Vitali Klitschko vs. Arreola Next?

vitali754535By Jim Dower: Although the World Boxing Council wants WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs) to defend his title against forty-year-old Oleg Maskaev next, Vitali instead is looking to defend his title against his WBC number #1 challenger undefeated Chris Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs) instead. Vitali is reportedly resisting having to fight Maskaev, since Vitali already defended his title against his number #1 mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Gomez in March, stopping him in the 9th round in Germany.

In an interview at East Side Boxing today by James Slater, Arreola said that “It’s close,” when asked about fighting Vitali. It looks as if the only thing that can prevent this fight from going forward is if the WBC somehow throws a wrench in it and stops it. However, it seems rather strange why they’re so persistent in Klitschko fighting Maskaev because the defense would mean little at this point in Maskaev’s career, attracting few boxing fans and getting little attention in the media.

Maskaev may have been a halfway decent fighter at one time 4-10 years ago, but Maskaev has faded in the past three years and isn’t the same fighter he once was. Maskaev lost his WBC heavyweight title in a 6th round stoppage defeat at the hands of Samuel Peter in March 2008.

Vitali, in turn, came back from a four year retirement last year in 2008 to stop Peter in the 8th round, taking his WBC title from him. Vitali was immediately looking to get some big named opponents such as Nikolay Valuev and David Haye to fight in his next bout, but was forced to defend his title against Gomez in what turned out to be a rather sloppy fight with little real action.

Now, Vitali, 37, wants to try and capitalize on his missed time away from boxing by getting the biggest fights he can find, like Arreola or Haye. Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali’s little brother who holds both the IBF and WBO heavyweight titles, gets the first shot at Haye after winning a coin toss between the two brothers.

Should Wladimir end losing to Haye, then Vitali would get the next crack at fighting Haye. In the meantime, Vitali wants to stay busy by fighting the best opponent he can find and in choosing Arreola, arguably the most popular heavyweight in the United States at this time, Vitali can’t go wrong.

Arreola, 6’4″ 250 pounds, is a powerful heavyweight with a fighting style that is very aggressive and hard to beat due to Arreola huge punching power. Because of his power, size and the constant pressure he puts on his opponents, Arreola tends to take his opponents very quickly.

He does have a problem with his chin, however, as Arreola was knocked down in his fight with Travis Walker and hurt a couple of times in his fight with Jameel McCline recently. That may give Vitali his best chance of winning, because if he lets Arreola stick around too long, the young Mexican heavyweight could end up wearing Vitali down and taking him out.

the way i see it in KLitchko vs Arreola GOOD LUCK to BOTH, regardless of Vitaliy’s superiority. Also, HAye is the bigest douce for rejecting to fight both klitchkos, i hope haye loses against valuev!

  • Mr. Mean 1 says:

The fact is that fight fans are sick and tired of the robotic Klitschko Brothers! We need someone to bring back some spark back to the heavyweight division. I think Chris Arreola and hopefully David Haye have that spark were desperately looking for.
As for the weight Problem? Well I think that if he stays at 250 or under Who cares! This is Boxing not a Body Builders or Chip and Dales Show!
The bottom line is that Chris Arreola has the punchers chance in winning this Fight! So why count out the undefeated american challenger?

  • Scott D says:

Arreola is 6’4 and 250 lbs of blubber, Vitali’s dimensions are similar but he is solid!

Should this fight happen, it will make decent viewing, both are strong, powerful and have good chins, speed goes to Vitali but id say hunger (not just for food) goes to Arreola.

  • arturo m says:

areolla is better off fighting kimbo slice , butterbean or mike tyson, he has no real chance with vitali

  • Ukansodoff says:

Areolla is ranked well, is unbeaten and comes with a decent reputation. He also pulls a decent crowd. I tihnk its the most logic of opponants for Vitali.

I also think hes overhyped and overweight. The fat ones seem to be able to fight the smaller heavys and win they also can fight other fat ones even though its painfully dull but they struggle against the giants that also train hard and have skills. Which is what you have in the Klitchko brothers.

Areolla will be beaten, Vitalis too big to overpower when you have serious stamina issues. But you gotta be in it to win it and your aim is to fight for a world title, prefferbly the WBC one. So good luck to him i say.

  • SimonH says:

Well i was just asking a question so thank you for your answer. I rate his punching, just not his chin. He is a bit of a fat slob. All i know is David Haye fights Wladimir Klitschko which is more than where Arreola is at the moment. But sure…

  • Adam says:

No Simon you moron. Please know what your talking about before you post. Arreola is 100% red blooded American born and raised in America.Where not tryin to adopt anybody as our own.Don’t get all frustrated that we have a Heavyweight contender and all you have is a Heavyweight wannabe. It’s just my opinion that Arreola is a fat slob and has no dedication to boxing. He’s overrated in my book but he’s still better than anything your putting out.

  • Lee says:

I wish him all the best -I’ve watched a few interviews with him and he seems a really decent guy. Id love him to beat vitali and Haye to beat wlad then face eachother – now that would be an exciting change to the heavyweight division

  • SimonH says:

Is Arreola a mexican america are trying to adopt as their saviour of the heavyweight division?

  • Jack P says:

“the young Mexican heavyweight could end up wearing Vitali down and taking him out.”

Are you for real? On what planet would this happen?! Arreola has no stamina and tires in the first few rounds, if he doesnt get a knockout early on (which against Vitalis steel jaw willl be near impossible) he is screwed. Dont be fooled by Vitalis age either, the man still sprints 12 x 800m with a minute break between each sprint…does that sound like a man who can be worn down by an overweight and lazy slob?

  • cutman says:

Yes! I would pay to watch the chubby Mexican get his sleeping pill at the fists of Vitali…

  • JimmyWilde says:

YER LETS SEE ANOTHER AMERICAN HOPE GET KNOCKED OUT

  • Adam says:

Just another Klitschko that’s gonna dominate.Arreola is a fat slob and isn’t even on the same level as either Klitschko.Arreola belongs in the ring with the other second tier boxer David Haye. They can both talk about how they got KO’d by the Klitschko Brothers.

  • mombo says:

ok, let’s do this one. why not? there’s not much else out there at heavy.

    vitali ko’s a tiring arreola in 6.

  • Johnson says:

Good luck to Arreola if this happens, don’t see him winning but will cheer for him (even though he is a yank) as long as someone ends the reign of the ukrainian jab-robots!! Lets also hope he doesn’t have to sign a 5 match rematch clause or something ridiculous like that!
