Can Marquez humble Mayweather?

By Phil George: Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be underestimating Juan Manuel Marquez in his September 19th fight. Many people are writing off this durable Mexican fighter, making Mayweather the considerable favorite. Is this justifiable? Marquez has humbled Cuban Joel Casamayor and the “Baby Bull” Juan Diaz in his last two fights, which is proof enough that he is one tough cookie. In his two huge fights with Manny Pacquiao, Marquez proved that he has the natural ability to adjust in fights, a quality which all champions possess.
This is one dangerous fight for Mayweather. Marquez has a great chin, is a great counter puncher like Mayweather, and knows when to change his tactics. The more I think about this fight and Marquez’s attributes, the more I realize he has the ability to give Mayweather big problems. Both these fighters like to counter punch. The problem being this could make for a slow, cagey fight, both fighters trying to quietly score points forcing the other to go out of their comfort zones in the late rounds.
If Marquez can keep using that jab of his to score points and force Mayweather to be a little too ambitious in the late rounds, Marquez could well steal the fight. Could Mayweather’s relative inactivity as of late taken that edge off him? Marquez has certainly kept himself busy. Perhaps Manny Pacquiao will indeed have to face his old rival once again, and Mayweather’s questionable p4p champion title been decided, avoiding fighters like Paul Williams, and Antonio Margarito has to be questioned.

You guys talk about Marquez’s victories being unimpressive–why don’t you use basic logic and get your facts straight? Pacquiao beat an old, overweight DLH, a lightweight who was never very talented (Diaz), and an overrated Hatton who always sort of sucked anyway (come on, the guy struggled against Juan Lazcano). Before that, he beat a Morales who had lost 3 of his last 4 fights, a Barrera who was much older and basically from a previous generation of fighters, and an Oscar Larios who had been knocked out in his previous fight. Pacquiao’s only victory that WOULD have been impressive had it been clear was against Marquez. But after knocking Marquez (who is much OLDER than Pacquiao by the way) down 3 times in one round, he couldn’t even finish the job. Hell, YEARS LATER, when Marquez was MUCH OLDER, Pacquiao couldn’t even clearly beat him! Pacquiao’s team will probably wait until Marquez is 39 to do the rematch, which Pacquiao will win because of Marquez’s age, and then they’ll say “see, it’s settled, Pacquiao was always the better fighter.” And Mayweather is the joke? If anyone is overrated, it’s Pacquiao, by far. Fact is that the most vocal commentators on these websites are probably all guys who would literally kiss Pacquiao’s ass (and do other things) in public if asked to.
fact is marquez is an exelent fighter.. he has a great chance of defeating the black a** mayweather.. but he was not half as good as manny.. before he can go toe to toe with manny but manny has improved a lot.. he was stagnant… and to the person saying that manny ducked marquez for going up in junior welter.. your mama is dumb ass… ahihihihi
If Floyd was that confident that he IS the best, he wouldn’t have to TELL people. People would tell him.

I agree with you that Floyd COULD beat Cotto, Mosley, and Pacquiao, but to put it mildly, Floyd doesn’t have the balls to face those guys as he’s too worried about keeping his “0″. Every time Floyd tells every one he’s the best, he points to his “0″. Well, “0″ don’t mean jack when you’ve been cherry picking for the past 4 years. That’s what frustrates me is that Floyd HAS the skill to be the best, but he hides behind his “0″. When was the last time he fought a top 5 welter? Mosley said it best when Brian Kenny brought to his attention the fact that Floyd pointed out that he’s not fighting Mosley because Mosley lost 5 times…Mosley’s response “to guys that FLoyd wouldn’t even get in the ring with” – SNAP. BTW, when has anyone ever mentioned PBF against Dawson or Pavlik? PBF would have gotten more credit if he fought Berto or Clottey as opposed to a blown up lightweight. LOL.

Facing Mayweather is actually a step down for Marquez. He should opt for a rubbermatch with Pacquiao because they bring out the best in each other. With Mayweather, he’s just stepping in the ring with an idiot.
If they fought below 140, I’d say JMM has a chance… slim, but winnable. JMM struggled in all of his fights above 130. Watch all videos, he trailed all his fights, now the question: how can he beat Mayweather at his most comfortable weight? Nah! Very very slim chance. Remember, he gave Pac the hardest fights of his career… but don’t forget… it was at 126 and 130. I can’t see JMM lasting more than 6 rounds with Pac at 140 and above.
Marquez after beating floyd would give no doubt to clash with manny in the 3rd time. It would be a very anticipating fight. Two fighters comes from featherweights, destined to meet at welterweight just to prove who among them is the best.

Im a pacfan but I respect Marquez because he is the only one to put up a good fight with PAC. I Know Morales beat pac but without the bloody gash above PAC’s eye that blinded him most of the fight that would have been easily a unanimous decision for PAC. Marquez will win unanimous decision against PBF. PBF mind is mostly on PAC these days that even his sparring partner tagged him on the ribs. Imagine what a legend like Marquez will do. Mayweather is in big trouble. Marquez will be the fastest fighter that Mayweather faces. (Lower Divisions usually are)And if Mayweather gets KO’ed maybe on the 11th or 12th. both marquez and mayweather are counter puncher and no excitement in ring for the viewers. this is one of the many reasons their tickets until now never get a sold out… until september fights. viewers nevers excited in this fights. let us finished the business and who win the fight… Pacman in the next and that is more exciting in the ring. in my opinion mayweather will win the fight.

The truth is I really like Marquez to win this fight against this moneymayweather his so arogant a racist a so proud guy that he thinks he is the best that nobody can beat him. But I got his respect from betting guys in the likes of Castillo who at that time is punishing Mayweather with body shots but withstood the punishment & went on the win a decision. Now let me tell anybody who reads this that am not a fan of Mayweather I hate the guy with his docking because he wants to maintain his PPV. There is no question that Marquez can and will not humble but humiliate Mayweather. Marquez along with Barrera, Morales and Pacquiao were the cream of the featherweights then. Going up in weight did not seem to bother Marquez like Manny although few have noticed it since the focus of attention went to Manny. Marquez is wily, very agile, and has a steel chin. With all the knockdowns he received from Manny, he more than survived but made a fight out of their encounters. David Diaz did not survive, De la Hoya did not survive, and Ricky Hatton did not survive but Marquez did and more. Expect a Marquez victory against Mayweather. Believe it or not…that will be the outcome.

Although I’m not interested in this fight at all due to its questionable significance in the welterweight ranking, i do hoped that Marquez win this fight. Marquez is a tough warrior that only proved it with his calling of Mayweather. Floyd on the other hand has came out of retirement and instead of facing men his own size chosed the smaller Marquez. Not so fast. Why are so many people writing off Juan Diaz? He was definitely winning the fight and then just got tagged. He was winning going to the body and then started targeting the head more and that’s when he got tagged. Juan Manuel is a great fighter but Baby Bull was killing him before he got tagged.
I thought Juan Diaz was winning the fight up until about the 6th and Marquez pulled off a great stoppage.
Bottom line is Marquez is jumping 2 weight divisions to fight Mayweather, for all his ability, he is just moving up too much weight against a top boxer.
Mayweather will never be considered a legend in the welter division, simply because he has not fought, or beat the best, Williams,Cotto,Mosley,Margarito…
