Hatton vs. the Best Light Welterweights in the World

By Scott Gilfoid: We now know that Ricky Hatton wasn’t in the same league as Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr., both of whom took Hatton out without too much fuss. However, I wonder how Hatton would do against one of the top light welterweights in the division. Supposedly, Hatton had a rough camp with his trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. and things didn’t go smoothly, enough so that his father Ray Hatton felt that Ricky would have been better off had he pulled out of the fight.

Okay, I’ll buy that excuse and accept it as a good reason for Hatton’s 2nd round blowout of Pacquiao. So, forgetting completely about Hatton deeply humiliating loss to Pacquiao, could Hatton beat the top light welterweights in the division? I’m referring to Timothy Bradley, Kendall Holt, Victor Ortiz, Ricardo Torres and Junior Witter. If the loss to Pacquiao was caused in part because of training camp woes, then Hatton should at least be good enough to still beat these guys, right?

Below, I’ve listed the fighters that Hatton needs to be concerned with if he decides to keep fight and if he opts to return to the light welterweight division rather than hand picking someone like lightweight Michael Katsidis as his next opponent.

Timothy Bradley: this is a nightmare opponent for a fighter like Hatton, both strong, fast and young. Bradley would very likely knock Hatton out as easily as Pacquiao did. Bradley is a complete fighter, with excellent boxing skills, power and the ability to move well. Bradley can fight well on the outside or the inside, it doesn’t matter which.

I see Bradley as being too fast for the one-dimensional Hatton, and would very likely catch Hatton with a big right hand early on and knock him out. Prediction: Bradley by 3rd round TKO.

Ricardo Torres: A former World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion before losing it in a 1st round head butt knockout loss to Kendall Holt in 2008. Torres has better power and much better speed than Hatton. Torres may have issues with his stamina and occasionally with his chin.

However, I doubt that Hatton would last long enough to test Torres’s stamina or chin, because Hatton would get raked with right hands in the 1st and 2nd round, and very likely put into a coma before long. Prediction: Torres by 2nd round KO.

Junior Witter: this is one of the fighters that has been chasing Hatton for the past few years without any luck. It’s shocking that Hatton refused to fight Witter all these years, because Witter has clearly been one of the most talented fighters in the light welterweight division for the past five or so years now.

Never the less, Witter would be a tough opponent for Hatton, like a poor man’s Floyd Mayweather Jr. Hatton was over matched against Mayweather, picked off with short punches and dominated with short, accurate punches from Floyd.

I expect Witter to be able to do the same, staying away from Hatton and picking him off like a matador when Hatton comes rushing in with his hands down. Prediction: Witter by 11th round TKO.

Kendall Holt: Hatton might have a chance in if he had the chin, but sadly, I don’t see Ricky as having a sturdy enough chin to survive more than a couple of rounds with Holt. This is another fight where Hatton would be badly hurt and knocked unconscious from a fast shot that he never sees.

Although I think Hatton could possibly make it to the 2nd round, my thoughts are Hatton would probably be knocked completely out in the 1st round and likely taken from the ring on a stretcher. It’s not that Holt is a great fighter, because he has a weak chin of his own, but rather Hatton’s glass jaw being too weak, his reactions being too slow and his defense being too poor to last for more than minute or two in the 1st round. Prediction: Holt by 1st round KO.

Victor Ortiz: of the top light welterweights, Ortiz is the one fighter that I think Hatton is still good enough to beat. Ortiz has good power, but he’s not real fast and you can see his shots coming. He’s been put in with some decent fighters, but no one with Hatton’s talent. Ortiz has already been dropped once before in his career by Dairo Esalas last year in May.

I doubt that Hatton would knock him down, but it’s possible. Ortiz gets hit a lot and isn’t really a champion level fighter at this point in my estimation. Prediction: Hatton by 12-round decision.

More brain dead no knowledge staunch hatton supporters still not woken up. The two elite class fighters hatton faced destroyed him…the others were old over the hill or just simply average and shot fighters.

The rest…hatton has never given them a chance to fight him..Ricky hatton has never once beaten a top world class hardhitting young contender in his prime….SO WHERE IS THE EVIDENCE THAT HE CAN BEAT ALL THESE NAMES?

one last thing..to fight one more time against a lightweight or anyone else other than one of the young lightwelterweight champions or top contenders will only confirm to everyone with half a brain that hatton was a total cherry picking cop out and never at all deserved to be considered the best in the division. Just an average fighter with a extraordinary fanbase and thats what got him where he is

Hatton went 10 rounds with Mayweather before pretty much punching himself out, it was hardly an easy night for Mayweather jnr, i mean dancing non stop for 30mins while somebody is swinging at you cant be considered easy!!!!

Pac destroyed Hatton, no other way of putting it, but the “names” you have mentioned are nothing special. Bradley vs Holt showed everybody exactly how much power each possessed, and its hardly a worry, to anybody!! Witter failed at world level against Bradley and Ortiz is still young.

My concern with Hatton is how much he can take, both physically and mentally. Twice he has gone up against top top level fighters and twice lost via KO. Should he continue, under a new trainer who can change him, then unifying the division will re-open the doors to the super fights, is Hatton capable? I dont know.

im not too interested in seeing hatton fight witter,i think it would be one sided fight, and witter would get hammered,on the flip side,it would probly sell out manchester, stadium, and shut witter up for good, cant see hatton giving witter the opportunity as theres bad blood, and hatton can find a more credibly opponent even after this loss,

Thanks for the info Mr. James Hughes! Just trying to prove that Victor Ortiz is legitimate and a force to be reckoned with. Arnaoutis went the distance with two world champions and Ortiz just ran over him so Scott the guy at the bottom of your list in my opinion will be the best in the division just wait and see. And for the record i am not mexican.BORICUA 100%!

To be honest with you mate I don’t agree with the statement that Mayweather dealt with Hatton without too much fuss. Ricky was only one point down going into the 9th round, after the point deduction. Hatton was on a par with Mayweather until he lost his head. Most of you might not agree but oh well thats my opinion

Victor Ortiz’s last opponent was Mike Arnaoutis – a style and speed based boxer who lacks strength and punching power when put up against top level opposition. Arnaoutis was 21-2-2 going into the fight, having only lost to Ricardo Torres (SD) and Kendall Holt (UD – not just 10 rounds). One of his two draws was earlier in his career against Juan Urango (who was only 13-0 himself at the time).

Hatton has never ducked anyone with a big name. Witter was put down by Bradley who has almost zero punchin power on the world stage. No one would want to watch a fight with Witter. Bradely would be smothered and beaten unanimously at worst. Holt and Ortiz are both knocked out by Hatton. He has been a great fighter and will leave a legacy that means his name will last for many years.

If Hatton is to keep on fighting with a cause then these are the people hes guna have to look at facing.

His other option is to look for other big money fights but im not sure who, Pacman or Mayweather rematches are out of the question really, the defeats were decicive leavin no ifs and buts to ponder.

Maybe the top Lightweights could fight him but hey would have to move up in weight and Marquez is the only really interesting one for me.

If he did continue on his Lightwelter path i feel hes better than all the names mentioned. But then at the moment im worried about how damaged his confidence is cuz hes the type to let it affect him in the ring.

Personally i think hes better off retiring. Hes been there, done that and hes also been privilaged enough to step in with the real cream of the crop, came up short no doubt but he earnt his shot and fair play.

Hatton is a nobody who WAS somebody. Ever since he got took to school by mayweather jr he has not been himself! He nearly got knocked out by lazcano and beat an overly hyped malignaggi and lost to manny looking ridiculous! I understand why scott thinks ricky would get knocked out by most light welters. Hatton is a shadow of his former self!

  • THE GOLDEN FAN says:

I think you just underestimated a very good fighter in Victor Ortiz. None of the other fighters will likely get better but Ortiz is only what 22 years old. Did you see his last fight? If anybody can write who he fought last time and his bio i will apreciate cause right know i can’t remember. But i know he only had one defeat and he went 10 rounds with Kendall Holt.

Witter is not in the same league as Hatton.

  • leo tabaong says:

i agree to test again the ability of hatton in case he wants a comeback fight he must face one of those guys mention…

  • mimi says:

you seem to be very against Hatton, Hatton would beat witter, torres and Holt.

  • Apol says:

Hatton need to change his fighting style before go back to the ring.power is not the ist factor to win the fight.

  • Kel says:

Hatton should re group and fight again.
