Hatton-Pacquiao: Size Matters!

hatton3444534By Jack Herbert: Approximately 11ET on May 2nd, Ricky Hatton and Manny Pacquiao will be facing each other in the centre of the ring in the MGM grand in Las Vegas in without doubt the most exciting fight of the year. Unfortunately in our sport of boxing, the sport I love so much the hype machine and the constant building up and knocking down of boxers is something that goes unnoticed by most boxing fans that will check in to watch the biggest fight of the year.

These same fans probably couldn’t tell you who Juan Manuel Lopez is or James Kirkland. They buy into the Pacquiao-Hatton 24/7 thing, which I have to admit would have my mother buying the fight if she watched it. What these 24/7 shows fail to tell you is that Ricky Hatton never really stood a chance against Floyd at 147. As for De la Hoya and Pacman, well it seems Freddie Roach was the only one that knew Manny was going to eat him alive.

I saw some punch stats from that fight and apparently De La Hoya had landed 83 punches in 8 rounds, and which is only ten punches per round. I saw an interview with Roach on YouTube the other day and they asked if Pacman were to win would Pacquiao move up to welterweight to take on the likes of Cotto, Mosley and Mayweather. Roach said without question that Pacquiao would be going nowhere near 147 again.

That suggests to me that he knows he is taking a serious risk letting Pacquiao in with the biggest light welter in the world on Saturday night. Maybe this is why Manny took so long to sign the contract, maybe this is why Freddy is making sure on the Pacquiao-Hatton 24/7 episodes footage is coming through of Manny knocking out his sparring partners and maybe this is why Freddy is saying it’s going to be over early.

A 3rd round stoppage for Pacquiao sounds a bit optimistic for a guy coming in for only his second fight above 135 against Ricky Hatton, who on fight night against Paulie Malignaggi, came into the ring weighing 156. This is going to be a hungry, snarling, strong Ricky Hatton who truly believes he is going to win this fight.

I think a lot of people are being whipped up by this media frenzy surrounding Pacquiao’s demolition of Oscar De La Hoya. They are forgetting the simple facts.

SIZE MATTERS!

Please can someone answer stryker’s question, cuz I wanna know as well. LOL

  • Bacardi says:

so, it wasn’t a 3rd or 6th stoppage after all… it came earlier. I guess sometimes logic doesnt sum mall things up.

  • lookingforperez says:

c’mon jack. stryker has a question for you.

  • Stryker says:

    so? did size matter?

  • REX GIACOMO says:

I saw Ricky Hatton interviewed on HBO, I think, a week or two ago and he had two black eyes from sparring. That tells you something right there. The guys are getting to him pretty good. And I don’t know how many southpaws he’s fought in the past. I don’t think he’s fought many. Remember the problems he had with (southpaw) Luis Collazo? He lost that fight even though he won on the cards. This is another reason I favor Pacquiao.

  • Stryker says:

    “size matters”. – Duh!
If hatton is 200 pounds, i might agree with you. I say – i might! coz in martial arts classes – i see heavy guys being thumped down by smaller guys. If you watch movies you see big guys being made sidekicks. In the real world – strongest man competitions are not won by the biggest athletes. bigger does not equate to stronger and better. If this is true in the real world – why will it not be true in boxing?
If hatton is heavier by even 20 pounds – no big deal.
if “size” is just what hatton brings to the ring – he is in trouble.
    Deeeeep trouble.

By the way Jack Herbert well rounded Article.

Rex get it in to your Head Pacman is not Superman. He has been beat you know more than Hatton for that matter!. Be a little more objective. Coming out with statements like a stopage in the 3RD or 6TH round is plan silly. Im English and a Hatton fan and I can see this is a hard fight with Pacman. Pacman has speed and footwork an all but hes far from invisible. Same as Hatton struggles with southpaws. This is a step more into the unknown for Pacman than it is for Hatton. Hatton is the best in the world at light welter he knows what to expect at this weight. Pacmans best wins all came against naturally smaller men and also did his (Losses) so this Fight result is far from a cut and dry affair. People on here get to caught up in supporting of their favourite that they only see and make judgements on how they are gonna win the fight. They ignore the opposite Fighters qualitys and I for one find this stance a little child like.

  • REX GIACOMO says:

Manny does not come at him straight forward as an orthodox power puncher. He comes with blinding speed and his punches are as unpredictable as the weather in England. Manny will not be as intimated as Malignaggi over Hatton’s bullying tactics and vaunted body punches. Manny knows how to fight bigger opponents as proven in most of his latest victories. The only guys he ever fought who went up his weight over the last five years were Oscar Larios and Jorge Solis, when Manny has yet to blossom into a complete boxer that he is now. Don’t ever believe Floyd Mayweather Sr. that he has found the perfect counterfoil to Manny’s unpredictable ways atop the ring. Remember Erik Morales who said many cannot fight going backwards? Well, Manny floored him with a left hook while backpedaling and his back against the rope during their grudge fight. Has anyone ever cornered Manny more than 10 seconds and connected five power punches in a row?

    No one.

  • REX GIACOMO says:

So many of Manny’s past opponents have belittled his speed and punching power until they come across him atop the ring. Hatton is falling into the same false sense of confidence. Manny does not dance around like Malignaggi and the Englishman’s lone tormentor Floyd Mayweather Jr. Manny jackrabbits his pace and has a rear gear as fast as his top speed. He will soon find that out on Sunday. Unless Hatton possesses the same guile and speed of hands as Juan Marquez does, he will realize that Pacquiao is not an easy target to hit bullseye. Manny is not a stationary target as the dart board in Hatton’s renowned pub house in Manchester, England.

  • REX GIACOMO says:

Not to disparage the Englishman but comes Sunday Manila time, he will meet is match and get outclassed in the weight he believes he is the king. If Paul Malignaggi was the barometer of speed when Hatton claims he can outbox a foxy opponent, then he is dead wrong. Malignaggi was quick but was not speedy. The guy whom he beat by TKO in the 11th round on November 22 last year is not in the class of Filipino terror-in-the-ring Manny Pacquiao. Malignaggi was quick with his feet and hands but he does not possess the leverage and power of Pacquiao.

  • Matt Porter says:

here you go again Rex…..3rd or 6th round? theirs no logic their whatsoever. Face it this is going to be his toughest fight. 3 fking rounds, Diaz lasted nine. As Tyson said everyone has a gameplan till the smacked in the face. Hattons used to being hit. Non one will have hit pac harder than Ricky.

  • REX GIACOMO says:

DON’T EVER THINK THAT PACQUIAO GOT NO POWER COS ON MAY 2ND HE WILL SHOW YOU ALL BRITISH FANS THAT HE INDEED GOT THE POWER.IT WILL BE SPEED, AGILITY AND RING GENERAL SHIP THAT WILL BE THE KEY ROLE FOR THIS FIGHT, WHO EVER GOT THE EDGE ON THIS DEPARTMENT WILL MOST LIKELY WIN.

PACQUIAO BY KNOCK OUT IN 3RD OR 6TH ROUNDS.

  • jordano says:

thank god that there is one writer on this so called website who has sense..I’ve got to say im impressed.. why can’t you write all of the articles jack, your colleagues are jokes, they just seem to have it in for british fighters. keep up the good work jack!

  • nepster77 says:

I agree with Ukansodoff in the fact that power can make a difference, however, I still think that Pacquaio’s speed, footwork, and boxing skills will make a bigger difference. As you can see in the ODLH fight, Pac’s power really couldn’t knock out DLH, but the accumulation of punches is what did him in. Same for the Diaz fight, it was the accumulation of punishment that did Diaz in. I feel this may be the case for Hatton-I’m going with PacMan by late round TKO, but I still think that Hatton’s power could give him a shot if he’s able to land a few power shots the way De La Hoya was not able to.

  • ukansodoff says:

I think the STRENGTH is what matters which you could say is whats meant. But some dont agree and im not 100% myself.

We just dont know if its a step too far for Pacquiao because this is his 1st time at this weight and the DLH fight doesnt count. So its far from a forgone conclusion that somethin is definatly guna happen.

Roach obviously believes 147 is a step to far which means he thinks 140 isnt. I tihnk it is but Manny really is brilliant what if hed picked some other 140 pounder like Malanaggi, i think hed have him.

But Hatton is a beast at this weight and hasnt just got the strength of a Lightwelter over Pacman hes got Hatton strength, hes a big strong bully whose bullied everythin put infront of him at 140, bigger and stronger men that Pacman.

  • nepster77 says:

Size will matter no doubt, and that’s why Manny is a slight favorite to win. All other aspects of boxing such as speed, footwork, and ability go to Pacquiao. However, if Hatton can impose his size and power on Pacquiao, it’s going to be a great fight. Pacquiao should win this in my opinion, but Hatton’s got a pretty decent puncher’s chance.

  • Mr. Nobb says:

no it doesn’t. Give me any sumo wrestler and il knock them out, i don’t care how big they are.
