, but I think that he would beat Pacquaio by a close decision. Let me tell you, in order to knock out Pacquaio in 3 or 4 rounds, you would have to slug it out with him.. I don’t think that would be Mosley’s game plan. Mosley would have to utilize every foot movement he has ever learned in the sport.

  • Gav Bridges says:

Totally neutral, not in the marching band of either fighter, so as I see it, Mosley would KO Pacman inside 3. Sorry, just think Mannys blows would be irritations, and Shane might take four, maybe five minutes to pin him down, then the basic size difference WOULD count. And any second now i expect to be Pac-slapped….

  • Pavlik-enemy#1 says:

I’m sick and tired of Mosley crying out for Pacman. If you’re the great champ let them call you out, where the hell is your pride? Mosley only want a big paycheck thats all, and Arum just dont see him as a big draw. If he really wanted to fight Pacman or Floyd next year, then he need to fight a better man this year. Why not fight Paul William? Alot of boxer afraid of fighting him so beating him will make you the best in your division. That will guaranty Mosley the biggest pay day he always wanted next year. Not because you beat Margarito doest mean your the best, Margarito has been beaten by William and Mosley has been beaten by Cotto, and not because you beat Margarito who beat Cotto that make you better than Cotto, coz in boxing, you need to beat the man to be the man. And beside, he beat Margarito with steroid flowing in his blood, there both members of the cheaters club. Peace!

  • mikey says:

Mosley is after of the money, his time is running out fast,so he wants Pacquiao and have a big pay day.Pacquiao is not scared of Mosley, boxing is business, people tend to down grade Pacquiao because he is not articulate but he is a smart guy career wise,he will not be the lb/lb fighter if he is dumb.

  • Ukansodoff says:

Mosleys win over Margocheato must of put Pacman off, he seems to of refound his hunger, speed, stamina accuracy, infact he looks like Mosley of 10 years ago.

Also Pacman seems unwilling to fight a Welterweight, yeah i know Cotto and Mosley are Welterweights but they wont be at 143 or 144 will they. Welterweight is 147. Would Mosley be willing to drop weight?

What is Mosleys plan these days? Does he wana dominate the division some more or does he want some meaningless but big money fights? If its the 1st then he shouldnt be bothering with Pacquiao anyway.

  • Blade says:

I’m with you on this one quitter.mosely looks totally re juvinated, was clinical against margarito and somethings definately there with pac man,he don’t want the mosely fight at all.Mosely to classy, moves to much and punches to hard for pac man, great fight but mosely would take him out and floyd would beat any of them in 1st gear,he that good, technically and speed wise he untouchable.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

you guys are really making me sick! How in the world is Mosley too old and De La Hoya not? You guys need to think about what you want to say before you actually start typing. Mosley would beat Pacquaio in a great match. Then it would be Mosley versus the Greatness of Mayweather. Either way, either way… Mayweather is the greatest!

  • pinoy power says:

Mosley did agree to go down to whatever weight Pacquaio wanted. Roach believes that Pac-Cotto is the best match up of the 2 possible fights and that’s what we are getting. Mosley is just too old.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Yeah, I thought so. Mosley has so many fights at 147. Why is Mosley too big and Cotto not? They are in the same damn division.

  • Dr. Boxing says:

Excuse the comments of Mosley-Bully, this individual has just recovered from a coma and really has no clue of what has happened in the sport of Boxing for the past few years.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Are you kidding me… are you the only one on this planet that hasn’t watched the Mosley interviews on ESPN. Watch them for yourself. Just go to youtube and get updated. Wow.. you must have just snapped out of a coma. Mosley agreed to every single term that was put on the table and Pacquaio walked away.

  • Mosley-Bully says:

Pacquiao is not scared of Mosley. Roach asked mosley if he is willing to go down to 145 and he said no. Mosley is just to big for pacquiao if he is really that great he should fight paul williams and not chase smaller opponents. Maybe next people will say that pacquiao is scared to fight bernard hopkins wtf.

  • pinoy power says:

Floyd Mayweather is the biggest fraud in boxing history.. that is what he will be remembered for. He might even lose against Marquez. Good luck with that Mayweather. And if he does get lucky and beats Marquez, I highly doubt that he will take a fight with Pacquaio. Mayweather is too concerned about his fraudulent legacy.

  • pinoy power says:

ha ha… keep hoping that the Great Pac is going to lose. Your lousy hope only brings Knockouts by the dozen. Sit back and watch the end of Cotto’s career. This is a career ending type of fight for Miguel. I like Miguel, but he is making a mistake.

  • Pizat says:

dont even matter if manny doesnt wanna fight mosley if hes scared to lose because hes gonna get his as whippped when he fights THE FLOYD MAYWEATHER….sonnnnnn

  • sugar says:

well said owenspud mosley would destroy pac even if he went down to 143. Listen pac retards EASILY, pac doesnt have half the class of the shane of now so imagine if he had fought the lightweight shane wow even more destruction. pac is an overated tramp, everybody with a name he beat he beat them after there primes, barrera, morales, oscar, forget your marquez, and solis and hatton they aint no legends. and never ever is manny pacquio

  • owenspud says:

Pac obsessed fans-grasp reality! Not a “mosley fan”-hey this isn’t football and I’m not a waterboy wannabee like some of you pac freaks! The type of guys Mosley lost to (far taller and slick jabbera) were destined to cause him problems.Think also of De Hoya’s tactics (2)despite the criminal decision.Cotto was at peak and mosley at a crossroads in both weight and direction.Pac’s style is tailor made.Lucky for him Shane not at his peak-late 90s.Boy would Pac be Knocked senseless by a lightweight Sugar.Still too fast, too much power and too much class. One old man Pac doesn’t fancy.nice guy-not good enough tho!B4 u start I’m not partisan, just my view on what I’ve seen

  • UCRAZY says:

I love the mosely cintron match=up. On paper, and at quick glance, it looks like an easy day at the office for Mosley but…Cintron has been improving a lot and looked great against Angulo. He’s big, strong and I think brings a very interesting matchup to the ring for Mosley. I hope it comes together.

  • Duran fan says:

This is why shane is a great fighter. He was willing to take pacmans crappy offer and now is looking for real fights. Shane is a true champ and ALWAYS stepped up to the plate for a challenge. Pacman is no shane for sure.Shane never asked fighters to go down in weight etc.

  • pinoy power says:

Sugar shane is too old for the Great Pac. Pac would break him down and make this great fighter quit on his stool. I like Shane and I don’t want to see him go out like that.

  • The Official Manuel Perez says:

Pacquaio doesn’t have the balls to fight Mosley, even when Mosley agreed to every term that the Pacquiao camp threw at him. Pacquaio is a chicken.

  • danny says:

manny is afraid to lose money when fighting shane, the guy without paying fans.

even if the split is 80/20 in favor of manny, still only pacman’s paying fans will be buying the ppv.

  • BOBBY says:

I rather see mosley vs berto! I think thats an EXTREMELY interesting fight would be good for both side. See if berto is actually good as people think and if mosley still is a contender. Pac will never be a real welterweight weighing in at 147 and being 160 on fight night. So he will never fight real welterweight fights.

  • Batangueño says:

No, Shane, he is not… if you’re willing to drain blood and come down to 143. That’s his criteria, you gotta have one foot in the grave. You gotta be crawling on your belly just to climb atop the ring. Is that too much to ask for? LoL. Afterall, he is the P4P champ, he has the right to demand. ;-)

  • Anthony says:

Mosley Vs Berto!! Unification Bout. I think Mosley would beat him quite comfortabley
