Estrada Destroys Jones

estrada33By Jim Dower: In his typical manner, unbeaten super middleweight prospect Shawn Estrada (6-0, 6 KOs) bum rushed his over-matched opponent Cory Jones (5-6-1) in the 1st round on Saturday night at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. Estrada, a 2008 Olympian for the United States amateur team, jumped all over Jones from the start, flinging power shots with both hands and not showing any semblance of defense as he hurriedly went about his business of trying to knockout his ritually served cannon fodder opponent.

Sure, enough Estrada’s all out attack paid off when he was able to knock Jones down with a big right hand to the head. Jones, now badly hurt got up, but Estrada opened up with a flurry of shots causing the referee to come to the rescue of Jones and stop the bout at 1:31 of the round.

Estrada, like usual, showed little in the way of form and seemed to just be throwing big shots without concern about protecting himself. In contrast to unbeaten 2004 Olympic Gold Medal winner Andre Ward, who was fighting on the card against Edison Miranda, Estrada looked like an amateur, showing much less skill and finesse than Ward.

Also on the card, undefeated junior lightweight prospect Mel Crossty (3-0-1, 1 KOs) and Jaime Rodriguez (4-4-3, 2 KOs) fought to disappointing four round majority draw, in a fight that left both fighters disappointed with the outcome. The final judges’ scores were 39-37 for Crossty and 38-38, and 38-38.
