News – Edwin Valero vs. Breidis Prescott on July 25th!
By Manuel Perez: According to The Ring, World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight champion Edwin Valero (25-0, 25 KOs) is reportedly nearing completion of an agreement to fight number #4 ranked #WBO lightweight contender Breidis Prescott (21-0, 18 KOs) on July 25th in Mexico. On the same card with be undefeated light middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (39-0-1, 29 KOs) against a still to be determined opponent.
Valero, 27, recently defeated 39-year-old Antonio Pitalua in a 2nd round TKO on April 4th in Austin, Texas. Valero looked like nothing special in the first round, and fought standing straight up, showing poor hand speed and equally bad defense. There was little action in the round to speak of with Pitalua landing the better shots. In the 2nd, Valero caught Pitalua with a right hook at the start of the round and put him down.
It wasn’t a huge shot, but instead one that Pitalua wasn’t expecting. However, the 39-year-old was badly hurt after he got up and was hardly in the condition to defend himself from any punches. Valero, not to let the opportunity got to waste, jumped immediately all over Pitalua, landing a flurry of shots to put 40ish Pitalua down for the count.
It wasn’t an impressive win, however, because of Pitalua’s advanced age and how because of how average Valero looked in the opening round. The punch that hurt Pitalua, like I said, wasn’t that big of a shot. He just didn’t see it coming at him.
Sad to say, Pitalua is probably Valero’s best opponent during his entire seven year pro career, with many of them being C-class fighters. Although Valero is hyped badly because of his 25 wins with 25 knockouts, his record would likely be duplicated by many other lightweights in the division if they had been fortunate to face the same lower level fighters that Valero has built his highly inflated record on.
It’s sad, because many of the more gullible, unknowing boxing fans see his record and consider it prove that Valero is perhaps the top guy in the lightweight division, when in reality he may not even be as good as some of the bottom 10 fighters like Urban Antillon.
Prescott, 25, from Colombia, shocked the boxing world by knocking out overhyped British lightweight Amir Khan in the 1st round in September 2008. Prescott nearly decapitated Khan with a huge left hook that sent Khan down moments into the fight.
Prescott would drop Khan again with another huge left hook to the head, causing the fight to be stopped at 0:54 of the 1st round. Prescott hasn’t had much interest from Khan in a rematch, and that’s understandable given how badly Prescott beat him.
Most recently, Prescott defeated Humberto Toledo by a 10th round disqualification in February. Although Prescott didn’t get the knockout, he landed devastating shots for 10 rounds and it’s credit to Toledo’s solid chin that he was able to take the shots.
I see Prescott as being a much better fighter than Valero. Prescott is a much more powerful puncher, has fought better fighters and is a lot bigger than the small 5’6” Valero compared to the 5’11” Prescott. Honestly, this is going to be a huge mismatch by the time it’s over, and unless Valero’s promoter steps in to stop the fight from going forward, I see Prescott knocking Valero out within three or four rounds. Believe me, Prescott is the real deal.

pchad…calzaghe didnt avoid anyone!!! they avoided him!!! calzaghe is an absolute legend…and one day amir khan will also be a legend. but only if he has the rematch with prescott first!!!
I wish this fight were on TV. Maybe ESPN will pick it up, that would be great for the sport. I think this will be fight of the year in Ring Mag. Thanks.
Hi Manuel Perez… What do you mean “Pitalua wasn’t expecting the Valero’s shot”? or “He just didn’t see it coming at him”?.
Do you think that Khan saw the Prescott shot? …Of course they both didn’t expecting the hit because Valero and Prescott are to fast to predict what they are going to do.
Also you say “Pitalua is probably Valero’s best opponent” and “Valero has built his highly inflated record on”… Let me tell you that the same thing said the Panamá experts when his Super Featherweight Title champion Vicente”El Loco” Mosquera defended the title vs Valero. I hardly recommend you that fight, maybe you can change your mind.
Finaly, I thing Valero will KO Prescott in 3 round.
i have been watching boxing for 50 years now, i believe prescott is a good fighter…but valero has not proved himself yet,and presscot has not been truly tested either….i believe valero is more powerfull,iv watched both….and everyones chin is different no matter how good the boxer is,valero has ko’d every1 he has faced..valero is southpaw and can fight to the body..his left hand will be a problem for prescott..and the right hook to the body
Valeros looping right after throwing the sraight LEFT leaves him open.Prescott can nail him with left hooks all day.
Prescott moves left and that is good after he throws the right hand where Valero cannot come over the top with his own left.Valeros looping right after throwing the straight right leaves him open.I see Prescott knocking him out.
$ everyones info Valero has a really good amateur record.
It looks like hes got no deffense but dats his style . He leads da fight like in a dance.
If he needs 2 block some shots he would do it.
(mal fisicamente)…
breidis prescott will win this fight versus edwin valero!
Can’t believe people saying its his race for being criticise on here, i don’t care if he’s red black or sky blue pink if he’s good boxer I’ll give him credit, he has got fast hand speed but is poor defensively has poor punch resistant to put it mildly i loved NAZS he was “flashy” he ran his mouth off but could back it up any body who thinks not needs to look at his amature and pro career,Khan needs to stop making comment like I’m a great champion me I’ll fight anybody me that’s what great champions do then keeps fighting smaller light punching opponents i watch boxing on a world level and its great if he’s a Brit but at the end of the day khan would not live with the level that diaz and marques fought at recently he would get blasted out inside of three
rounds and them who keep saying only 22 year of age, Natural talent shine thought and i,m afraid his level is in the shadows compared with red hot divisions out there.
i cant beleive everyone is saying valero will get knocked out before kahn he should of lost the split decision. he is good and has a huge punch but he is just as wild as valero most of the time look at the kahn fight. i think i have seen what prescot has to offer but with valero i think he will up his level and show no one can touch him.
race has nothing to do with it u jackass, im white yet prefer Witter to Hatton and my favourite two boxers growing up were Prince Naz (does he come under that word you used for Khan?) and Nigel Benn
Both these fighters deserve a title shot more than Amir Khan
I also want to add that Valero is very similiar to Pipino Cuevas. Except that Cuevas’ record was not very good, and Edwin Valero looks like he is superman with his record.
Hey Superman. Get ready to face your cryptonite in Breidis Prescott.
I am going with the underdog Prescott by 2nd round knock out. This will be identical to Thomas Hearn’s 2nd round kos over Roberto Duran Sr and Pipino Cuevas Sr.
Prescott and Paul Williams are 2 of my favorite fighters. And they both resemble Thomas Hearns.
Rex Giacoma get a grip man prescott is not british hes from peurto rico or some where like that and anyway hatton is no joke.
Firstly Khan is fighting for the light-welterweight championship as he will get destroyed by Marquez and Valero, i am british and he is simply doing a joe calzaghe and dodging dangerous fighter in his weight class and waiting in till they are either aged or retired to fight for the lightwieght belts. These tactics will not get Khan respect in the eyes of boxing fans, unlike de la hoya for example who always faught the best no matter what.Thats why he is a legend.
Prescott is the real deal and i think he will unify the division after he Knocks out Valero in under 6 rounds. Marquez is no spring chicken any more, Khan will never have a rematch with presscot as he will get destroyed once again. Prescott could be the next Tommy Hearns if he gets a decent manager behind him.
i think valero will win. if setanta dont get the fight i will hurt steve bunce. both on there way, we will see who will be the future star
ukansodoff, sorry about the “bowling pin” was rushing on my way out but i think people will get my meaning.
Both are big puncher but I can see Prescott wining this one, he is two tall for Valero and I can see him wering him down and stopping in the mid to late rounds.
brilliant matchmaking, will be nothing short of entertaining, let the winner fight Katsidas, and keep the punches flying!
I am not a Khan fan but to give him is dues the trainer at the time of the prescott fight wasnt exactly good he was an ametuer coach what did he really no about pro boxing i think the out come would be differant now that he is with freddie roach. As for prescott fighting for a world title before the Khan fight no one had heard of him and you people say he should be fighting for a world title shouldnt he be proving him self within the division a bit more and before its said i dont agree with Khan fighting for a title at light weilter either, its all given to much these days its more about money than the sport.
Prescott is a dope just like his countryman Hatton.
i hope this 1 gets on UK telly.
Not a great deal of skill on show but knockout power galore. Especially from Valero.
Valero has no defence what so ever and Prescott isnt too hard to hit either.
If this goes the distance i will sell my mothers legs on ebay.
Valero is so much fun to watch i have to admit.
Im glad to see that youve pointed out Valeros mediocre opposition and his poor defense . This is definitely one i can see Prescott winning. Both fighters have ko power but Prescott has the all important reach and height advantage and i cant see Valero bullying his way to the inside where Prescott seems to have difficulties . Valeros tendency to stick his chin out will see him get gaught often by the columbians straights and looping left hands which can only mean lights out for him and the derailment of his hype train.
ok correct me if im wrong lads but…Prescott is undefeated and beat Khan..so why is Khan fighting for a title and Prescott is not???
