Juan Manuel Marquez awarded!

marquez33445By Pedro Reyna: A sports award event took place today and was aired on the spanish channel, Univision. The event was sponsored by Tecate and Univision. In the house, Oscar De La Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez, and Roberto Duran were all present. Julio Cesar Chavez received a legendary award, while Roberto Duran received a similar award that was titled differently. Despite the big names, the night belonged to Juan Manuel Marquez.

Juan Manuel Marquez was awarded for Hispanic Boxer of the Year and Best Hispanic Athlete of the Year. The other nominees for Boxer of the Year were Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, Juan Manuel Lopez, Chris Arreola and Victor Ortiz. The nominees for Athlete of the Year were Carmelo Anthony, Cuahtemoc Blanco, Tony Gonzalez, Rafael Nadal, Guillermo Ochoa, Lorena Ochoa and Francisco Rodriguez.

It wasn’t much of a shocker to see Marquez receive both awards. However, did were these awards a tactic by De La Hoya (who was sitting in the front row and has major ties to the network Univision) to promote Marquez as a boxing superstar and assist sales for the Mayweather-Marquez fight or did Marquez truly deserve these awards or are both of these explanations reasonable?

Let me break down both of the awards. Compared to the other nominees for Boxer of the Year, Marquez did have the most impressive year. Chavez Jr certainly did not deserve the award after fighting D- fighters is entire career. Juan Manuel Lopez was very sharp and a strong nominee, although, Lopez has not fought the best of the division as Marquez did at lightweight versus Juan Diaz and Joel Casamayor. Chris Arreola, very much like Lopez, did not face the best opposition in the division. The last nominee is Victor Ortiz… mmm… must I say more? Therefore, it is logical and reasonable that Marquez deserved this award.

Athlete of the Year included several nominees that were worthy of the award. Carmelo Anthony had an excellent year, in which, he led the Denver Nuggets to the Western Conference Finals in the NBA. Anthony needed the rest of his teammates tonight as he did this past season. Cuahtemoc Blanco, had a fascinating season with Chicago Fire, a Major League Soccer team. Though, he did not have a “Best Athlete” type of season. Tony Gonzalez is one of the best tight ends In the NFL, however, his Kansas City Chiefs were 2-14 last season. Tony may have a better chance of winning this award next year, as he has been traded to the Atlanta Falcons (a better team than the Chiefs). Guillermo Ochoa, Lorena Ochoa and Francisco Rodriguez are good athletes but needed a more impressive overall performance for the year. Rafael Nadal may have been the nominee who truly deserved the award for the Athlete of the Year. Nadal had an extraordinary year by defeating Roger Federer three times in one year (Federer is called by many, the best Tennis player ever). Tennis is not popular among Hispanics, therefore, Nadal is not nearly popular as Marquez.

The impact of these awards may not be as great as Golden Boy has planned because the majority of the audience were Hispanics. Hispanics already believe in Juan Manuel Marquez in his upcoming fight versus Mayweather. It is the rest of the world that does not believe in Marquez. Hispanics already have the PPV purchased and their tickets bought. It is the rest of the world that doesn’t want to fork out the cash. Either way, Marquez had an excellent year with a couple of superb performances against Casamayor and Diaz. The night belonged to Marquez and much appreciation was displayed from Marquez to the fans and the sport of boxing. The man deserves the awards, as boxing deserves warriors like Marquez.

One Hitter Quitter, you may intimidate the Dude but not real fans who have folowed boxing. Please take a look at his last few fights and tell me if Floyd has fought the toughest available fighter.
Forget about the fact that he has conveniently accepted the easiest of challenges. I have seen Floyd on TN and the interviewer asked him about Cotto, Mosley, Margarito or other formidable and hungry guys. His answer always is that he picks who he wants and that he only picks big $ fights.

Here are his last fights. Hatton, a 140lber who himself said the 140lbers were too strong and went back to 140. Oscar, who actually came down to meet him. Baldomir who is a ourney man at best and who surprised Judah. Judh who already had lost to journeyman Baldomir. Sharmba Mitchell, a blown up and old journeyman lightweight.
Gatti, a guy whose face never saw a punch it did not want to test. A guy who is slower than Heinz Ketchup and who already was shot. Did I mention Henry Bruseles and Demarcus Corley? What about Philip Ndou? The last three are not household names even in their own household. No one would know them even with an American Express Card. If I could pick up a big, easy payday, why fight a live body who can fight back?
Cotto, Mosley and Margarito have been calling out Floyd in magazines and in fight interviews for the past few years. But wait, as soon as Marquez calls his name he rushes to sign that contract. Why? Cuz Marquez is a name but alias one that was made maxing out at 130 for years and now an aging fighter. Of course Flod would take that fight.

Why do you think he retired? To avoid having to face the top guys. Atter he wipes the floor with Marquez, he will look around for more scraps, i.e. old, shot fighters. If he can’t find one he will go to the WWE and get another “fixed” win. Note he called out a few MMAfighters and once they accepted, he quickly ate his words.
Read it here, Floyd is one of the most talented fighters in the world but he does not have the balls to face the names I already mentioned. Sure he will get angry when people say this but with no balls he won’t fight them.
Heard of thewar vet who lost his balls in Iran. He was also allergic to coffee. He got a nice job at the post office & was told everyone start at 7 but he would start at 9. When he asked why he was told for the 1st 2 hrs everyone drank coffee and scratched their nuts. Since he had none he could come in 2 hrs later. That’s like Floyd, he has no balls eiter and can come in later.

    Hey Devin the Dude,

Tell me what Post Fight interview Sugar Shane has called out Mayweather on the National spotlight when millions of fans were watching…. and….. make sure that Mayweather was not already in a fight contract with somebody else. Take the necessary time you need and let me know. Don’t even post anything else if you’re going to ignore this question.

  • the dude says:

Mosley wanted Mayweather, I believe the entire planet hasn’t seen that fight yet. Care to elaborate? Is it because Mosley won’t bring in the audience or is it that Money doesn’t have the testicaular fortitude to face up to Sugar Shane?

“Fought everyone who called him out”?! Man, that’s some strong dope you’re on.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Who has called out Floyd Mayweather Jr. on the spotlight when they had the opportunity! Who? Go ahead and watch millions of post fight interviews. Fighters usually weigth to call out Floyd when he is already in a fight contract. Where are those same fighters after the fight? The are mute and hiding in the closets.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

I don’t think you have been watching boxing long enough to know anything about Mayweather. Mayweather fights those who call him out. He has been doing it his whole career. And don’t be waiting for him to be into a fight contract and then start calling him out cause thats what most fighters do. They know he is already in a fight contract and they call my man out. Genaro “chicanito” Hernandez (38-1) got busted up. Angel Manfredy (25-2) called Floyd out and got him, yeah he got it in 2 rounds. Another fighter that dedicated his early career to call out Floyd is (RIP) Diego Corrales (33-0), sorry to say but we all know what he got. Castillo, Sosa, N’dou, Corley, Gatti, Mitchell, Judah. Then De La Hoya and finally broke down Hatton and left him broken-hearted for Pacquaio.

  • BlackLegend says:

Another thing Hitter, I’m a black guy so don’t make comments about my username.

  • BlackLegend says:

Hitter, I have a job to do so I can’t argue with the crud you spew all the time, So I’ll keep this short.

Mayweather is a great boxer, I’ll give you that, one of best technaical boxers around. But until he fights someone of equal height, skill, or any of the top boxers who kept calling him out besides Marquez, I will not, I repeat, WILL NOT put him above or anywhere near the greats.

One more thing, if you pull the dumb excuse about Mayweathers record, you should just stop posting.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Where is the Black Legend that knows so much about boxing? Logged off cause of fear of the Hitter! I will school you in boxing 101… just like Mayweather is going to school Marquez.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

You smuck? You are not Black and fo sure not a Legend. What do you know about Ali? Ali is over-hyped and just remembered cause of his quotes. All he done was run his mouth and run around in the ring. The man ran from his country like a coward! Like I said… Cassius Clay has nothing on Floyd Mayweather Jr.

  • El_Cuadrilatero_Boxing says:

This One Hitter Quitter individual is a real comedian! As a matter of fact I do believe that Marquez is going to beat Mayweather. It might come as a shocker to you, because you know nothing of boxing.

  • BlackLegend says:

One Hitter Quitter, I was going to type out a long response to your “Ali has nothing on Mayweather” comment. But I decided not to becuase it was so stupid.

Go sit in the Time-out corner and don’tuntil you learn what Greatness actually means you smuck.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Although I do agree with you about these other cats calling Khan, the greatness. Amir hasn’t fought anybody to even be classified “Good”. He has much much to prove and it won’t be done in his next fight nor the next. Greatness is a lifetime achievement. Khan and Greatness do not belong in the same sentence, besides this one.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Hey Quadri Lattero, you must be crazy to believe that Marquez has a slight chance to beat Money. Mayweather is the greatest boxer of all time! Ali has nothing on Mayweather! Mayweather will embarrass and retire any fighter from lightweight to super middleweight. The sooner you realize that, the better fan you will become!

  • El_Cuadrilatero_Boxing says:

Marquez is a great fighter, any real boxing follower can acknowledge that. However, in the previous article, all of these so called experts are calling Amir Khan a great fighter, one of the best! What a shame! This is why the sport of boxing is disappearing because the fans lack knowledge. You think that Mayweather was really injured? Yeah right, he realized that he is up against a great fighter and simply needed more time to train and prepare.

  • El_Cuadrilatero_Boxing says:

So what did Marquez have to say about the postponement?

  • mario says:

yea i was there the tecate sports award i even got to meet marquez and drink a beer with him

  • Cracker A$$ Cracker says:

Zada stay off the crack! Can’t understand what the heck you are typing.

  • zada says:

what can I said if everything has been talk this is about boxing skills but names

  • Cracker A$$ Cracker says:

All of these crackers that are so called boxing fans and experts are talking about Khan’t! That character has much to prove in the ring! The man who they should all be talking about is Marquez! If I was Mexican, he would be my main cowboy! The Pretty Boy dummy needed more time to train because he knows he is in with a great fighter. He was never injured all along!

  • El_Cuadrilatero_Boxing says:

The author could not be more correct that Marquez truly deserved the awards. Not one of the other candidates are more worthy in this case than Marquez. Were there any other hispanic fighters that were not nominated that could have earned this award? Israel Vazquez certainly had 2 big wins versus Rafael Marquez. Maybe it was well planned out by De La Hoya to promote the stardom of Marquez, but there’s not much more you can do to make people believe in Marquez.

  • P Smith says:

Those awards were given to Marquez to better promote the upcoming fight. It seems like GBP are doing everything they can to boost their sales.

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

Marquez has no chance of beating my man Money! The Greatness will be displayed on September 18th! Make sure you set your DVR, because it will be the Greatest Show on Earth!

  • Cracker A$$ Cracker says:

Hey partner, somebody deleted my comment on this topic. They must not like to hear the truth.
I remember watching the Castillo vs Mayweather fight. I remember Castillo’s relentless body attack on Mayweather and Jr running for his life in every round. I remember having Castillo winning on my scorecard. I do not remember the judges’ scorecards because I don’t care what they think. Marquez is the most smartest boxer in the sport right now. He is going to do what Castillo did. The world needs to buckle up because Marquez is going to pull of the upset of the year.

  • El_Cuadrilatero_Boxing says:

I never thought I would say this, but I actually agree with that Cracker individual. I agree that Jose Luis Castillo was robbed the decision versus Mayweather. Castillo did an excellent job of focusing on body shots, which Mayweather did not enjoy at all. I see Marquez using a similar plan, though, Marquez is a much smarter and faster boxer than Castillo. I hear alot of complaints regarding weight difference, however, that won’t be the case. Mayweather is not a big welterweight. Marquez seems to still be under-rated by most of the boxing world. They base their predictions on names. But there is much more to Marquez-Mayweather than just names.
