Hawk “Sioux Warrior” Suffers his First Defeat at the Hands of “Too Smart” Godfrey

By Sam Gregory: The July 10th version of ESPN2 Friday Night Fights from Philadelphia features in their main event Matt “Too Smart” Godfrey 18-1 with 10 KO’s who takes on undefeated Shawn “The Sioux Warrior” Hawk 18-0 with 16 KO’s in a scheduled 10 round bout in the cruiserweight division.

Matt Godfrey came out at the start of the bout fighting from the southpaw stance. The southpaw stance worked for Godfrey and he was able to double up on his jab enough to take control of the fight early on.

Godfrey did just enough to stay in control of the fight and win rounds. As the fight moved through the 3rd and 4th rounds Godfrey did just enough to win rounds but he had little opposition from his opponent, Henry looked frozen and overwhelmed having no answer for Godfrey’s punches.

By the middle rounds of the fight Godfrey was pot-shoting Hawk with jabs doing just enough to carry the rounds. Godfrey looked like he was coasting on auto-pilot.

After the 6th round the unofficial scorecard had the fight a lot closer than it looked to me. Teddy Atlas admittedly was being very generous.

In the 10th round Godfrey went down on what was ruled as a slip by the referee. Not usually worth mentioning but it was actually one of the more exciting parts of the fight.

At the end of the fight it went to the judge’s scorecards which read 99-91, 97-93 and 98-92 all for the winner by unanimous decision Matt Godfrey. Godfrey improved his record to 19-1 with 10 KO’s while Shawn Hawk suffered his first defeat and fell to 18-1.
