By David Lahr: According to the German Bild Daily, Vitali Klitschko and David Haye will be fighting on September 12th on HBO in one of the German cities of Gelsenkirchen, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf, all of which have large stadiums that will be able to accommodate crowds of up to 60,000 boxing fans. Haye, 28, missed out on an opportunity to fight Vitali’s younger brother Wladimir Klitschko on June 20th when Haye’s back gave out on him while in training for the fight.

In most cases this would mean that Haye would have to get back in line. However, Vitali Klitschko, who holds the World Boxing Council heavyweight title, has an interest in fighting Haye because of the British fighter’s ability to sell tickets with his self promotional skills.

Haye was boxing’s best cruiserweight in 2008 before moving up to the heavyweight division where he hopes to replicate his success in the bigger division. However, as of yet Haye hasn’t proven himself against a good heavyweight and didn’t look good in his fight against journeyman Monte Barrett last November, a bout in which Haye appeared to be knocked down by Barrett in the 5th.

The British referee didn’t rule it a knockdown. However, in slow motion replay it appeared that Haye was knocked down from a punch by Barrett and then badly hurt by another punch that Barrett landed while Haye was on the canvas. Haye has a reputation of having a glass jaw from his cruiserweight days, which would seem to suggest that he won’t go far in the heavyweight division.

However, Haye is getting a chance at the heavyweight title without having to work his way through a minefield of tough opponents like most fighter would have to do, and will be getting a great chance and good payday if nothing else. This is Haye’s big shot. If he blows it by getting knocked out early or without looking good, Haye might have to consider his options about staying at the heavyweight division.

At 215, Haye is small for the division and doesn’t have the quickness with his feet or the boxing ability of other small heavyweights like Eddie Chambers. He can be successful against some heavyweights but if he’s beaten soundly by Vitali Klitschko, there may not be a lot of options available for Haye unless he plans on sticking around the division for a few years to wait Vitali out until he retires. Haye might be better off moving back down to the cruiserweight division if things go badly for him.
