Why is Pacquiao Fighting on October 17th?
By Manuel Perez: For a fighter that only fought two rounds and barely got punched a half dozen times, it seems odd that Manny Pacquiao has decided to sit out of boxing until October 17th. That’s five long months which is an extraordinary amount of time for a fighter that fought only two measly rounds.
I’m sure it’s possible, but like the catch weight that Pacquiao’s team have been waiving in fronting of the eyes of Miguel Cotto and Shane Mosley, it puts Pacquiao’s next opponent at a disadvantage. With only three months to prepare for a fight with Pacquiao it’s hardly enough time to get in enough training tome to do justice to a fight against Pacquaio.
More than likely the Marquez-Mayweather bout will be a grueling with a lot of hard exchanges in the fight. Usually, a fighter needs at least a minimum of a couple of months off before starting training after a tough bout like the one that Mayweather and Marquez are about to embark on.
With only three months off between the July 18th Marquez-Mayweather bout and the October 17th date that Pacquiao is planning on fighting again, that doesn’t leave nearly enough time for the winner of the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao bout to train for a fight with Pacquiao.
I’d like to think that this is just a coincidence but knowing how Freddie Roach likes to get an extra edge over his opponents, I can see this also something that could very well have been done for a strategic benefit for Pacquiao.
If Manny can fight a beat up, under trained Mayweather or Marquez then it gives Pacquiao a much better chance at beating them if they were given a full four months of training and rest before a fight with him. But then again, it could be that Pacquiao and his team aren’t in a hurry to fight the Mayweather-Marquez fight, knowing how tough the fight will be for Pacquiao style wise.
The longer Pacquiao waits to fight the winner, the older Mayweather and Marquez get. Pacquiao’s only 30, so he can effectively wait out the 35-year-old Marquez and 32-year-old Mayweather Jr. until they have aged a little bit more to the point where they’re easier dealt with.
Another possible reason for Pacquiao not to fight Mayweather or Marquez now is that Pacquiao is rotten at fighting counter punchers, and Marquez and Mayweather are the best in the business in the department. So by taking more time off before fighting them, Pacquiao would have more time to figure out how to fight counter punchers a little bit better.
I doubt that any amount of training will help Pacquiao achieve that because he’s too dialed into being the one that does the attacking in his fights and both Mayweather and Marquez feast on opponents that come to them.

Manny Pacman vs. Edwin Valero on Oct 17 in a fight of p4p at the 135 weight class. Manny and Freddie is not running from Edwin Valero. Edwin is next so Manny is you ready.
Manny has NEVER EVER fought at 147 IN HIS LIFE.
He weighed in for the Oscar fight at 142.
On fight night, he was 146.
Mosley and Cotto weigh in at 147 and have come in on fight night as high as 160.
And Manuelita, you’re objecting to the catchweight?
Marquez lost last time – though it was close.
First time – one of the judges messed upn his scoring – Jerry Roth – scored the first round 10-7 rather than 10-6 to Manny. With the extra point Manny would have won.
Manny can’t be bothered to beat Marquez AGAIN because he’s already beaten him TWICE.
Gerry- how could you say that Pac would get destroyed by Marquez if they do fight? Pac and Marquez DID fight and guess who kissed the canvas 4 times? I understand that the fight was close, and I agree, that Marquez did outbox Pac in the first fight, but his ass did hit the canvas 3 times and if it wasn’t for the judging error, then Pac would be 2-0 against Marquez! You’re an idiot to say he would get destroyed. Marquez’s last two fights were against a 37 year old Casamayor (37! OLDER THAN ODLH) and a light hitting Juan Diaz. Fair enough to say it would be a great fight to see Pac Marquez 3, but to say Pac would get destroyed, you must be Ms. Manuela Perez’s lover. Floyd on the other hand, as much as I hate him, I think he would give Pac problems, but I doubt Floyd himself has the balls to fight Pac. For anyone who doesn’t think that Floyd puts his “0″ over anything else and thinks that he does fight the best, watch his interview with Brian Kenny. Floyd ducks questions better than he ducks punches.
1. Pacquiao accepted a fight with De La Hoya where De La Hoya was 4 inches taller and a 6 inch reach advantage.
2. Pacquiao was fighting a man that was fighting at 154 while he was only 8 month before only fighting at 130 pounds. Didn’t that seem fair for the Pac haters.
3. Everybody including the writer of this article said that Pacquiao would get destroyed believing that De La Hoya would come in at 160 on fight night with the reach and height advantage. Lets see Pacquiao takes on a guy that has fought at middle weight when he just finished fighting at 130 pound and he is a coward?
4. If you check the compubox analysis for the Pacquiao Marquez fight you will find out that Pacquiao won more rounds than Marquez. Watch the fight again especially the 11th round which everyone gave to Marquez and you will see that most of Marquez’s shots were blocked in the 11th round as supported by compubox.
5. If you watch the Pacquiao Marquez fight you will see that Marquez fights like a man that is terrified of getting knock out – always very defensive counter punching backing up – certainly not the same forward fighting fighter that fought Barrera, Diaz or Casamayor. All the Pac haters watch that fight and tell me who is the beast in the fight.
6. The next time Marquez fights Pacquiao at 140 he will get knocked out. While avoiding the left hand all through the fight the new always improving Pacquiao right hand will find its mark and then you quys will change your story and say that Pacquiao waited until Marquez got old and that is why he won the fight.
Pacman started out at 108 pounds, Cotto/Mosley have been campaigning there whole career from 140 upwards, so, in summary, Pacman has gone up 10 weights, Cotto/Mosley have gone up 2-3 weights, who has accomplished more??
And as mentioned, if Pacman is so bad, why are Cotto/Mosley calling out a smaller man? Of course they will fancy there chances @ 147 and why not? They are both very good, strong fighters.
Why dont you criticise Cotto/Mosley for not moving up and fighting Williams! Oh but you dont consider that because you are so hell bent on having a go at Pacman you stupid moron!
You still cannot accept Pacman did JMM and stopped both Hatton & DLH in a far better way then Mayweather could of ever hope to!
I can’t understands why “me” can’t accept that Packman is the best Fighter of this generation, that he let JMM kiss the canvass 4 times, and let OSCAR retire and Hatton motionless for 5 minutes, WHY???. hmn… maube I am stupid, I can’t understand the logic, maybe I had NO eyes, brain or just my IQ is below zero… I should open my eyes… and listen and read. but am a moron.. simple… am stupid…
As I have said in the previous Pac hating article, both Cotto and Mosley want Pac, they are doing all the talking, they have openly said they wanted the winner of Pac vs Hatton. Pac has every right to demand a catch weight, if Pac was chasing them then he would have to step up, but he’s not.
Who is criticizing Cotto and Mosley for chasing a lighter fighter?
JMM is a good fighter, but if you are going to call Pac one dimensional, then what is JMM for being unable to beat him? Idiot!!
I’m already hearing excuses from pac-haters… haha WOW. Pac-haters are giving themselves a backup plan should Pac win the fight against PBF or JMM. WOW Are you guys serious? Please tell me you are joking. Pac fought a life & death fight with JMM in March then jumped up a weight class to fight David Diaz in June & TKO’d the guy. Only 3 months apart. Oh but wait, you haters are gonna say, “Diaz was easy.” You guys are right. But isn’t that the same thing you guys are saying about Pac–that he’s easy? “Pac is so one dimensional he would get murdered by PBF and JMM.” So why all the concern if he’s so overrated? Let me help answer that for you guys…UHHH because Pac is a death threat and he would be doing all the murdering. AM I RIGHT OR AM I JUST DAMM RIGHT? Please write back. I’m waiting to hear more excuses from the PAC-HATERS.
One dimensional? Funny. It seems that a one dimensional fighter would get knocked down by the same left hand 4 times. If Marquez wasn’t a one dimensional fighter, don’t you think he’d learn his lesson by now and not get knocked down again by the same left hand that made him kiss the canvas. Nice one Gerry! Twice beat by Marquez? Even nicer. Man, JMM must be a very nice guy to give Pacquiao his belt after beating Pacquiao. I guess Pacquiao is not as nice. He has a tendency to keep his belts. Oscar? A person we came to admire? Who the hell is we? How can you admire Oscar, a person who asked a much smaller boxer to gain 12 pounds to fight him? How can you admire a moron who doesn’t listen to his own business partners when they tell him to keep jabbing. How can you admire a moron who no longer cares about one of his fighters after he loses? How can you admire a moron who blames his trainer for the loss when he is the one who can’t follow a game plan? Oscar did nothing but beat Vargas. He had 6 big fights and lost them all. Let me guess. Even though the judges officially stated that he lost the fights, I bet you, Gerry, believe that he won all those fights. The only thing Oscar has done is lose his fans. Come on, who takes Oscar seriously by now? Even all his fans think he’s a jinx. He screwed up by saying that Marquez will beat Floyd, probably the same way he said that Hatton was going to beat Pacquiao. Full strength De la hoya? That guy never had any strength. The only thing he ever had was a jab. No matter what weight class he was in, that’s all he had. But like a moron, he stopped jabbing against Trinidad and Mayweather and lost two of his biggest fights. He couldn’t even jab against Pacquiao. Weight-drained or not, Pacquiao neutralized his jab. Therefore, no matter what weight he would’ve come in, he had no jab. Come to think of it, if I knew I was going to lose to a better fighter, I’d come up with an excuse for my loss. It’s obvious De la hoya knew he was going to lose, therefore, he came in weight-drained so he can have an excuse. Moron! Pacquiao fought De la hoya at 147 to prove Roach’s point. Oscar could no longer pull the trigger. Roach is not stupid. He knows that Mosley and Cotto can still pull the trigger. Just like Pacquiao can pull the trigger at 140. Let me turn it around and ask why Mosley or Cotto don’t challenge Pacquiao at 140. It’s because they too are not stupid. They know Pacquiao can pull the trigger at 140. That’s why there’s a catch weight. I swear, there are so many morons leaving comments here. Why do you think Marquez asked Mayweather to fight at a catch weight? It’s because he’s not stupid. He knows that Mayweather is a threat at 147. Does that make Marquez a chicken sh#t for doing the same thing as what Pacquiao is doing? If you complain about Pacquiao asking for a catch weight, don’t be a hypocrite about Marquez.
seems like people forgot he fought the much bigger oscar at 147 … why wont he fight Cotto or Mosley at 147 too? Because Roach and Pacquiao team knows that they cant beat a full strength Cotto or Mosley – just like they couldnt have beat a full strength de la hoya.
Manny-acs will be proven wrong, thank you Manuel for being the only boxing journalist able to see past his explosiveness and see he is a one dimensional fighter who was twice beat by Marquez and will get destroyed by Marquez or Mayweather when they do fight. Too bad he wont be seeing either soon (or at least not a full-strength version of either) – only reason he beat de la hoya is cause he was an overtrained and dehydrated version of the boxer we came to admire. Pacquiao is fast, but will get destroyed – DESTROYED – by Cotto or Mosley even at a catch weight provided they can make it, and will get outboxed by a Mayweather or outfought by a Marquez. Only fight Pacquiao wins amongst names thrown around is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, even then only at a catchweight where Jr is depleted himself.
I believe manny is a great fighter and your just so bias when it comes to him, however i dont like his catch weight, as it will be hard for mosley, cotto and mayweather to reach it.
It is also hard for manny to go up because freddy roach believes he has reached his peak weight. And if manny does fight in 5 months time it nothing compared to mayweathers 2 years semi retirement, pretecting himself from big names like mosley and cotto.
Regardless of how many rounds he fought, he still had to train just as hard. That’s why.
Or maybe Pacquiao is looking into his political career and wants more time off before the end of the year. You should call this article “Why I don’t like Pacquiao” here are my biased reasons.
