Will Sparring With Pacquiao Help Khan’s Glass Jaw?

khan4342432By William Mackay: Freddie Roach still sees lightweight Amir Khan as a future champion, but it looks as if he’s going to take a slower approach and wait two or three fights before possibly throwing Khan to the wolves and putting him in with a top fighter in a world title fight. In the meantime, Roach feels that Khan will be better served by learning from his frequent sparring sessions with Manny Pacquiao.

Roach’s ideas seem quite reasonable because sparring with a great fighter like Pacquiao can’t help put make Khan a much better fighter, teaching how to deal with heavy pressure, faster punchers and fighters with a lot of power. But, none the less, I’m not so sure that it will help him at the end of the day take a punch any better than he does now.

It might not matter, though, because if Khan can learn enough how to deal with defending against a great fighter like Pacquiao, he might develop enough boxing skills to deal with a ferocious puncher like Juan Manuel Marquez or Juan Diaz.

Right now, I wouldn’t give Khan too much of a chance against either fighter based on his performance against Barrera. Khan was hit hard early and hurt in one instance at the end of the 2nd, and lucking out because it occurred at the end of the round. If Khan can improve enough defensively, he can overwhelm some of his opponents immediately with his offense.

i dont see that a glass chin boxer going that far if hes sparring with manny then he just has a greater chance of being koed by a good fihgter like manny in sprring…that little dude manny can pack a punch!

Khan can be a great fighter in the future. Constant sparring with Pacquiao is an oppotunity to bring him to a high level of compitence in his boxing skills. As an Asian Manny can help him develop his talent. Good luck Amir Khan.

It can’t hurt!! (well, maybe just a bit!!!!) He wont be able to improve his jaw, but he can certainly sharpen up his defence which has been pretty loose in the past. Lets not forget, the pacman has been stopped TWICE on his way up and now everyone is saying he is the greatest fighter on the planet. Roach is a good trainer and Khan already looks better under him, so now we all have to sit back and wait and see……….

Yes that’s my point though any boxer can get himself knocked out if he doesnt defend, but fair enough his chin does seem to be weaker than the average I just wish everyone wouldnt jump on the bandwagon!

No, Limmond is not a heavy puncher at all and was coming up a weight. Gomez is the same and he had Khan in trouble.

Check out the Prescott fight again, Khan was in trouble after a straight jab.

If he learns how to defend it will improve his chances of holding onto the (soon to be) vacant WBO that he will inevitably win.

  • Josh says:

how do you know it was not very hard? because it didn’t look it?

  • rob says:

willie limmond nearly knocked khan out last year from not a very hard punch..

  • Josh says:

Everyone keeps talking about khan’s chin but at the end of the day anyone can be caught out with lucky punches or through lack of defense e.g ONE OF the greatest heavyweights ever lennox lewis. So how do we know for sure that he does have a glass chin after hsi one KO defeat? I think it is people jumping on the bandwagon he’s either the greatest lightweigh prospect around or people are calling for him to retire if he looses!! You can’t win!

like chambers said, a glass chin does make it entertaining to watch when they have the power also, look at the list, Bruno, Magri, Haye, Macceranelli etc, Check out a fighter on youtube called Martin Concepcion, everytime he gets hit he’s in trouble but his knockout powers explosive

  • rob says:

how can it help? You can either take a punch or not.

  • ukansodoff says:

Sparring with Pacquiao round after round after round would improve anybody. He is after all the best in the business.

I think we all accept Khan has an awful chin and there not much in the sport you can do about it.

But you can help to give yourself more of a chance in the sport with such a poor chin with your defence and with the speed and variaty Pacmans guna be throwing at him hes facing more than most could offer in a real fight.

But ofcourse he wont be getting hit at full whack, Pacman wont be lookin to knock him out through sparring. But atleast he will be more prepared to dodge these types of shots in a real fight, and the less he gets hit theres less chance hes guna get knocked out. And who ever he faces would do well to throw stuff at the speed that Pacman does.

So ofcourse its guna help Khan, it obviously wont help his chin stand up to punishment but it will help him avoid some of it.

  • chambers says:

but his chin makes it all the more entertaining to watch him fight not all fighters are blessed with power, speed or a chin but they can still become genuine champions thats what makes this sport better then most you never know whats gonna happen

  • T-Bird says:

Its a difficult situation with khan he has got all the skills needed to be a champion. However the chin is a massive problem .he is going to get knocked out again its just a matter of how long it takes because you cant stop every shot and sooner or later he is gonna take a big shot then lights out………………………

  • fudgie says:

amir khan has the skills 2 go all the way the only person that can match his speed is Joan Guzman which would make a great fight once he’s ready.

at the moment I think the best route for amir is 2 go for the european title against the man that beat john thaxton then defend his belts against alex arthur mean while hopefully murray will fight presscot creating a fight with the winner.

once khan has proven himself this way i think he’ll be ready 4 a shot a someone like Paulus Moses defend his part of wba belt if wins against Michael Katsidis then look to unify the division after defending few times or drop down in weight and fight Roman Martinez!!!
