I’m Stripping Pacquiao of his Pound for Pound Spot

pac453427By Liam Santiago: Recently, I posted an article on boxingnews24′s new pound for pound rankings. I placed Manny Pacquiao at number one which, looking at the whole picture, I feel I might have been wrong to do. So, I am stripping Pacquiao of this number one spot, for now. I will watch the Cotto fight and make a decision. If he beats Cotto comfortably and I feel the weight drop for Cotto has played no part, I will put him back at no.1, bow down and apologize.

However, for now, Juan Manuel Marquez takes the top spot and Bernard Hopkins follows him to number 2. Pac-Man now stands at no.3.

Ok. I am expecting some seriously abusive comments for this. But, let me explain. The two fight Pacquiao had with Marquez were very close and many boxing experts, such as myself, saw Marquez as the winner. Marquez recently destroyed Diaz in the 9th round of an all out war. I don’t feel the De La Hoya victory for Pacquiao helps his claim for my top spot what so ever. De La Hoya was dead at the weight and Pac might as well have been punching a punchbag in that ring. However, I have to give him credit for beating Hatton. Although at the end of his career and he was over trained and mentally weakened by trainer, Floyd Mayweather Snr. Hatton was in no state to fight that night. Who knows, if he was better mentally prepared he may well have knocked Pacquiao out early on in the fight.

I simply don’t see Pacquiao as great as others do. I know I am not alone in thinking this. Not all that long ago Joe Calzaghe claimed Pacquiao was not that great, also ‘he’s lost 3 fights and drawn a couple, which matters alot’.

I just don’t see that Pacquiao has done quite enough to deserve that top spot where Marquez has. Bernard Hopkins beats Pacquiao to no.2 because the man is simply untouchable. Schooling Kelly Pavlik at the age of 44. Wow. Pacquiao is 30 and plans to retire soon, Hopkins 14 years his senior and still demolishing anyone in his way. Hopkins looks set for a fight with undefeated Chad Dawson if he beats Johnson, which I see Hopkins winning easy.

So this is how Boxingnews24′s rankings stand now:

1.JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ
lightweight
2.BERNARD HOPKINS
light heavyweight
3.MANNY PACQUIAO
catchweight fighter
4.MIGUEL COTTO
welterweight
5.SHANE MOSLEY
welterweight
6.CHAD DAWSON
light heavyweight
7.NONITO DONAIRE
flyweight
8.PAUL WILLIAMS
light middleweight
9.VITALI KLITSCHKO
heavyweight
10.KELLY PAVLIK
middleweight

As many boxing fans may have heard Paul Williams and Kelly Pavlik look set to square up in their next fight. Bernard Hopkins might soon fight Chad Dawson. Miguel Cotto boils down to fight Manny Pacquiao. So three fight where both fighters are in the rankings. Should be interesting.

SORRY I WAS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH MY COMPUTER EARLIER. PLEASE LET ME RESEND MY ARTICLE TO LIAM:
Liam, this is beginning to sound like a stuck record. As a so called boxing expert and writer, how many fights have you seen where a fighter fought the wrong strategy? How many have you seen where a fighter might have been injured or had the flu or was clearly past his best, over his optimum weight or whatever else problem possible?

I am sure there are many but we base our opinion on what happened in the ring not outside of it. If a fighter claimed he was not 100% we say he was a crybaby. Holmes beat Norton with one arm. The great ones seize the opportunity when they get it and wory about the handicaps later.

But you, The Great Adjudicator that you are, have deemed it within your omnipotent right to decide what decisions should be accepted. No, on a whim you change your mind like a God playing with us. Can you imagine if the supreme court worked like that. They make a decision but after sleeping it over without the facts having changed, reverse their decision?
I think you have an unterior motive to get Floyd, your favourite to No 1. He will beat Marquez and you will say, he beat No 1 so he is now No 1. But if I use your logic, after sleeping on it, Floyd should not be recognized cuz he beat a smaller & older man who was fighting at a weight that made him slow and ineffective.
Puhleeezzzzzzee. No more of your specious logic. The Ring Magazine and other major sports mags all rate Pac as No 1 and no matter what you say, when a fight is being intoduced, they cite the Ring’s Rating, not yours or mine.
If the Supreme Court makes a decision, they can’t change it. I believe only the president under certain situations can. A higher court can over Using law as a precedent, if you wish to make a change the facts must have changed and/or be presented in a trial.
In boxing parlance, there has not been a recent fight to change the picture. You are not God and you are not the president. I am guesing you are not a woman either. If you admit that, then you are allowed to change your mind any time. Like I said before, women have the puss and can change the rules anytime.
So unless you come clean and admit to one of the situations Ihave outlined above, you can’t just arbitrarily change the rankings as you wish.
No what? Go ahead and change them as you please. I think this shows you are campaigning to be a president, not of the US, but of one of the useless world sanctioning bodies. They act like pussies and change rules like pussies to suit what they want. You fit that bill!

    What do you think?

  • Wayne Lord says:

I’ve got your back Without Warning! A loss is a learning experience if the fighter learns from it. Boom Boom Mancini learned from his loss to Arguello. Louis learned from his to Schmeling and the list goes on. Great fighters dare to take risk to be greater and may lose but they are the better for it.
So Joe Calzaghe, go fight an old not so Super now Jones or Mr Clutch, feint, paw, grab Hopkins and retire. I think you are great but like Floyd, if you had taken the very toughest fights in your prime, yourlegacy as an alltime great would have been unquestionable.
Either come back and be fodder for the young guns or upset them like Mr Clutch & Grab by whatever means you can. Or better still, keep your effing mouth shut so I do not lose respet for you.

  • Without Warning says:

“I simply don’t see Pacquiao as great as others do. I know I am not alone in thinking this. Not all that long ago Joe Calzaghe claimed Pacquiao was not that great, also ‘he’s lost 3 fights and drawn a couple, which matters alot’.”

Lost 3 fights matters a lot? Ehem… Sugar Ray Leonard also lost 3 times… Joe Louis lost 3 times… Muhammad Ali lost 5 times… Roberto Duran lost 16 times… Henry Armstrong lost 21 times… Sugar Ray Robinson lost 19 times…

So Mr. Boxing Expert, what the hell are you trying to say other than bull-manure?

    “3.MANNY PACQUIAO
    catchweight fighter”

Really…when has Manny Pacquiao fought at a catchweight, other than the dela Hoya one (if you could consider that a “catchweight” fight even), which dela Hoya himself set?

The Cotto fight at 145 lbs did not happen while I, or anyone else, wasn’t looking, did it? (Not to mention that if it’s a title fight, it will happen at the 147 limit. Pacquiao will lose, but that’s another matter.)

At the very least, you should have designated JMM as a “catchweight fighter,” too, Sir. Even if that fight hasn’t happened yet, either…

  • Witness says:

I can’t help but wonder what Liam Santiago & Manuela Perez would be saying if JMM knocked down PAC 4 times then won. Would they argue that PAC should have won instead? I think we all know the answer to that question. I know a lot of Mexicans who are PAC fans. Then there are the MexiCANT’S like liam & manuela – that is, CAN’T write objectively, CAN’T accept the truth, and CAN’T give a humble little Filipino guy the credit that he truly deserves. Throughout his career PAC has faced bigger & supposedly better opponents who end up getting blindsided by PAC’s speed & heart.

  • Liam Santiago says:

Mayweather is not on the list.

  • scorpio says:

This writter is funny I think is better is the list goes like this:
    P4P:
1.Juan Manuel Marquez ( why not hes mexican he will be destroid by maywhether but what the hell hes Mexican that what it counts right)
2.Julio Cesar Chavez Jr ( his undefeted and hes mexican)
3.Antonio Margarito( his mexican don’t care about if he cheated or not he still mexican he deserve to be here)
4.Israel Vazquez( he have’t fight in a year but he is Mexican)
5.Marquez ( he lost t Israel but he is Mexican)
    6. Omar Chavez( he havent fight nobody but he still mexican and the other son of JCC)
    7. Oscar de la Hoya ( He lost agains Paquiao and Maywether and retired. He deserved to be in the P4P list because he is Mexican).
8.Hugo Cazeres- He lost to Ivan Calderon but his Mexican.
9.Ponce de leon- He was nokout in a minute 30 of the first round by Juanma Lopez but he is Mexican and deserved to be in the P4P great in the world.
10.Julio Cesar Chavez SR.- He has been retired for over a decade but he is Mexican and have fight more than 100 times he deserve to be in the p4p best in the world.
    Thats the real p4p list.
Do anybody cares what this guy thinks?
Why Wladimir Klitschko is on the list? dont know and don’t care?
The real list should go like this:
    1.MANNY PACQUIAO
    2.Floyd Mayweather
    3.Juan Manuel Marquez
    4.Bernard Hopkings
    5.Miguel Cotto
    6.Paul Williams
    7.Shane Mosley
    8.Ivan Calderon
    9.Chad Dawson
    10.NONITO DONAIRE

Ps. This is for Liam Santiago When U make a imparcial like that U r going to be a great writer.

  • nepster says:

Too many what if’s when you’re talking about the Pacquaio-Hatton fight and I know you’re not rating JMM’s victory over 37 year old Casamayor and Pillow Hands Diaz over recognized best of the Light Welterweight Division Hatton.

  • Andy C says:

Pac beat Marquez once and drew the second time.
You are a joke or a writer and a your P4P list is a total farce.

What the hell has Marquez done? He was beaten by Chris John F*r F*CKS SAKE!!! He was KNOCKED all over the ring by Pac.

In the first fight which was a draw one of the judges miscored the first round as 10-7. It should have been 10-6 as there were 3 knockdowns. Pac would have won the first fight to if the scored had been correct.

Hatton was a genuine win, he was the linear champion at 140 AND UNBEATEN AT 140. DLH was also a good win, it’s not Pac’s fault DLH lost TOO much weight.

I think you should stop writing. It’s for the best all round.

if the boxing world confers the P4P to Pacquiao, could one lousy boxing analyst to change it?

When you confer the P4P title, you have to consider the ” annihilating power ” of such fighter. Besides, who as won all 4 fights in 4 different divisions consecutively, in a span of 16 months ?

Doesn’t pound-for-pound connote skill and power regardless of weight class ? Well, I got news for you Pacquiao did prove it in 4 different weight classes against stellar opposition between Mar 2008 and May 2009.

The writer of this column isn’t fit to be a boxing analyst.

Diaz was shot before losing to Marquez. Diaz already lost to Campbell who is a B fighter at best! And it was a competitive fight with Diaz winning the first 4 rounds before Marquez’ boring running/counter punching style caught up with Diaz. No way Marquez number 1 pound for pound. He’s only as high as number 2 because his fights were so close with Pacquiao over four fights ago. Pacquiao only got better and more popular. Marquez only got older and more bitter. Stop propping up crybaby Manny-wannabe Marquez, He doesn’t even compare to the true Mexican greats in Barrera and Morales, classy inside and outside the ring. Shut your trap and never blog again!

Calm down guys, take it easy. If I am to make one change it will be adding Tim Bradley. If I make another it will be to add Calderon. But who to take out. The bottom two obviously, Vitali and Pavlik. I’ll see how Pavlik does in his next fight. And I’ll check WHO Vitali fights next. If it isn’t anyone worthy, ill replace him with Bradley. Sound fair enough?

manny pacquiao is like watching a magic show. no matter how much you don’t wanna believe how great that magic was, deep inside you know how impressive it really is.

joe calzaghe also said that “boxing is a dead sport”. but hey, what do i know?

  • fabian says:

Liam is right. Everyone thinks that knock downs in just 2 of 24 rounds wins fights. There is a reason they give champions 12 rounds to win a fight. It cant be won by whats done in 1 or 2 rounds. Lets face it Marquez dominated atleast 20 of those 24 rounds. This is what makes Marquez the best. as far as Hatton Pac-man beat him fair and square. No excuses Im sure that Hatton came in as prepared as he ever has. But lets face it Hatton isnt anything compared to Marquez. Juan Diaz Would beat up Hatton.

  • liboraci says:

i guess ur entitled to ur pinion Liam…just hope ur motivation for saying so is not bec. of the ff:

    1. Ur just another Pac-hater like Manuela “i-used-to-respect-pacquaio” Perez masquerading as an objective writer.

    2. Ur trying to emulate the Manuela Perez modus operandi of writing anti-Pacquaio articles with cheesy titles just to get the most number of hits from Pac-fans who will surely give their comment.

    3. U just let all those comments from Pacman fans got into ur skin and u just want to get even.

If thats the case well great job convincing me in ur previous article of being unbiased.

  • LetCross says:

    Hey Liam,

I respect your opinion aboout P4P rankings. However, I beg to disagree about how you look down Pacman’s defeated opponents. Have you ever looked into Marquez opponents as well?

Why let the victor fighter suffer the shortcomings of their conquered opponents? It’s not as if they were informed one month before going up to the ring. They trained for the same period of time. De la Hoya was proclaiming he was in the best shape of his life during camp, took some great trainers around, advisers and more. If he was drained, fault it to Pacquaio?

Excuses is what you have. You make all the excuses just to support your claim. Be sound and reasonable. Don’t make your readers dumb with partial analysis.

Obviously, you dont give Pacquiao credit on his win over Marquez. Truth of the matter is, it could have gone either way. But we all know, when fights are that close, you cant discount who got more power. And guess what, your man visited the mat once again. Tell him next time around, try being on his feet the whole time and win should he convincingly.

Ok Cotto its a guy without fear he fight everybody everywhere without any question, he never put obstacles to makes the things more dificult or say things like mayweather said for example, Cotto its not a good money fight and he knows thats not true. i need objectively people to write articles for my web page, when its done in english and if you know spanish will be in contact.

So, that’s the comparison. And JMM was a crybaby. And because one of the giant network here in the philippines is pushing JMM to fight Pacquiao again because they are more attracted to Golden Boy.Maybe, they will get a commission.

I didn’t read the article, but since you said so…I totally agree. I totally agree that you are an idiot. Now, I’m stripping Manuela of his “P4P retard spot”…congrats you are the new “P4P retard”.

  • Randy says:

    @B-James

Are you stupid? Eric Morales didn’t have to take the fight. You know?–Pacquiao didn’t have to take the fight with Marquez the second time because Pacquiao was also battling the scales. He rehydrated 16lbs after the weighins in the second fight!! And for the record, Pacquiao looked drained in the weigh-ins. Now, if that doesn’t scream dehydrated I don’t know what does. And if you didn’t know Roach was planning to go up in weight prior to Marquez but wanted to give Marquez a shot.

People can say what they want about Pacquiao–but stop making excuses for his opponents.

  • Witness says:

Liam’s world where Pacquiao is not considered #1 p4p include PAChaters who are either jealous or have been beaten by Manny. Oh of course some fans of these beaten fighters.
The rest of the world serves as witness to the greatness that is Manny Pacquiao.
Lastly, I am soo friggin tired of people saying JMM defeated Pac! Count-not 1,not 2,not 3, but 4!!! 4 times JMM kissed the canvas from Pac straight left! Question for u boys & girls- how many times did JMM knock down Pac?!? A-HA! That’s what I thought! Enuff already!

  • Liam Santiago says:

AO. Thats a good list. But Floyd has to fight 1st. Officially, hes still retired. Kesler, pretty much same with him. Since losing to Joe, whats he done?

  • Randy says:

Dude. That’s no excuse for Hatton losing–honestly. Pacquiao beat fairly him whether you would like to give him full credit or not by saying about Mayweather Sr and his training.

  • B-James says:

Erik Morales, Marco Antonio Barrera, Oscar De La Hoya – Past their primes
Morales had problems with the scale.

    Lost to Marquez TWICE.

    Hatton was overrated.

    Diaz was a punching bag.

    IS PACQUIAO OVERRATED OR WHAT???

  • Trevor says:

Yah you’re right he is # 1 – the pacman., he will be in the history….

  • angela says:

Pacquiao is no.1, I am canadian not a filipino, but lets face it he is the best boxer in the world, although most of the filipino are crazy because of thier very corrupt government. The reality is Pacman is #1..My idol…

  • flem1 says:

    LOL!

Not one mention of Pac’s KO over Hatton.

    Stop writing you dumb blogger.

  • challlo says:

you are not in you mind,

  • Chacaroy says:

    You are nobody.

  • AO says:

Why does Bernard still get to even be on the list? I move that if Bernard Hopkins gets to be on the list so should Floyd

So here’s my top ten Pound 4 Pound:

    1. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

    2. Manny Pacquiao

    3. Paul Williams

    4. Juan Manuel Marquez

    5. Miguel Cotto

    6. Wladimir Klitschko

    7. Shane Mosley

    8. Mikkel Kessler

    9. Chad Dawson

    10. Timothy Bradley

  • palerider says:

Liam said he’s stripping. the sentence stops right there!

  • p4p Khan says:

How can Pacquiao not be number 1, whether you think Pacquiao beat him or not , his other preformances have been better than marquez in the sense that they have been harder and bigger fights i belive, hopkins does not derserve to be there yes he beat pavlik great preformance but he lost to calzaghe, i would have him a number 3 , i totally agree with cotto at four , i prefer him to mosley there, however i would have calderon instead of vitali
