Ortiz KO’d in the 6th!
By Eric Hernandez: Tonight was suppose to be the out coming party for Victor Ortiz, instead what we might have gotten was a retiring party. After getting knocked out by Marcos Rene Maidana (26-1 25 ko’s) Victor Ortiz sounded like a man not long for this sport. I have stated in the past that putting the super star tag on Victor Ortiz before he was tested was premature and that tonight would be his greatest test and sadly enough he failed miserably.
Round one started with both fighters looking apprehensive, Maidana was looking down right nervous and was way too tight so when he got floored in the first round it wasn’t exactly unexpected, what came next was, a perfect right hand by Maidana dropped Ortiz and he got up wobbly and with a minute left in the round the end for Ortiz was a possibility.
In round 2 the Victor Ortiz who many predict would be the next super star showed up, he control the round with good shots from both hands but it was the right hand perfectly deposited at maidana chin that caused Maidana to not only go down but contemplate quitting, there was yet another knock down just before the bell rang and it appeared that the end of this fight was coming to an end and Ortiz would survive to live another day but a funny thing happen on the way to super stardom, while Ortiz won round 3 and round 4 the fight began to look a bit a bit dangerous for Ortiz.
Round 5 started with Ortiz putting punches together and there were some bad intention with each punch but in the process he ate some rigtht hands from Maidana and you could see the confidence of Maidana growing, by the end of the 5 round Ortiz was bleeding from the right eye from a left hook to the head by the end of the round Maidana was throwing right hand bombs and landed a couple which would set the tone for round 6.
The end came quickly and shockingly in round 6, Maidana came out throwing overhand rights, sideways rights, underhand rights and every kind of right you can think off, he connected early and often and didn’t stop throwing until Ortiz was laying on the canvas which ironically enough came from a left hand to the body but make no mistake it was the over hand rights that did the damage.
Ortiz was battered, bloody and bruised, and while history will say the fight was stop because of a cut in the eye anyone who saw this fight knows that Ortiz quit in this fight, his will was broken and he was looking for a way out. Tonight we learned that Ortiz is a likable fighter with many skills but the one skill needed for this sport, the one that was on display recently by Cotto (who cut by the way was worst than the one suffer by Ortiz tonight) is heart.
It’s a skill you can’t train for or develop, you either have or you don’t and if you don’t then you make the kind of statements Ortiz gave in his post fight interview, when interviewed by Kellerman he alluded to the fact that he didn’t want to go out on his back and more telling was saying he’s young and didn’t deserve to get beat up and has some thinking to do, yes you do young man and so do the boxing expert who were so eager to anoint you the next great one. Tonight we salute Marcos Maidano.

What happen to ortiz learn from cotto whit a bad cut over his eye he keep fighting that’s what u call hart I really liked ortiz but he give up not a real mexican (they never give up long live chavez)
he wont make it anywhere, He doesnt have the heart of the boxer.
Heh, Nepster, it was the tin man in Wizard of Oz that didn’t have a heart.
Its not like he got ko’d and couldn’t get up, guys can recover from that, but this fight showed something he doesnt have heart. And you can never recover from that. Hes nice kid but i dont seem him going far.
People get beaten no matter how good they are. It is the old maxim…that styles make fights. Certain tough fighters or inspired sluggers are always going to be a problem.A true warrior will make every effort to ‘switch off the lights’ of a conceited fighter…
He’s got the skill, but he’s like the lion in the Wizard of Oz. No heart. He even said he shouldn’t be getting beat up like this and it makes him think about the future. If your heart isn’t in boxing, get out now so you don’t take even more punishment.
Ortiz is a good fighter who CAN become great. I think he has what it takes the only thing that in this fight he let the excitement of the crowd the tension in the arena get to him. He was looking for that spectacular knockout that he forgot what this sport is all about, hit and don’t get hit. He got to excited and let the nerves get to him. He didn’t listen to his corner either. This should be a huge lesson for him, I think he needed this to ground him again and teach him that there’s more to boxing. Hope to see this potential great fighter again soon, lets hope he listens to his corner this time.
I thought about this fight, and after all i said above, i came to the conclusion that boxing fans who held Ortiz as THE top prospect, are not upset at Ortiz by losing, we are disappointed with him because he quit….
Ortiz quit!! No ref stopage. Thats what oscar said. Look at the fight he quit, he simple didnt want to fight anymore. The cut was not that bad. Get a heart ortiz
ortiz did nothing wrong , maidana is an awesome fighter, he is fast and powerful i would love to see him vs pacquiao but i know that wont happen, ortiz fights like vargas and bojado good fighters but not great ones.
I don’t want to sound like a Ortiz’s hater but we have to give Credit to Maidana who came to USA for first time to beat a young prospect, who by the way he’s spoke after the fight left all Mexican boxing warriors flipping up in their graves, Can somebody say FERNANDO VARGAS?(at least Vargas wasn’t a quitter!
I hope he comes back with better ring smarts!
i think alot of people had big hopes for him because he does have skills, but no heart! if he comes back the only way for him to redeem himself is by taking on another tough opponent not a tomato can, win impressively, and choose his words better! not to mention have heart!
its a shame really because people had a lot of hope for victor ortiz. But Amir Khan was brutally ko’d in the 1st round by an unknown and now 3 fights later hes fighting for a world title so perhaps its not over for ortiz but he needs to look at himself and decide if he wants it enough.
i was hoping ortiz would win and then wipe amir khan out if he also won
Great fight! I was rooting for Ortiz, I, like many, really thought this kid would be the next great Mexican-American champion but after Maidana went down 3 times and kept trying to win the fight even though at that point he was losing and badly my heart started rooting for Maidana. This is what the sport is all about, Overcoming adversity and changing fate to everything that seems logical.Thats what Maidana did.Ortiz is a great kid and has great talent and wisdom but he is not a warrior or a gladiator, someone willing to let it all hang out and not sucumb to defeat. So Victor go to college and get a degree cause boxing is not youre passion.
don’t get you guys, u say that undefeated (or previously undefeated) fighters have inflated records but then when a prospect loses to a legitimate contender, u write them off too…there’s no winning with you guys is there
He has the Skills, but what he don’t have is the most important thing in this sport, Heart. He’s gonna be stuck on the undercard for along time. He didn’t deserve to be beat up! are you kidding me! probly he forgot his a boxer….
Ortiz did not like getting hit back so he gave up you could see it in his corner after the 5th round .Ortiz was afraid to come out for the 6th.He will never be a champion.
Oritz needs to reinvent himself, do a soulsearch, if he wants to become a champion. Kotelnik robbed Maidana; Amir Khan will suffer his 2nd KO if he fights Maidana. If he stay focused, Maidana is Argentina’s upcoming Carlos Monson.
I am just laughing at the fact if Ortiz was english and was built up like that in the UK like he is in America he would get slated worse than Amir khan is now. And amir khan is much more talented than victor ortiz in every department, absolutely no comparison. The winner of Kotelnik vs Khan shud fight Maidana tbh!
if he does cpme back i hope its a rematch!!he got hurt and didnt want 2 fight anymore…he staited “i dont desurve 2 get hit like that”…lol the kid could give punishment but cant take it!.
Sounds like a excellent fight for the public. I like Ortiz hes an entertaining and good powerful boxer.
You fight somebody with a knockout record like Maidinas theres always that chance your guna get knocked out. Its boxing baby.
Im sure Oritz will be back.
amiir khan beats both
He will bounce back, he just needs to show more heart and ring craft and know how to adapt to fighters.
He needs a confidence boost so best keep him active and put him in with some mediocre opposition for a few fights..
I tell you what this was a great fight! El Chino was magical that is how to box!
Trouble was for Ortiz he let the fight descend into a brawl and that did not suit him at all it was like letting Ricky Hatton fight on the inside
I still like Ortiz though he boxed well in the main and if he can avoid a war like that i still see the guy as a world champ
Great fight.
Ortiz is a young talented fighter i have been keeping an eye on, hoping he becomes something realy special.Tonight Ortiz had his first real test in the ring and failed not only during the fight but after aswell.
The interview with Max and Ortiz had me shaking my head like…”Did he just say what i think he said”.I realy can’t word what Ortiz said but it sounded like he is not sure if he will stay in the fight game.Ortiz does have many skills but lacks the one thing he may never be able to discover in himself..Heart.
Ortiz came into the fight looking to run over Maidana, not taking his time like he should have.Ortiz clearly had an edge in the hands speed department and didnt try to use his legs more and go in and out to get off his fast combos then swing out of harms way.He just tried to storm Maidana and get a quick K.O. Ortiz should have boxed more and not get into so many wild exchanges. It Looked like Ortiz got alittle used to the quality of fighters they have been putting in front of him and didn’t give Maidana the respect he deserved. Why! i dont know.Maidana only has one loss and every win coming by K.O.all but one 26-1-(25).
Anyway,it was real good fight tonight…Congrats to Maidana for the win,he kept his composure and fought a great fight against a rising star.
As for Ortiz,i still think he has alot of tools to become a world champ but after seeing the post fight interview,i dont think Victor’s head will allow that to happen…Hope i’m wrong.
Oscar should just stop promoting. He’s turning great fighters into crap. He’s giving them too much confidence in a sport that requires more skill than confidence. Victor Ortiz is an awesome fighter but way too young to be headlining anything. His self-esteem is way down at this point. Oscar should’ve known that Victor was too young and that he needed more experience before being the main attraction. He said it himself. Instead of being smart, all he wanted to do was knock Maidana out. I guess he felt pressured since he was in front of a big crowd. Well, whatever it is, Victor didn’t live up to the hype. He wanted to reach the top by taking a shortcut through Oscar’s company.
Victor is a great boxer. I don’t want to take anything away from him. All he needed was more experience. I don’t think the timing was right. On a regular night, I feel that Victor would suck up this loss and be back on his feet again, but, as a headliner for Oscar, the guilt might just eat him alive and make him think twice about boxing.
it’s all about heart..
Thats to bad. Ortiz was winning this fight but after getting cut Ortiz basicly gave up, allowing Maidana to hit him at will. Hopefully he shakes it off and learns from this fight. If he wants to become something in this sport he will need to learn how to dig deep when needed.
wow and ortiz seemed to have the power to keep fighting it seems he didnt know how to handle being cut.
That’s why we love Boxing, Anything can happen.
I can show you a fighter with a 6-12 record that can beat a fighter with a 14-0 record.
