When Will Haye Make a Decision About His next Opponent?

By Chris Williams: If you’re like a lot of boxing fans, you’re wondering when David Haye and his aching back will get off the pot and make a decision about whom he will be fighting next. He pulled out of once in a lifetime dream match with IBF/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko a couple of weeks ago and basically tossed away the June 20th title shot.

Wladimir wasn’t about to sit idle for three weeks – or whenever Haye’s back heals up – twiddling his thumbs waiting for Haye to feel good enough to fight again. Wladimir did the wise and logical thing by getting a replacement in Ruslan Chagaev, who will probably turn out to be a much better opponent that Haye would ever be.

But now that the Haye-Wladimir fight is done and buried, when will Haye reveal who his next opponent will be? You’d like to think that Haye will be letting the fans know soon if he was anyone in mind, because Haye hasn’t seen action in the ring since beating journeyman Monte Barrett seven long months ago in November 2008.

Haye probably can’t afford to sit idle for an entire year waiting on one of the Klitschko brothers to come available. This is why I’m wondering whether Haye will make an announcement that about his next opponent soon.

Vitali Klitschko has been mentioned as an opponent, but big Vitali still has his plate full with his WBC mandatory challenger Oleg Maskaev, who he will probably be forced to fight next by the WBC or else risk being stripped.

Haye needs to move forward and look at an alternative to the Klitschko brothers. Haye may not want to fight one of the top contenders but he really needs to do the right thing and stay busy by choosing someone good.

When I say “good” I’m referring to at least the level of someone like Kevin Johnson, Chris Arreola or Alexander Dimitrenko. Haye won’t serve himself well if he chooses another journeyman to fight because, for one it won’t help him prepare for the Klitschko brothers, and two it will fly in the face of all Haye’s talk about wanting to fight only the best.

If he truly wants to fight only the best fighters, then why did Haye fight a journeyman last time out? I’m not going to be an enabler for the guy by sitting quietly and saying nothing when he fights easy opponents. I’m going to call him on the low level opponents that he’s facing and ask why he’s fighting soft guys if he’s supposed to be the new era for the heavyweight division.

So far, I’ve seen nothing new from Haye other than his talk, and even that has been done before by Muhammad Ali. But in the case of Ali, he went after the best early in his career before he became the heavyweight champion. I haven’t seen that with Haye.

Hopefully, Haye shows some backbone and doesn’t decide to sit around for a year waiting on a fight with one of the Klitschko brothers. He needs to show whether he has the ability required to be a good heavyweight by beating one of the top heavyweights in the division while he waits on the Klitschko brothers to get freed up from their commitments.

Haye needs to fight twice before he steps in ring with the Klitscho’s brothers. Wladimir has his hands full against Chagaev. So Haye the fighters that’s all some action in the Heavyweight is calling for u. Kevin Johnson say’s he will close ur mouth for u if u step in the ring with him. Lamon Brewster is another fighter that’s ready to do battle for the spot again. Chris Arreola vs. Lamon Brewster would be a fight to see. Lamon is a Former Heavyweight Champ at one time by KO’ing Wladimir for the Title.

Adam – you say you dont like Haye because he is mouthy and disrespectful…… you are the loudest and most disrespectful yank prick this world has ever seen. So just shut up you dumb pathetic little hypocrite

  • james says:

u talk shite, u say haye is a p@ssy he pulled out, floyd mayweather pulled out of his fight and u dont say a f@#kin word on that, kotelnik pulled out of khans fight its postponed for 3 weeks, khan showed hes a decent guy and sed he wud wait until 3 weeks so kotelnik is ready why cudnt vladamir klitschko do the same?

  • Ukansodoff says:

David Haye has made it very very clear who he wants to fight.

The minute Vladimir saw the chance to run off like a chicken shit instead of waiting another 3 weeks Haye set his sights on his tougher brother.

And thats were we are at now. Haye is trying to fight Vitali, if Vitali isnt interested Haye will have to look for somebody else, but right now he wants a Klitchko.

If he doesnt get that then im sure he will face a decent contender, he may be the real deal, he may be deluded about his chances but he believes hes the real deal and if he cant go straight for the title he will do what he has to do to make sure he gets there in the end.

Thats how hes always worked, hes not afraid of anybody and will travel to get what he wants. Unlike Americans and the German based boxers who wont leave home soil for anything.

I want to see him fight Solis! Solis beat him in the olympics, I’d kill to see a rematch.

  • Scott D says:

Are Williams and Adam the same person? You know, like Jekyll and Hyde! One writes articles and the other posts trash talk that he apparently hates from anybody else!!

Haye has missed out on the opportunity to fight Wlad this year seeing as Povetkin is lined up for November time. So why rush his recovery? He can now take time to heal properly and get back to full strength before seeking an opponent.

That’s what id be doing anyway!

The comment posted here by JIM is one of the best I have ever seen, Boxing 24 should give him a job as he knows what he is talking about and can actually string a few words together unlike alot of ‘journalists’ on here.

  • Ward says:

    Look at arreola’s record

This is just a few examples – -

In his ninth fight he fought somone with a 2-4 record.

    14th fight – 13-15

    16th fight – 21 -27

    23rd fight – 26 – 14

His last fight jameel mcline who had lost 3 out of his last 4 fights and was 39.

Come on where is the article about this guy not fighting anyone any good???

  • Nick says:

Haye should fight Johnson or Arreola before he thinks of a world title shot. People can make fun of Arreola. The fact is: Arreola can punch, he has heart and his chin is pretty strong. He got knocked down by Travis Walker and yet he came back and stopped Walker.

If Johnson or Arreola land a big punch on Haye, will Haye be able to take it? Why is Haye so insistant on fighting just the Klitschko’s. It is not fair on the other contenders who are fighting their way to a title shot.

  • cutman says:

Haye forsook his grand opportunity to fight the champion because of a claimed “back injury” that appears to take exactly 3 weeks to heal. Haye’s wise decision to avoid an inconvenient KO at the hands of Wladimir Klitschko has side tracked the “Hayemaker” into fighting lesser foes for the time being. This may have been the plan all along, make a lot of noise but don’t get hurt in the process and then make some easy money fighting the nebbishes of the division. Presto, D.D. Haye a commodity at heavyweight without the grind of the trenches.

  • Rich says:

Me too Dan, I’m still going anyway sod it!!

  • Daniel says:

“Hmm, so Klitschko couldn’t wait 3 weeks?”

Klitschko could have wait 3 weeks.. but 60.000 people couldnt wait.
There was a big hype about this fight.. but witch Chagaev as a replacement, this hype is even bigger. I cant wait for saturday, when i will be one of the 60.000…

  • Mikey Boy says:

Hmm, so Klitschko couldn’t wait 3 weeks? Haye has generated alot of interest in this fight, more interest than you would get for a Klitschko fight in fact.

You honestly believe that Klitschko done the right thing by picking Chaegev? Pfft. The fact is if any boxer injures himself, they will not fight untill 100% fit. Why would Haye ruin his chances if his back is injured?

Would you be saying the same thing about Mayweather now he hurt the cartlidge in his rib? I doubt it.

The fact is, you put Haye in the ring with Chris Arreola (who is gifted a higher rank with no names on his record of any value compared to Haye), and he WILL be bombed. I wish someone would sacrifice themselves to Haye soon. Besides, the majority of legitimate boxing pundits and journalists in the US are impressed by Haye and think he is an exciting boxer. An opinion which has some weight behind it.

It’s just a shame that the “pundits” on here can’t see it.

  • Jim says:

Chris Williams, why don’t you educate that empty head of yours before spouting utter nonsense?

Maybe, just maybe, Haye is genuinely injured, have you considered that? You seem to think Haye withdrew just to get on YOUR nerves. Grow up FFS.

Monte Barrett was a decent enough opponent for Haye and I remember plenty of people picking him to “expose” Haye and send him back to cruiser. You were probably one of them. Barrett had a top 10 ranking from one of the major organisations. That was all Haye promised and he duly delivered.

As for his “low level” opponents, you again reveal your ignorance and lack of knowlegde. Let me break it down for you. Haye faced 5 Ring mag current or future top 10 opponents. He knocked out 4 of them (Gurov, Maccarinelli, Mormeck and Fragomeni) and lost to Carl Thompson who was ranked 5th at the time, IBO champ and only Haye’s 11th pro fight. Soft opponents? Yea right. Let’s not forget, he took Mormeck (Ring champion and acknowledged “Man” of the division”) in his back yard and knocked him out in front of his own fans. Another soft touch right?

In addition to the 5 Ring mag top 10 opponents he faced, he also faced Glen Kelly, Lasse Johannsen, Arthur Williams and Vincenzo Rossito, all of whom possessed a top 10 ranking with a major organisation. He knocked all of them out as well.

So that’s 9 top 10 calibre opponents in 21 fights (all knocked out), which include the Ring Mag, WBC and WBA champ and a unification with the WBO champ.

Show me a comparable resume in the sport today at 21 fights. Just one!

Now granted, he hasn’t achieved a whole lot at heavy (yet), but his two opponents – Bonin, carried a WBC no 11 ranking (knocked out in the 1st, down 3 times) and Barrett who was ranked 6 by the WBO (knocked out and down multiple times).

I will end it there as I have more than made my point.

  • Adam says:

Haye will hop in the ring next whenever Monte Barret has a free moment. This guy is a coward and won’t step in the ring with anybody thats a contender because he knows he will get KTFO.The only excitement that Haye brings is the fact that eveybody and their brothers wants to see this hype job get the fk beat outta him.

  • Clive says:

I am sick of reading your David Haye rants Mr Williams, you are obviously a total prick.

The greatest had far more heavyweight fights in his career before he fought Liston than Haye has had. David Haye has had two heavyweight contests before calling out Klitchko.

An injury has postponed him realising his dream and I cant wait for him to ram your racist outbursts straight back down your throat when he becomes world champ.

  • Ward says:

That is so true simon by the way.

  • Ward says:

I hope to god haye fights that blob of mess arreola that would be so funny, hayemaker knocking that lump of lard to sleep. Then to see what article you could dream up after that.

Lets be honest even if haye beat arreola or anyone else you would still make something up to put him down.

WHY DO YOU KEEP WRITING ABOUT THE SAME MAN IF YOU DISLIKE HIM THAT MUCH ITS SO WEIRD???

  • Jack P says:

This artical proves you really do care about Haye, despite bashing him constantly. You want to see Haye in the ring as much as the British guys because he excites boxing fans, and god knows boxing is in dire need of that.
