Hatton vs. Khan: Could Amir Be Next For Ricky?

hat4338By William Mackay: As of now, former IBF light welterweight champion Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO’s) is being quiet about what his future plans might be but he sounds as if he still plans on fighting based on his interview yesterday in which Hatton said “a comeback fight in Cardiff is not off the cards.” It’s doubtful that Hatton being the proud warrior that he is would want to go out the way he did in his last fight against Manny Pacquiao in May, losing by a 2nd round knockout at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A loss like that would be a bitter pill for anyone to have to swallow, especially a fighter like Hatton who has become accustomed to getting his own way in the ring. Lightweight Amir Khan has been mentioned as a potential opponent for Hatton in the past and appears to the main one that British fans want to see him in the ring against.

Khan, 22, would be a great opponent for Hatton, because he offers a lot of the same things that Floyd Mayweather and Pacquiao possess in the way of hand speed and power, but with a lot less sturdy chin than them. Khan would have probably been mowed down by Hatton two years ago before Ricky’s 10th round knockout loss to Mayweather.

However, the combination of age, food and drink, ballooning weight and two losses to Mayweather and Pacquiao seem to have had the effects of making Hatton a much more beatable fighter than he used to be.

While Khan may have a weak chin, as evidenced by his 1st round knockout loss to Breidis Prescott last year, but he’s evolved a great deal since then with the addition of boxing mastermind Freddie Roach, who is keeping Khan from mixing it up nearly as much as he used to do in the earlier part of his career.

Khan might be inexperienced against top flight competition, but he may not need a whole lot of experience if he can keep Hatton at the end of his jab and avoid letting Hatton get in close to land his big shots. As bad as Hatton looked against Pacquiao and Juan Lazcano, it might not take much for Khan to get him out of there.

Roach probably knows what Khan is capable of doing against Hatton and whatever Roach says, I believe him. If he says that Khan will knock Hatton out in the 1st round, I believe that is exactly what will happen, because Roach was dead on correct this last time out with his prediction of an early knockout victory for Pacquiao.

It might be kind of degrading for Hatton to fight someone like Khan due to Amir’s lack of experience, but if Khan can capture the World Boxing Association light welterweight title on July 18th, then that should be more than good enough to make him a credible enough opponent for Hatton.

Certainly, it would be a step down for Hatton, but then again he’s just had his backside handed to him for the 2nd time in the last four fights and he really can’t act as if he’s above Khan at this point. I could see an attitude from Hatton if he were winning against tough fighters like Timothy Bradley, Kendall Holt or Victor Ortiz, but the fact of the matter is that the only wins Hatton has grabbed in the past year has come against weaker opposition like Lazcano and Paulie Malignaggi, both decent fighters but not in the class of Holt or Bradley.

Hatton proved that he’s not in the league of Pacquiao and Mayweather, so now he needs to prove that he can beat a fighter like Khan. The good news is that if Hatton can’t beat him he can learn enough about himself to realize that he needs to retire from boxing and not kid himself any longer.

i think this is a great idea, this fight could generate millions for the fighters if held ant a large venue like the city of manchester stadium. I think it would be a great fight nut khan doesn’t have the power to knock ricky out. And i think any fighter has the power to knock khan out…

Andre you are a prick. Good for you. No 3 times world champion is a bum. Mayweather and Pac are two elite fighters, there was no shame in his loss. Mayweater seniors pointless training helped f@cked all either.

  • Cammy says:

Hatton should retire. Khan (maybe) & Witter (definately) would further embarace him!

Sorry guys, i’m Scottish & loved what Hatton has done to highlight the sport in our country, but he has never been on a high level!!

A strong, tough guy & in the past, he has destroyed some athletes but his boxing skills & brain are near non-exsistence!!

Sorry Ricky, retire be a promoter!!!

  • angel says:

if amir wins everyone is going to say he beat hatton when hatton was on the way out.
which if he does win will be true. so amir doesnt have alot to gain by fighting him. hatton isnt the fighter he used to be and should retire now, its over, imagine a loss to khan on his record. he’ll be in the same place barrera is now, wishing he’d retired with some dignity.

Hatton has been great for british boxing,It has now been shown that hatton can’t mix it with the best but please not khan some one whos been about abit,Khan ant done enough to breath the same air as Rikky.Last time Khan stepped it up he got knocked the f##k out.
He get nothing for this match up he will be slated what ever the result.
but do think he should have a come home fight.
    maybe Witter

hatton should fight the gobby witter next. witter just like all ingle fighters (the most over rated stable in boxing)can not handle brawlers, and will get pushed back punished then stopped inside 8 rounds, which will set up a final shot at the bigtime against a over hyped yank restoring the hitmans legacy in the process. why is it all americans are so dumb, discuss.

  • Ricki Malome says:

    Hatton should fight

Khan (and if he beats him)
Witter (and if he beats him)
Bradley / Holt (or the WBC light-welter champ at the time)

    And then retire.

  • Ukansodoff says:

I wonder if the only reason Hatton hasnt decided to retire is because of the way he went out against Pacman. It has to be playing on him, lookin at his previous defeat he took it so badly cuz he didnt perform like he should of, the same can be said against Pacman too.

I reckon he is still in turmoil about whether to or not, he wont of retired on the quiet.

Personally i want to see him fight Witter, Surely all Witters had to say must of got to Hatton, christ it got to me ive wanted to see that fight for a long time.

Have that fight and win or lose retire. Also if Witter has world titles and Hatton has nothing but a big purse to bring would Witter be as interested? Ive always though his disrepect to Hatton has always been a front to tempt him into a fight so Witter could beat him and leapfrog him and finally be in the big time.

Truth be told Witter has never had much luck in boxing and has been overlooked some in the sport.

  • Chakyun says:

I think Hatton should retire now. Loosing to a great fighters like Pacquiao and Mayweather is a bitter sweet legacy rather than loosing to a consider newcomer and inexperience Amir Khan. That will be absolutely more shamefull and a disaster! I wish people surrounding Hatton will stop giving him so much hopes about another fight. Many said nobody dictates Hatton even his own parents, well if he wants his legacy to be tainted, so be it.

  • Macca says:

To be honest I don’t see this fight happening. If Amir was to beat Ricky then he would lose a lot of fans in England. If Ricky was to beat Amir then our next British boxing hope would have two loses on his record which early on in his career would damage his reputation. I think Ricky (if he does fight on) would go for someone with a good reputation. it’s not in ricky hatton’s make-up to chose easy fights…he never would do that.
Ricky is not a shot fighter…he put on an amazing display to fights back against Paulie Malignaggi.

  • mark f says:

hatton has only lost to Pacman and Mayweather, yes some of his opponents have been a bit shot (tszyu and castillo) but can still bang, Mcghee, Tackie, Phillips and Stewart, all dangerous fighters, this sort of opponent Khan has fought only once and we al know what happened….

  • BOBBY says:

Ricky has to have another fight at least he can’t go out like he did with pac. Hes still a good boxer and he needs to get back up and show it.

BO LIMOND BEAT KHAN HE WAS DOWN FOR 11 SECONDS. ANYWAY PASCAL IS NEW WBC CHAMP WHAT A FIGHT

  • Liam Santiago says:

Hatton would enialate Khan. Dont underestimate anyone who has only bean defeated by the p4p best int the world boxers.

  • Anonymous says:

khan beat willie limond for the commonwealth

  • 2 jabs says:

    ricky hatton is complete rubbish!!!!!!!

  • Anthony says:

He should fight Witter if he beats Alexander. Then if he wins he would of held the WBC title aswell as the IBF (Twice)and the WBA Light_welter. Then he could even take on Bradley for WBO and he then would of held all the major titles.

  • Mike says:

Ummm khan might be stepping a bit far ahead of himself if he fights hatton hes going to be on the canvas in round one.

  • dontt says:

(if) khan wins and takes the wba light welterweight title then i think hatton should take the fight, win or retire.

  • mark f says:

Amir could win only at range and probably on cuts but one goos shot from Hatton would end it quick
