Hatton Says He Was Over-Trained for Pacquiao Bout, and Rules out a Fight with Khan for the Time Being
By Jim Dower: Former light welterweight/Welterweight champion Ricky Hatton says that he was over-trained for his fight with Manny Pacquiao and that he peeked too soon, according to his comments in the Sportinglife. Hatton, 30, feels that he “left too much in the gym” while training for his fight with Pacquiao by over doing it at too early in the training camp.
Hatton was destroyed by Pacquiao in a 2nd round knockout on May 2nd, and knocked completely out cold for over three minutes. All total, Hatton was knocked down three times in the fight, twice in the 1st round and a final time in the 2nd.
In another direction, Hatton squashed the rumors about him possibly coming back to fight World Boxing Association light welterweight champion Amir Khan, saying It’s not even a starting point if Frank Warren is going to promote it. I don’t want to go down that line, although I’m not saying it’s never going to happen.” Hatton was previously promoted by Warren in the past.
However, Hatton at least leaves a glimmer of hope in a possible fight with Khan. Hatton obviously is aware of the big money he can get in a fight with Khan and is tempted. There are few other fighters in boxing that can bring in the kind of money that a fight with Khan for Hatton.
Of course, Hatton always has the alternative to go after a rematch with Pacquiao or Mayweather, two of the biggest stars in boxing, but with Hatton not making much of an effort to get his career back on track by getting back in the ring and beating some fighters, he’s making it all but impossible for him to rebuild his career.
Without Hatton fighting, the chances are slim that boxing fans or the cable companies would be interested in seeing Hatton jump straight into a fight with Mayweather or Pacquiao. Hatton isn’t mentioning those fighters, but those are the limited choices for Hatton if he wants to continue to make big money in his career.
He needs a high profile opponent and can’t fight just anyone and expect to get a huge payday. Juan Manuel Marquez was recently mentioned as a possible opponent that Hatton might be interested in fighting, but only if Marquez can get by Mayweather in September. That doesn’t look as if it’s going to happen, because is predicted to win that fight.
Recently, Hatton was in the hospital to have his stomach checked out after contracting a stomach virus. While in the hospital, it was discovered that Hatton had a heart murmur. He was promptly advised by the doctors to curtail his binge eating and drinking or else risk serious health problems.
In recent photos of Hatton, he looked to have put on 25 to 30 pounds since his May 2nd fight with Pacquiao. It was shocking to see how heavy that Hatton had gotten in such a short period of time and a good indication that he’s been overindulging with either food or drink, likely both since that time.

“Over-trained?…. Hell NO!!!! It’s more like
“Ill-trained or not-at-all trained” to me HBO 24/7 gave them the famous Secret Weapon in the form of “RIGHT HOOK, ROLL UNDER”. Everybody’s watching it.. For me it had no implication since I wasn’t the one fighting Pacquiao. For a trainer and a boxer to just mucking it as another right hook, roll under and consider it insignificant to them was the biggest blunder of all. Consider this. Everybody saw that beautiful “NO LOOK PUNCHES IN BUNCHES” that found all its marks at Hatton’s different body parts, is poetry in motion. Pacquiao did not develop that muscle-memory instantly. He got it by studying your move Mr. Hatton. Buboy Fernandez should be commended for doing an excellent job of timing and dissecting your moves etched in your muscle memory. Training is not just about running, hitting speed bags and mitts. Its about studying the strength and weaknesses of your opponents, and zero-in your training to the known strengths and weaknesses. Better Luck next time, as the saying goes in Las Vegas….
hatton is an amazing pressure fighter. he has the stamina, strength, and heart to be a good boxer. unfortunately for him, boxing is much more than tenaciousness. he completely lacks true boxing skill and ring generalship to become one of the greats. ricky good, pac and mayweather great. and that’s the difference. plain and simple.
Except you have priviously boxed then i dont think you would understand what it means to have over trained. Its an experience were you left feeling weeked and things just dont flow like they would when you peeking.
Its easy to be criticl and it even makes people feel better in the short term.
Hatton was world champion for four years and where was Pacquio then.
Hatton would be the first to say he was beaten fair and square. In this comment hes anylising the fight. All poeple who want to be good at anything must review their experience, or else how do you progress.
both training camps had given timetables to prepare for the fight. dont make excuses hatton, a win was a win, a loss was a lose u know that so stop dragging urself down. just prove that ur still a worthy fighter en i’l be ur fan if u gonna prove it.
this site either hates pacquiao or huggers of aore loosers like hatton and dela hoya.
EXCUSES EXCUSES EXCUSES. TOO MANY FU***n EXCUSES!!!
What a disappointing statement from Hatton. You’ve let me down once by losing to Pacquiao. Dont let me down by saying this-and-that (being over-trained). We’re not going to feel any better from this report.
maybe hatton could have lasted 3 rounds if he was not over trained…
I saw it coming…lady luck is always on Pacquiao’s side whenever he fights. All of his victories happened not because of what he did but because of what his opponent failed to do(not training properly, not hydrating, not following to game plan blah blah blah)
Come november 14 Pacquiao will once again win because of Cottos failure to do one thing -TO GET UP BEFORE THE COUNT OF TEN!!!
PEACE MGA KAPATID…MABUHAY ANG PRISIDINTI!!!!
ohhh..c’mon man…over trained? please watch your 24/7 interview, so you may hear yourself again before the fight.
A lot have morgaged their houses, emptied their banks for you man…during the weigh in, you told them that you’ll not dissappoint them…
Your camp told to everybody that your trainer always comes late during training…and now here your are preaching that you were OVERTRAINED…ohhhh c’mon..man….tell that to the drunken BRITS. by the way…are you drunk?heheehe
To Ukansodoff:
England maybe an island but it was an empire before, conquering weaker kingdoms, hence the better-than-you attitude passed down by generations of ‘royals’. That’s why it’s difficult for them to accept defeat from someone who they think is ‘below’ them. I think Manny Pacquiao really did a ‘Uilleam Uallas’ on Hatton. Ricky came looking to take away his p4p trinket but he was sent back home with his head down.
got to go. my lawyer’s here. it sucks. i’m in full video surveillance.
WHAT NEXT, UNCLE FLOYD FORGOT TO TUCK HIM IN AT NIGHT AND HE WETS HIS PANTS? ALL THOSE 24/7 COMMENTS ABOUT HOW HE WILL BE THE BIGGER GUY, AND THAT MANNY HAS NEVER FOUGHT ANYONE LIKE HIM. YEAH, MANNY HAS NOT KO’D A JR WELTERWEIGHT BEFORE SO HE IS RIGHT.
I believe Mr. Hatton overtrained!!! Overtrained of drinking 2 gallons of beer everyday and after the training session, that,s why his mind and body is not coordinating well!and because of this! he should be given a rematch with manny!!! next time he will consume 3 gallons of beer everyday!!! and he need jacky chan( drunken master) to teach him some techniques how to fight while drunk!!!
“You got knocked the f–K out!! Man !! ”
– Chris Tucker
….losing is not always a defeat..come on ricky be a man enough to accept that pacman is the best…
I advice hatton to just pursue MMA.. you dont have to control your eating and as mayweather quote it MMA is for beer drinkers. hey man your qualified. whahahaha
DAEMMM YOUR GETTING FAT… LOL HATTON CAME IN THERE AGAINST PACQUIAO THINKING IT WAS A BAR FIGHT. LOL
I remember b4 the fight, hitman words”empty the bank put on me” shame of what happen picking alibis that nobody buy…….
overtrained?well?maybe you are..because you are so easy to hit..you look like an amateur..
Overtrained??????? That fight was nowhere near long enough to come to that conclusion. An overtrained fighter will have at least a few good rounds in him and wouldn’t get knocked out cold in the 2nd round.
If Hatton becomes too fat, smelly and disgusting for his hot English girlfriend to take any more, I want Her Hotness to know that I keep myself in good shape, unlike Ricky, and that when he falls on his face and ED entirely takes over, I can be there for her. Out–
you’re a very good comdian, keep up the good work!
Hatton will still a great fighter he just picked a wrong trainer. He should have just stuck with his long time trainer. The problem why he lost to PBF is he had to go up in weight and that just made him slower. If PBF had gone down in weight and they had met at a catchweight like maybe at 143lbs. It would have been a more fair fight. But PBF just beat a more fatter Hatton. As for Pac his trainer should have reminded him in the beginning of the fight to bob & weave.
This is funny, before they faught I knew this was going to be one of the excuses I was going to hear.hahaha.. But I didn’t expect to hear it from Hatton himself..LMAO
Sheesh, look at how he big he has gotten. Well, I do hope he has one more good fight before he retires.
over trained though tell it to the marines….hilarious
The punch that rocked pacman…hmmm….isn’t that the one that hit pacman’s forearm that caught manny off-balance?
It seems Ricky wants to join the club of JMM hehe!
cry, cry, cry (I should have won the fight!!!). Accept that Manny is the best!!!
Yeah< i'll leave Hatton alone if he gives credit where credit is due. The problem it seems nowadays is that true sportsmanship has gone out the window. Now we have all this "warrior" trash talk. Boxing is a sport and that's how it should remain! You are supposed to congratulate the victor. Hatton has never congratulated Pacquiao in public, at least i'm unaware of it.
Add Hatton’s name to Marquez and De La Hoya – they get beat by Pacquiao and refuse to believe it and make excuses.
I taped the Pacquiao-Hatton fight in 1080p High Def and have watched it about a hundred times. Hatton never learns. Every time I have watched it he gets the crap beaten out of him!!!! He is not only a bad club fighter but he is dumber than a sack of potatoes. You’d think he’d learn.
hey steve is that really u?ha ha
Ciao everyone! Another typical Englishman bollocks.
But understandable though, maybe his defeat to Pacquiao is too embarassing to accept. Knocked out by a Filipino who first fought at 106 lbs. Typical of the English too, being so above-it-all. His defeat from Mayweather was easier to accept, because he’s American. It’s the thing with the folks from superpower countries, they can’t accept defeat from little guys from little islands.
AT THE END OF THE DAY HE LOST TOO TWO OF HE BEST PUND FOR POUND FIGHTERS IN THE WORLD…
YOU CANT DOUBT THE GUY HES BEATED THE BEST AND CAME ACROSS TWO OF THE BEST TOO LATE ON IN HIS CAREER, HATTON WOULD STILL BEAT KHAN HANDS DOWN EVERY TIME. KHAN IS GOOD BUT NEVER GOING TO BE THE HITMAN. NEITHER IS HE EVER GOING TO BEAT MAYWEATHER OR PACMAN. EG. KHAN COULD BE 28 MAYWEATHER NEARING 40… MAYWEATHER WILL STILL BEAT HIM. HATTON HAD A BLOODY GOOD GO AT MAYWEATHER AND WAS UNLUCKY. LEAVE HIM ALONE!!
Hey, Jim!
Overtrained? What a word!Pacquiao should have lost because he was more “overtrained” because he did twice as much as the planned sparring rounds.
It seems to me that Hatton was UNDERTRAINED because Floyd Sr. was always late during training. And Hatton even skipped the Day 1 training — HOW TO PUT YOUR HANDS UP TRAINING. Just watch Floyd Sr. said after Round 1.
So there you go, he’s UNDERTRAINED.
Losers lot of alibis!!! Just accept it Ricky.
OMG! Is that you Ricky? So you got a new word to add to Pacman losers dictionary of alibis! OVERTRAINED!cmon mate! no matter how you trained, you’ll end up in the same place! it took years of hardwork, humility and prayers for this guy to become the greatest boxer that he is today. try to save whatever respect that’s left in us for you Ricky! Be man enough to accept defeat!
I hope he fights Witter. That has to happen.
Overtrained? It was more like UNDERestimated Pacquiao’s punching power…Ricky said that Oscar told him that Pacquiao doesn’t hit hard, and unfortunately for Ricky, he believed it.
I doubt there will be much going on further down the line, i honestly think Hattons about ready to retire he just doesnt want to go out on that last loss.
Even as a MASSIVE Hatton fan i see no point trying to make excuses. He may of really overtrained, he did look all pasty and worn on fight night and energy sapped you cant take power punches as well as normal.
But come on, he says he overtrained, i dont see any training regarding dodging Pacmans best move. He walked stright into it as if he had no idea it was coming.
Facing people of that level you have to work really hard on your defence so you can actually have your chance at attacking yourself. Hatton gave himself no chance and thats not overtraining thats a lack of concentration or talent.
Hatton should quit boxing. Beer drinking competition will be his next sport..
Another – cry baby – “Welcome to the club!” JMM.
Dear oh dear. The word ‘deluded’ springs to mind. Is it just me, or does looking at that photo of him make you think there is a village somewhere without its idiot? I mean, look at his hair; it looks like his mother has given him a pudding basin trim. I guess he has blown all his money on lager and donner kebabs.
I think we would all have more respect for him if he just admitted that he was not in the same class as either Mayweather or Pacman. Sadly, the idiotic tabloid press we have over here, and the drunken cretins that follow him, have built him up to believe he is far better than he really is. Sad.
ricky u done us proud all threw ur carrer an gave us great memmoreys ur still a legend in my eyes.
Over-trained?! LMAO looks more like over-eaten to me.
lol i think this truly is the end of hatton as much as it hurts me to say
shut up ricky stop making excuses, your not even in the same league as pacquiao and it showed ont he night, your excuses get worse and worse, and the reason u dont want to fight khan is because ur afraid u would lose, which personally i think u would, reture concentrate on promoting please
