Maccarinelli Not Ready to Retire Yet – News
By Nate Anderson: In spite of the fact that former World Boxing Organization cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (29-4, 22 KO’s) has taken out in three of his last four fights in the past year, he’s not ready to retire yet. Last Saturday night, Maccarinelli was stopped again, this time by Russian Denis Lebedev in a third round TKO at the M.E.N. Arena, in Manchester, England.
After the fight, Maccarinelli said that it was a “possibility” that he would retire. But he may be having second thoughts. If Maccarinelli does continue with his career, he needs to make some serious changes to his career and start looking for another trainer like Emanuel Steward or Freddie Roach.
Those kinds of trainers don’t just take on anyone, though, so it might not be as easy as simply selecting them as if he’s grocery shopping. It seems that for whatever reason, Maccarinelli’s ability to take hard shots has diminished significantly since his 2nd round defeat to David Haye last year in March.
Maccarinelli, instead of taking it easy for awhile and test the waters slowly to see if he wasn’t permanently damaged by the defeat, turned around and stepped into the ring with the hard-hitting Ola Afolabi in March and ended up getting taken out in the 9th round after getting hit with a crushing right hand from Afolabi.
The defeat seemed to have shattered Maccarinelli’s confidence in himself, because he fought like he wasn’t there mentally in the fight against Lebedev on Saturday, throwing only one punch at a time and not throwing combinations like he used to do.
Maccarinelli was beaten up in the first two rounds by Lebedev, who came after Maccarinelli, showing zero respect for the former champion and hitting him with big body shots. In the 3rd round, Lebedev landed a huge left uppercut to the head that sent Maccarinelli retreating backwards badly hurt.
For the next half minute, Lebedev battered Maccarinelli around the ring, shutting his right eye, cutting him over the eye and bloodying his nose before the referee stepped in and stopped the fight with Maccarinelli sustaining punishment against the ropes. It was only a matter of time before Lebedev put Maccarinelli down in the round and it’s a good thing that he stepped in and stopped the fight when he did.
There’s a lot of things that Maccarinelli will have to do if he wants to continue his career and be successfully. Beyond getting a new trainer, Maccarinelli needs to take it easy for awhile, and take six to eight months off away from boxing to let his head recover from the three knockout losses in the past year. Apart from that, Enzo needs to stick to fighting light-hitting fighters for a year or so and work on using his reach, putting his punches together and learning to move more laterally.
Maccarinelli is too stationary for his own good and needs to learn to move more and use his jab. Against Lebedev, Maccarinelli rarely threw jabs in the fight, which was incredible considering that he had a significant height and reach advantage against the 5’10” Lebedev. At 6’4”, Maccarinelli should have been able to jab from a distance and control Lebedev.
Instead, however, Maccarinelli failed to use his height and reach and let the Russian fighter crowd him and land his shorter punches. It seems that Maccarinelli fights like someone much shorter than his height and is going to have to unlearn that if he decides to continue with his career.

enzo got nothing left he might win a fight nexy but he will get battered in the next 3 so enzo you should retire im saying this in a good way because if i was you i would retire but its up to u r u doing it for money or respect
Enzo 8 month of stay super fit then start hard sparring in usa the only way mate.
Enzo can still bang… but has lost his confidence and mental edge he looks stone cold frightened of getting into a good tear up as he thinks he’ll go down or get stopped, towards the end of the lebvedev bout he looked shot with nothing left.
Ben you made a good point he cant quite figure out what to throw effectively and when to do it any more, and if you cant do that, or your trainer cant get it through your skull your done. Then you start doubting yourself and not concentrating which leaves you open in fights.. can you see the picture guys? He’s lost it mentally.
As mentioned unless he can stump up the cash to pay a manny Steward or freddie roach, or somewhere there is a mastermind tactician out there willing to sort him out he’ll continue getting bashed up by any decent banger he faces.
Haye wasnt lying when he said before there fight that it would either make or break one of them and we all know who it shattered dont we?!
needs to retire asap, after deavid haye bounced his brain around his head he cant even get jabbed without falling round the ring.
enzo do yourself a favour go back to shaggin sheep with joe and co you might get a kick in the nads but you wont get knocked out again……have it
Quit boxing before you get hurt I say….
28…plenty of time to turn it round.
Manny Steward could be the answer…. but would he take him on?
Why is it that Brits build their guys up just to tear them down? If they’re not a world class elite they should retire. Does the truth hurt so much…no wonder Scott Gilfoid loves having a go at Brit boxers.
After what David Haye did Macca will never have been the same. HE was a good champion, but never in the elite. Time to retire Enzo, but hold your head up high, impressive boxer but he just doesn’t have it anymore
He took a risk in this fight with Lebedev and fell flat on his face. Having seen his old fights, he should have fared better. Seems Haye more than just made him eat leather and kiss canvas. He needs a new trainer to bring him back to the way he used to be or better. I’m glad retirement is out of the question.
he needs to get a decent trainer behind him full stop thats what is doing him help him get his confidence back again and maybe hel get world tite level again if not then time to retire else he keep gettin beatings
It’s all about defense!! If you dont get hit you don’t get stopped. He just stood infront of the guy, where was the grabbing, the holding the survival.
He should not have lost against obi flabby or what ever his name was. he gave him that fight.
yeah he is looking so edgy and nervous not aggressive and confident like before, very negative body language in the ring in his fights since haye.
Lets face it… he might have come back with a shaved head and a unshaved face to make him look like a different tougher person…
But david haye destroyed this guy.
Anyone saying maybe he wasnt good in the first place has not seen his old fights. He was a totally different fighter before the haye fight.
I guess this goes to show how important the mental side of boxing really is. Theres no point having all the tools if your brain cant decide what to use and when.
Macc needs to start beleiving in himself again if he is to get any where near winning a world title again, at 28 he should be in his prime, using his combinations that he was using 18 months to two years ago are the key and recovering mentally from the ko’s he has suffered,
