Will David Price Be The Next British Heavyweight Champion?

price42343535By William Mackay: Heavyweight David Price (1-0, 1 KOs) looked very impressive in taking out journeyman David Ingleby (6-25-1, 4 KOs) in the 3rd round on Saturday night at the Echo Arena, in Liverpool, England. Price, 25, delivered a walloping right hand that connected to the side of Ingleby’s head in the 3rd, sending the journeyman toppling forward on his face. Bleeding badly from his nose, Ingleby got to his feet, stumbled backwards and fell against the ropes.

The 6’8″ 250 pound Price looked awesome, showing power that few British heavyweights – or any others – can match. What was especially impressive in Price’s performance was his body shots, as he landed a lot of double hooks to the midsection of Ingleby and threw the shots with incredible power. Price did have a slight scare in the fight, when in the 3rd round he lost his mouthpiece and stopped fighting.

The referee told Ingleby to stop fighting. However, he didn’t hear the command and hit Price with a hard right hand to the side of Price’s head. It wasn’t a big deal, because Price took the shot without problems. But Ingleby probably wished he hadn’t done that, because as soon as the action resumed, Price went after Ingleby with vengeance, hitting him with some big shots and then knocking him down with a tremendous right hand to the head.

It’s still too early to tell how much better Price will get, but based on his performance against Ingleby, Price looks like he’s ready to be a major factor on the local scene almost immediately. He’s the biggest heavyweight in the UK, has the power and one of the best jabs I’ve seen in quite some time. Another British heavyweight Tyson Fury, 6’7″, is very interested in fighting Price in the near future.

I think that would be a bad idea of Fury, because Price seems to be a class above him in power, reach and seems to have the superior boxing skills as well. Price moves really well for a heavyweight , and reminds me of a younger version of Wladimir Klitschko.

Price does have some things he needs to work out in his game, specifically using his height and reach a lot more against his shorter opponents. But, I think that’s something that will easily be fixed. He’s already got the basic tools – power, reach, size and movement – to become an instant success in the sport.

Price looks as if he’s ready to be put in with much better competition already. I’d like to see him matched up against someone like Audley Harrison or Matt Skelton and see how he’d do against either one of them. I think he’d knock either of them out.

Another good opponent would be Martin Rogan, who recently defeated Skelton. He’s a good basic heavyweight with some decent skills. I think he’d be a perfect small time test for the young Price to cut his teeth on.

fury is a romany gypsy who have a long fighting and talking tradition hes only a kid and doesnt get it i dont think.Price looked a little eager to impress a large homecrowd which will inevitably lead to a little raggidyness an thats all it looked. he has fought on another level to any other young contender at present an has the full package fitness mentality skill an power not to mention hes got quick hands fury is barking up the wrong tree as price wud be stupid to bite right now fury says he wants to get to price before he gets knocked out maybe its before he develops a bit more as fury is ahead in them stakes ie pro ring time after a few fights i know any one whos knows boxing will see fury for wot he is a paranoid kid who spent 3 months calling out an amatuer!! hennessy wan na shut him up an exlplain the game to him cos that him finished when prices does him

Its to early to say whether he will be a world champion, but he looked good and I think he’l beat Tyson Fury. Tyson is just fat with NO power!

Not that its THE deciding factor Fury should be a little embarrassed by his physique I would be! he’s a professional boxer FFS train man, train!

I was impressed by David Price, thought he’s developed alot of patience which other like Larry Olubamiwo dont possess yet. Hes realised that hes fighting 6 rounders and is now picking his shots and timing his combinations. His body shots are especially deadly which shows hes trying to hurt his opponent before going for the knockout. Fury and Olubamiwo possess the power but not the mentality yet. I believe Fury has the most potential and with age comes a greater boxing mentality but at the moment I belive Price would win if they fought tomorrow. Fury is right though that Price does have a dodgy chin but thats to be expected after coming from amateurs, which Im sure will get stronger and with a little bit more defense will be better hidden. Fury can hardly talk though, Im sure Prices body shots would hurt him a lot no matter how fat he is.

  • Rogan would wipe the floor with price or fury at this stage in their careers. Harrison would be the best bet for both of them! Niether could lose against him.

  • Uncle Sam says:

Check out Tyson Fury’s devastating power and accuracy!

Larry Olubamiwo knocked-out Ingleby in two, one sooner than Price. Let’s not have irrational exuberance take the place of common sense.

price isnt ready to go in with rogan or skelton yet!he showed he has got real potential but for sum1 2 say hes ready 2 fight people as experienced as skelton or as batle hardend as rogan is laughfable.fury v price would b realy good but i agree with simon h n dont think it will happen until one is the champ and the other the mandertory or sumthing

  • chris says:

Rogan would be “a perfect small time test” for Price! My arse. Rogan would punch holes in Price!

  • SimonH says:

Fury v Price seems inevitable in the future. im not sure who I would pick to win. no-ones really tested fury largely. i cant see them fighting anytime soon. i imagine whoever gets the british title first, the other one will challenge.
