I’m Really Disappointed in Pacquiao

By Manuel Perez: I’m really disappointed in Manny Pacquiao because he’s insisting on a fight against World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Miguel Cotto, who many boxing fans see as not the same fighter after losing by a 11th round knockout to Antonio Margarito last year in July 2008, to come in at 142 or 143. I’m thinking Pacquiao is afraid to fight a top welterweight without them coming in at one of Pacquiao’s energy draining catch weights. I don’t why Pacquiao can’t man up and fight Cotto – or whoever – at their weight class rather than making them strip off weight to fight.

That to me seems silly for the fight to be held at a catch weight. Look, if Pacquiao can’t fight Cotto at 147, then so be it. Stay at 140 and fight the best fighters at that weight class like Marcos Maidana, Juan Manuel Marquez, Timothy Bradley or Nate Campbell, but don’t ask a fighter like Cotto to have to squeeze down to some god awful catch weight and thus leaving him weaker. That seems unfair if you ask me.

I see it as something that taints the fight, because Pacquiao should be able to fight Cotto without a catch weight involved.

if i am a boxer there is no way mr. perez can be my manager. he is maybe so stupid to be one. imagine letting his fighter fight a too much bigger guy just to prove that he is good. how stupid and irresponsible he is. mr. perez,as a boxing writer, should have known that even how good your fighter is – you can not just let him fight without lookng for somekind of fairness. catch weight is one and the best way of levelling the playng field. to suggest the otherwise is stupidity.

  • scorpio says:

Cotto beat Mosley and beat the guy that beat williams Quintana so why he is not the best welter in the world Can U tell me? o yes is because he is puertorican not american right.

  • carl says:

i agree to mr. spoon, at 144-145 weight is fair for both fighter pacman and cotto, because pacman optimize 140 while cotto is 147 so as a fair to them, let us meet them in center point from their regular weight into 144…not bad for both fighters..

  • Bugok Kha says:

p.s. ask for some help to the boxing promoters you don’t know maybe someday you will be the BEST POUND FOR POUND KING IN THE WHOLE WORLD! promise i’ll be your number one avid fan and mind you “I WILL NOT GET DISAPPOINTED WITH YOU” bye! smile

  • Batangueño says:

RealBox: I read and understood your post quite alright, pal, my reply was more for his fans who don’t know s#!t if they got splattered on the face.

  • rhomivan says:

just one thing, guys, pacquiao himself has never ever said that he is the best. all the accolades given him are from respected and highly-regarded boxing scribes. the man is so humble he is always saying that he fights to make people happy. don’t put words into his mouth. only us fans argue whether he is p4p or not. he has never insisted on record that he is the best. if all this talk and arguments about him continue, don’t you all think that maybe he is indeed great? have you ever had this much talk about the jmm-mayweather fight? he is the hottest item in boxing and that is not because of what he says but because of the passions he evokes within all of us. and because of that, he ranks among those boxing great who comes once in a while– those whose mere presence on and off the ring creates magic that we cannot help ourselves but talk about him whether in a good or bad manner.

  • Batangueño says:

what are y’all arguing about? this is the bottomline, plain and simple: pacquiao is chicken $#!t. he won’t fight cotto unless cotto is half-dead at the scale. what else is there to talk about? rationalize all you want, you rabbit-brained pacnuthuggers, your idol is chicken $#!t.

to RealBox: oh, yeah, he is a national hero, alright. but what does that say about the nation though? pfffttt!

  • Wayne Lord says:

First let me say i will ignore Perez and write about something, anything else. he is creating hits by writing about Manny and we all get upset and write like crazy. He responds by writing yet another article saying the same thing.
We again react by writing the same thing. This is like a baseline tennis match. Somebody has to go to the net hit some top spin change the pace. If not it is deja vu all over again to quote Yogi Berra. Come on folks, we are never gonna change Perez’z mind and he is never gonna change yours. I do enjoy your comments more than his thogh. Some are so funny!
Now here are my random and wandering thoughts as the old British Monthy Python Movies…..and now for something completely different…..

I think Roy Jones is a fool for wanting to fight either of the Klitckos. I think he is the 2nd best fighter I have ever seen and definitely the fastest hands. He also has tremendous one shot power that is increased exponentially by his hand speed, which sends fighters senseless. Stay with me now, now if he could just hit you know who with one shot……NO! We are not that lucky!
I also think Calzaghe should come back and fight in the Super middle box-off. I think he could win overall but because it is not a single loss and out, he might have his hands full if he meets Abraham in the final.
I would like to see some fan response to the fight, I mean snorefest between the two M’s. The name itself sounds boring. Marquez vs Mayweather. Now let me break that down if anyone is still awake following my boring writing.
Marquez is an honest hardworking fighter. Floyd is a cocky, arrogant egotist. This should be a classic except that Marquez has to make his mark cuez Floyd may fight only if the weather is good!
Now if you have made it to the end of this article, this proves people will read anything. I mean you keep reading….you-know-who!!!!! Now go back to sleep people. In other words, go read some more Perez ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!OOPS I mentioned his name Britney, please don’t sue me!

  • sr71mimidude says:

for information, you got to look at the normal weight of the fighter to understand if its a drain or not, for example im gonna use this fight Cotto vs Paquiao. Paquiao is lighter so going up ist not a big deal is just eating more protein and doing more exercise to get up in weight wile keeping in touch, But for Cotto his normal weight is 160 something, he need to go lighter by eating less and doing exercise, using just the 160 pounds, if cotto fights at a catchweight of 142, he would be loosing nearly 20 pounds, its not healthy for your body when your normal weight is 160 to loss all that weight. Stop sayin that its 4 lbs of diference between 147 to 142, its not about that, its about coming from 160 to 147 or 142.

  • sr71mimidude says:

i read all comments and i laugh a lot, ppl saying that pac man is the best, that hes last 3 fight were awesome bla bla bla bla, th catchweight, they need pacman, pacman dont need them… REMEMBER IT WAS PACMAN WHO CALL COTTO TO FIGHT, IT WASNT COTTO, SO WHO NEEDS WHO?? COTTO DOESNT NEED HIM TO PROVE ANYTHING JUST TO MAKE A LOT OF MONEY, COTTO IS AN ELITE WELTER. so dont write and fight here using your opinions, use facts, they support your comments. Theres ppl saying that Pacman need to fight Mosley and Williams to prove something at welter, but Mosley got outboxed by cotto, williams got out-boxed by Carlos quintana (he avenged that loss with a ko, but still lost to Quintana) Quintana was KO and out-boxed by cotto so stop saying that mosley and williams are the best welter because the facts doenst support YOUR opinion.

  • azzWhooper says:

WOW! ok first of all the only catch weight Pacquiao fought was with DLH. And man com’on, are you suggesting Pacquiao should’ve fought DLH at 154lbs? Oh great, “I’m Really Disappointed in Pacquiao” statement is a lie coming from you. Clearly you pretend to be “disappointed” when the facts you are stating is clear as day that all bouts were fair. You are not disappointed cause you don’t like him in the first place. Good article for displaying your dislike in him

  • T.Weis says:

Every time this guy writes it’s like Euthanasia.

Manny Pacquiao’s demolition of DLH doesn’t count because DLH was weight drained??? Last time I checked, Pacquiao climbed TWO full weight classes to fight at the WELTERWEIGHT limit of 147. What would you have the man do, fight at 160?!

And if you knew anything about boxing, 144 is still in the welterweight class; maybe Cotto fights best at 147, but Pacquiao fights best at 144. He’s the draw, he’s the star, so he calls the shots.

Pacquiao has fought every great you’ve put in front of him; he destroyed Hatton at HIS NATURAL WEIGHT, an undefeated ring champ–what’s Pacquiao’s excuse there?!

Also, Cotto is a bonafide Welterweight; he owns a UD over Shane Mosley, so why would Manny fight Sugar instead of the man that beat him? If Pacquiao fought Mosley and won, everyone would complain that Sugar is too old and drained and Pac should have fought Cotto, the man that beat him.

If Pacquiao beat Wladamir Kiltchko you would complain about something; do us all a favor and stop writing about the sport we love. Take up UFC and do us all a favor.

  • jason says:

thats right.. only the fans of cotto dis agree of weight hahaha cotto has no problem in reducing,, how if u take over cotto and fight to manny hahahaha.. even increase your weight 157 ,, and im sure in 1 punch is enough to you to sleep like hatton..

  • jason says:

are you all blind? can you measure the size of a man? or may be your all out of school youth…weight it does not a matter, nor bigger size maybe, example: can you imagine six wheeler truck collide with small car.. that will be happen if pacman would agree in 145-147.. all who comments negative to pacman is a brainless man..to have fair fight and advantage of a big man will limit just go down and small go up in the middle so that both fighter is safe.. remember before the fight they have an allowance month to practice, take note this not an quick adjustment of weight,,, so that is only a reason if fighter is losed.. may be in reducing in 1 day will effect but month i dont care..

  • BlackLegend says:

Darren, you see that key on your keyboard called “Caps Lock”?

    Use it.

As for this fight wasn’t metioned before that Cotto said he didn’t have a problem coming down in weight anyway?

  • jason says:

pacman coward? hahaha brain less comments like that.. remember not only pacman will decide and to make deal for the fight,, he is only a fighter not for dealing and negotiation, remember each boxer has a coach, manager, and promoter,, and expert to to bring a match.. pacman will indanger if he fight in the bigger man, as much as possible to fight and to have a fair fight as a small man,WEIGHT is only the way… old fighter, drained, unprepare, that is an example of excuses for loser..

  • Realbox says:

    Word.

“IF PEOPLE ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO FIGHT HIM AT A CATCHWEIGHT (SINCE IT’S SUCH A BIG DEAL) THEN THEY GET WHAT’S COMING TO ‘EM.”

So you pac fans agree to what camansi and lmaoo say, he’s no national hero or p4p, hes just looking for the money with easy and stupid fighters?, you guys will watch (and over rate him)anyway.

    I was right all along.

  • lmaoo says:

    WEIGHT BARELY MATTERS.

IF PEOPLE ARE STUPID ENOUGH TO FIGHT HIM AT A CATCHWEIGHT (SINCE IT’S SUCH A BIG DEAL) THEN THEY GET WHAT’S COMING TO ‘EM.

  • Glass Joe says:

I guess you’re disappointed with Juan Manuel Marquez also since he wants Mayweather to come down to 143 or 144… on wait I forgot he’s Mexican so you only pick to write articles about the “Mexican Killer” Manny Pacquiao hmmm sounds like you’re for La Raza

  • the dude says:

Dude this is not news, we all know how disappointed you are of Pacquiao. We also know how much you deify Marquez (who should have lost twice anyway if it wasn’t for that idiot judge in the 1st match) and Margarito (the fists of stone, or plaster if you want to be technical).

  • Gav Bridges says:

A brief aside – When Roy Jones Jr. was universally regarded as the pound-for-pound king, he went up the weights, never putting catchweight stipulations in the mix, only putting weights in his pockets! I admire Pacquiao, I really do, but if he wants the pound-for-pound acknowledgement, follow the Jones jr. example, please. Really, please.

    God, I hate catchweight bouts!!

  • Batangueño says:

    Pacquiao is a coward. Period.

  • Mikey says:

the problem is,”if this is true”

Why is Pacman, suddenly demanding the catch weight be 142/143 all of a sudden. knowing that it will be too low for Cotto.

I don’t think it is that simple for Cotto. Cotto like to fight the best. The best being Pacman right now.

  • shaundt says:

the de la hoya fight or the hatton fight were not at catch weight. any one who fights at a catch weight cant complain either if your gonna be weight drained dont fight at that weight simple as

  • Mikey says:

I agree with one point. This is Pacmans biggest high risk fight of the lot, and they know that cotto needs it more anh the Pacman does. Therefore they know they can probably get cotto to agree to fight at a catch weight. Even though it will mean cotto won’t be at his best.
You can’t lose respect for the pacman cos he is P4P #1. However I can’t help but feel they are concerned about fighting a ful strength Cotto. Cotto was very week in his last 140 fight a few years back so he’ll be even worse now.

Come on PACMAN, beating a ful strength cotto will be Legendary, don’t weight Drain him.

  • SHIRO says:

MR PEREZ? LOSER!!!!! BETWEEN 2 FIGHTER PACQUAIO IS ALSO CATCHING WEIGHT….DONT FORGET THIS!!! REMEMBER PACMAN IS NOT A BIG MAN…DONT YOU THINK HE IS NOT ENDANGERING HIS LIFE TOO WHILE FIGHTING BIGGER MAN….THATS WHY THEY ARE PUTTING CATCH WEIGHT TO BE FAIR BETWEEN TWO FIGHTER….IF THEY DONT AGREE WITH THAT CATCH WEIGHT THEN THEY SHOULDNT SIGN THE CONTRACT IF THEY THINK ITS NOT FAIR..SO IF THE FIGHT HAPPEN THEN THEY AGREE WITH THE CATCH WEIGHT…SO NO EXCUSES…MAY THE BEST MAN WIN..

  • One Hitter Quitter says:

It’s pretty funny to watch this Perez kid debate with himself using different aliases. That’s classic!

  • dave says:

That to me seems really weak and I can’t respect Pacquiao or any fighter that needs a crutch like that in order to get an extra edge. THEN YOU DON’T RESPECT JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ EITHER BECAUSE HE IS FIGHTING GAYWEATHER AT CATCH WEIGHT

  • Chris says:

If you don’t agree with the CATCH WEIGHT, DON’T SIGN THE CONTRACT. IF YOU DO SIGN THE CONTRACT WITH THE CATCHWEIGHT THAT YOU DON’T AGREE ON THEN YOU ARE MORON FOR AGREEING. IF YOU LOSE DON’T MAKE ANY EXCUSES THAT YOU ARE DEHYDRATED. Enough with this catchweight bull crap. Its getting so old.

  • Chris says:

As I’m reading all these comments about Pacquiao not being the best, I began to ponder why all these haters talk so much crap about one person that most considers the best P4P King in the world. There are so much controversies surrounding his last 4 fights that he won fair and square, whether Marquez won, whether De La Hoya was dehydrated, whether Hatton is overrated…I mean come on. When are you guys going to give this man the credit that he deserves? For some reason you guys are coming with different fight scenarios that to most will think its ridiculous.

  • Chris says:

Batangueno your an idiot. Pacquiao last three fights was with Hatton, De La Hoya and David Diaz. De la Hoya was the only one who moved down the weight to fight him not the other way around. In fact Pacquiao moved up the weight class with Diaz, Hoya and Hatton. Pac man beat these guys fair and square. As a matter of fact he made every one of them looked like amateurs. There is no pattern in any of these fights. He is the P4P King so he can call all the shots. If Cotto agrees to fight him at a catch weight of 143 so be it. Its his decision. I don’t why people make such a big deal about catch weight. If they are scared to fight Pacman at 143 then don’t fight him, simple as that. Nobody is twisting their arm to yes to the catchweight that Pacquiao desires. It’s ultimately their decision. Im going to reiterate what I said earlier–Pacquiao doesn’t need them, they need Pacquiao.

  • Tony says:

Lol defend Pac, the fact is he is a champion, true, but to be the best, he needs to fight the best, Shane Mosely, Paul Williams, lets see Pac fight one of them.

  • Anonymous says:

from time that pacman chose to stay in the light welter division but only seems to want to fight welters i lost all faith in him. hope cotto breaks his ribs seeing as he was obviously too scared to fight mosley, and if he even gets the chance to fight mayweather after the cotto fight it will surely be an embaressment for the philipino fraudster i hope someone breaks his unaturally shaped eye sockets

  • Jose says:

You still think Mosley is the best welterweight huh? Hello Cotto beat him but I am also somewhat disappointed in Manny continuing to try for catch weights fights. I would rather pay to see Pacquiao versus Timothy Bradley rather then a dehydrated Cotto.

  • Batangueño says:

I am not really disappointed in Pacquiao. I mean, with his last three fights you should have seen the pattern. He is not going to fight anybody unless they are half-dead from dehydration or shot or a paper champion. Once you accept this, and you have come to terms that Pacquiao is nothing but an overrated hype product, then you would not expect too much, hence, no disappointment. Afterall, he just said “anytime, anywhere”, he didn’t say “any weight”. LOL
