Marquez vs. Mayweather in September?

By Eric Thomas: According to the latest boxing news, Floyd Mayweather Jr. (39-0, 25 KOs) may be coming out of retirement for a September bout against boxing’s new number #1 Pound-for-pound star lightweight Juan Manuel Marquez (50-4-1, 37 KOs), who recently stopped Juan Diaz in the 9th round this past weekend at the Toyota Center, in Houston, Texas. Marquez, 35, called out Mayweather after the fight with Diaz on Saturday, saying that he’d like to move up to welterweight to face him there.
Mayweather reportedly wants to return to the ring by the end of the year and what better way to do it than to face a much smaller Marquez instead of a bigger, arguably more dangerous fighter like Miguel Cotto. Even against a smaller fighter like Marquez, Mayweather would be faced with a very difficult fight because Marquez specializes in counter punching much in the same way that Mayweahther does and he will no doubt make Mayweather pay for any shots he wants to land in the fight.

some people are blind….marquez was knockdown by pacquiao 3 times during their first fight…but was cheated 4 draw decision….second bout, marquez was knockdown during the 3rd round…

Again boxing is a sport and just because you dont’ like a boxer, doesn’t mean that you have to “HATE” him. If you don’t like, you just don’t like him and that’s it! but everybody’s got their own opinion! I do look forward to a Pacman vs. Marquez fight, i know they’re both good but of course i know that Marquez will win. Orale!
I too agree that boxing is not a racial fight. Who cares where the fighter comes from, as long as he’s a good fighter. I’m hispanic and I hate DeLaHoya and love PacMan. But let’s face it…Julio Cesar Chavez will always be the greatest. No competiton! For the Marquez v. Mayweather fight…I see Marquez whooping some butt. Don’t get me wrong, Floyd is a fast boxer but Marquez has confidence, balance, focus and power. Ask any real fighter and they’ll tell you exactly the same.
I just think it’s really funny when Pacquiao’s fans make it racial. Is it because Pacquiao is the ONLY boxer that they look up to? What’s the deal? Anyway Pacquiao is really good, but age will hit him and who will they look up to?…..boxing is a sport, it’s not a racial battle…i’m mexican, i will never miss a PPV match with mexican’s boxing, however i also like pacquiao and anyone that’s a good boxer, regardless of their race…..’nuff said!
i have watch JMM and pacquiao,im not satisfied coz i know its a draw. A third match between them is what im waiting for…im a filipino, and i bet for JMM against Mayweather, coz JMM is a good match against Pacquiao… clear as ice

I will second to Mark that Flloyd will want some assurance thats why he is degrading Pacman and boosting JMM instead to divert from the issues why would he fight a poor JMM rather than the best fighter Pacman?
for this to work Flloyd needs to raise JMM’s morale and praise him diverting to the point that he just want’s assurance!
I also agree on JMM can’t draw money, but guys if you were Flloyd would you fight one of the p4p fighter that can’t even get the tickets to be sold? you’ll say no of course! but against glory?

Im really excited to see JMM vs. Mayweather. the reason they rescheduled the fight was because mayweather wants to train properly,not because there not selling tickets.faking a rib injury come on. tickets are selling. come fight night that place will be sold out. i do believe JMM can beat Mayweather, but you never know. if Mayweather wins and wins convincingly i will give him alot of credit. Also look out for November Cotto vs. Pacquaio should be a great fight too. I do believe Cotto needs to get a trainer with alot of experience that makes a big difference in his career. and a huge impact on his upcoming fight with Pacquaio.

One thing you people dont know is that Marquez doesnt draw any money, every fighter knows that. Those fighters never want to fight Marquez because people never buys tickets, and ticket sucks when Marquez is in the fight card. That’s why they decided to postpone the Mayweather v Marquez fight due to low ticket sales, infact it should be sold out by now. Guess what! ticket sales still low.
All Fighters now-a-days fight for money, that includes Pacquiao, why, he wouldnt wanna fight Marquez? ummm… Low ticket sales! Marquez does not draw any money, thats the bottom line.
Mayweather thought hes the money maker in every fight ummm he’s wrong. He didnt know he is fighting against Marquez.
Look at Pacquiaos fights. Tickets are sold out even a month ahead, so, whos the money maker? I guess we can say agreeably its Pacquiao. If Pacquiao fights Marquez there wont be any money.

well dont get me wrong Pacman is a great fighter but i think jmm is a good fighter too and i think he will beat mayweather because the two fighters that mayweather fought(de la hoya sd in 12th) and hatton(ko in 9th) pacquiao bet the same fighters in less time (de la hoya 9thrd) and Hatton in the 2nd round and marquez is the only fighter that has stood up with paquiao and i think jmm will beat mayweather

Marquez may be too small for Mayweather, a catch weight of 143lbs would be perfect. But wherever I see it, this fight would be boring, specially with the runner Floyd around.

what really bugged me in the last fight was that Marquez had him beat and manny had to start getting reckless and headbutt Marquez to get out of a sure loss – look at his f’n eye in the fight – he was done…then look at the BIG smile on his face when he realized he cut him with a headbutt!

If this happens at welterweight it’s got TKO win for Mayweather written all over it. He’s fully capable at that weight, whereas JMM has just hit the groove not one, but TWO weights below. This isn’t at all like Pacman stepping up to face Oscar DLH.
Even with some ring rust, I see Mayweather being too elusive and too strong for a JMM who has taken a lot of punishment in some of his fights, who will be fighting well above his natural weight and who probably will take a lot of shots to land his own.
Would Mayweather be prepared to come back in at 140lbs? Probably not. Could he actually get down to that weight after so long out and fighting as high as 154lbs towards the end of his career? Probably not.
I’d prefer to see Cotto v Mayweather at welterweight to this. I’d prefer to see Hatton vs Mayweather at light-welterweight than this. I’d prefer to see JMM vs Manny III at any weight to this. Well, not literally any weight, but you get my drift.

Mayweather has been linked to everybody, but it is definately his style to want a naturally smaller fighter, Marquez shouldnt step up, its not going to be worth the hassle for him. Maybe Light Welterweight, but not Welter

Tipical Mayweather trying to land a big payday against an inflated great boxer who will only be a mere shadow of himself as soon as he moves up in weight.Marquez is a great fighter hall of fame material and has fought everyone out there no excuses.But hes 35 and he knows retirement is knocking on his door so he needs a huge payday before he turns old in between fights.Mayweather should fight the fighters that can push him to the next level cause honestly hes never been there and thats why boxing fans dont like him.
I also wont believe it til i see it. Marquez has a great chin. forget his flash knockdowns, to me hes definately P4P number 1 or 2 in the world. arguably better than pacquiao. I cant see it having huge PPV numbers, although i for one would love to see it. He’s as tough as they come around the lightweight/welterweight division and i just cant see Floyd taking a risk with it.
