Arguello Dead at 57; Hatton Not in Training for Comeback – News

arguello2By Jim Dower: According to news reports, former four division world title champion Alexis Arguello (82-5, 65 KO’s) was found dead in his home today from a gunshot wound to his chest in Managua, Nicaragua. There’s no word as of yet about who may have shot Arguello or whether it was self inflicted.

Arguello, 5’10”, known for his huge power and his slender frame, dominated the featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight divisions during the 70s and early 80s. He was defeated twice by Aaron Pryor in two grueling and controversial bouts in 1982 and 1983, losing both by knockout. Those two fights took a lot out of Arguello, as well as Pryor.

Arguello fought only four more times after the 2nd fight. Arguello took a year off after his second loss to Pryor and didn’t fight at all in 1984. He came back in 1985 and stopped Pat Jefferson. The next year, he stopped British light welterweight Billy Costello in a 4th round TKO.

Following that fight, Arguello retired from boxing for eight years until staging a comeback in 1994 with a 10-round majority decision over Jorge Palamares. Arguello wasn’t the same fighter after making his comeback and would lose his next fight to Scott Walker in a 10-round decision in January 1995.

Arguello retired from boxing after that fight. In a footnote, Julio Cesar Chavez would avenge Arguello’s loss to Walker, by destroying Walker in a 2nd round TKO in February 1996.

Hatton’s Lawyer Denies that Ricky Is in Training for a Comeback

According to Gareth Davies of the Telegraph, the lawyer for Ricky Hatton said that Hatton is working out in the gym, but that Hatton isn’t preparing for a comeback fight. Hatton is merely working out to keep in shape rather than letting himself bloat up in weight like he sometimes does in between fights.

However, this is still a good sign that Hatton may be thinking about continuing with his boxing career, because it’s not normal for him to work out when he has no fights scheduled. So perhaps Hatton is contemplating making a comeback in the near future.

Hatton, 30, was destroyed by Manny Pacquiao in a 2nd round knockout on May 2nd of this year. The fight was a crushing blow for Hatton’s career, because of the one-sided nature of the bout in which Hatton was knocked down three times. Since the defeat, Hatton hasn’t said whether he will be continuing with his career or not.

Many of his biggest fans have called for Hatton to retire, saying that he doesn’t have it anymore. However, there are even more fans of his who want him to continue to fight and feel that the loss isn’t a signal that Hatton is a shot fighter.

There are hopes that if Hatton does come back, he might consider fighting lightweight contender Amir Khan. The fight would be huge in England due to Khan’s popularity. Khan has a fight coming up on July 18th against WBA light welterweight champion Andriy Kotelnik, and if Khan is beaten then any hopes of a Hatton-Khan fight will go down the drain with that fight.

Well it was just a vent for me after reading so much junk about him. So it wasnt particulary somthing that i had read on this page.

Well thats a good question i think if he had faught pacpuio in stead of tyszu for the tittle then Hatton still would have won.
Maywheather am not sure hes a big guy for Hatton.

Any way i get sick of all the crictics, and espcially when they curse continually, it just makes them look less inteligent then they are and for me dosnt have the effect they anticipate. I dont see boxing as a destructive thing were i would sream knock his head when watching a bout. i see it as a composition and when fighting we are composing a symphony or painting a picture. Just watch them, hagler or robinson. And to compose well you must understand the science ofthe sport

Who on this page has been putting Hatton down or critisizeing him? no one

He’s one of my sporting heros, i just pointed out he has put on weight already,

and you cant honestly say you think he would beat mayweather or pacquio if they fought again, that might just be blind loyalty rather than analytical boxing knowlage

    Well said!

I dont know what the deal is with every body putting hatton down.

Its allways easy to be a critic though i guess, id rather be positive and not put people down.

Any way i dont think he is finished but i am wondering if he could still fight the way he did when he wore down Costa Tszyu. That was truely a brave effort he put in against a much more skilled opponent. So there is the question as to if May wheather was just a little to big and had damaged hatton, but i dont think his has completly lost his punch resistnace, he just went in against two good fighers and got caught. The last fight really didnt prove much for me as he wasnt prpared going in and that punch would have nocked out a middle wieght.

One more thing where were Pac man and Floyd when hatton was ruling his division for 4 years as champion infact where was anybody.

I think a reunion with mr Greham wouldnt go a miss for Hatton if he is humble enough which i think he is.

I for one am tired of hearing people critisize and
bad mouth Ricky Hatton. There are very few men in the history of the sport of boxing that can match his accomplishments.

I don’t think that Hatton is finished at all. But I do think that at his high level of competition he has reached the extreme highs, but you also must expect that with the number of fights he has had that you have to expect the lows. I don’t belive that Mayweather or Pac are any better than Hatton, I just think that eventually Hatton had to have a few days of bad luck.

Hatton did very well with Mayweather, and in my own humble opinion, if he had a second crack at either one of them, that he would beat them.

Obviously I have a very high opinion of the great fighter Ricky Hatton, but I do believe that I am right. After all, if Joe Louis, Ali, Tyson and more recently Lennox Lewis can be brutally knocked out and defeated and return to become champion, then why can we not expect the same from Ricky Hatton.

    RIP

Though i would mention i met Ricky a few weeks ago and he had put on a lot of weight, had just got back from holiday though so was probably suffering a bit from that, good to hear he is working out

  • Callum says:

R.I.P, and good news about Hatton :)

R.I.P Champ. I was fortunate to have met you a few times. You were always so nice w/ your time. My children still remember that day w/ you.
