Marquez Stops Diaz in 9th round TKO

By Sam Gregory: In the highly anticipated main event undisputed lightweight champion of the world Juan Manuel Marquez 50-4-1 (36 KO’s) is challenged by 25 year old Houston, Texan Juan “The Baby Bull” Diaz 34-2 (17) for Marquez’ lightweight title. This was Marquez’ second time to fight at the lightweight limit of 135 pounds.
From the opening bell both fighters fought from the center of the ring trading punches and going toe to toe; it was clear from the start both men were in for a battle tonight.
Early in the fight Diaz had the champion backed into the ropes as the challenger unleashed some nasty uppercuts to the head and body. Diaz looked like he did before his lose to Nate Campbell.
Diaz took his fight to Marquez, pushing him back and landing clean aggressive punches. Diaz imposed his will through the middle rounds but both men were fighting at a higher pace and skill level. By round five a cut opened above the right eye of Marquez.
By round seven Compubox statistics showed that Juan Diaz had thrown more power punches at Marquez up until that point in the fight than Marquez had received in any of his professional fights altogether. In the eighth round Diaz was caught by a left hook that opened a cut above his left eye.
In the ninth round Marquez picked up the pace backing Diaz into a corner and landed a combination that dropped Diaz. After one more attempt Diaz was dropped for the count in 2:40 of the ninth round. Juan Manuel Marquez won the fight by a knockout and retained the lightweight title.
Marquez improves his record to 50-4 with 37 knockouts. Juan Diaz falls to 34-2 (17) losing his first fight by a knockout.

wow! marquez proved he really is one of the best..i hope manny fights marquez before he retires…do you guys think marquez is better than morales and barrera?
Ive watched the Marquez vs Diaz fight 3 times now, fantastic bout, Diaz was superb, but Marquez showed grit and courage and a chin of granite as Diaz’s power shots hurt me and i was just watching it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dont want to see a Marquez v Khan fight, I like the reasoning behind Barrera coming out of retirement, he wants to be the first Mexican fighter to be a 4 weight champ so as to seal his legacy, for that reason alone i hope he succeeds, but after watching Marquez, i cant see him losing to Barrera!! Marquez has more chance of completing Barreras dream by stepping up to Light Welter and giving Bradley or Holt a boxing lesson. Id love to see a bout with Hatton but feel Hatton would be to strong.
Still, what a night!
For me, based on facts. There are a few reasons why Pacman don’t want to fight JMM again.
1. After their 1st match, Pacman asked for an immediate rematch offering JMM $800,000 but JMM declined saying arrogant words “Why should there be a rematch. Manny did not win”. Yet, JMM took on Chris John instead and lost for only $50,000. JMM refused the fight first and here he is bragging about Manny refusing. An eye for an eye. A tooth for a tooth.
2. JMM disrespected Manny in front of the Filipino people. JMM is a racist and aside from that, his fellow Mexicans doesn’t even like JMM because of his attitude.
3. JMM displays unsportsmanlike conduct. A very sour loser. He keeps saying that he never lost a single match and where did those 4 losses in record came from? He whines a lot and has tremendous amount of excuses lined up on his losses. A cry baby. He just can’t accept defeat.
Truly, he is a good fighter but the 3 items I mentioned are stains to his reputation. I can’t blame Manny for not accepting any future fight with Marquez.
If Marquez gets beaten in the future by anybody either Hatton, Cotto… still JMM would not accept defeat and definitely disrespect his aggressors nationality. Hope he reads this and change for the better.
I think pac man is affraid of JMM because he is the only one that has honestly hurt pac man. Manny is just waiting for JMM to get older so he can knock him out. Manny is still in his prime so time is on his side as JMM being over 35 his time is running out sad to say Jmm is the best. and like JMM said “manny doesnt want to fight me anymore so I have to go after the best which is Maywether” that would be an awsomw fight
Fantastic fight between Diaz and Marquez. Marquez showed a great chin and heart earlier on to absorb so much punishment, then comeback and win in such emphatic fashion. I actually had him behind on the scorecards after round 8, but thought he’d go on to win. I didn’t see the ending coming so quickly as the next round!

you are right, after watching this fight you realise how much work khan actually has to do to able to compete with these guys. From the evidence of early hours Sunday morning Khan wouldnt last 2 rounds with either Diaz or Marquez

A great fight, a great night. When Pacmans not there theres no question Marquez is the man at Lightweight.
On British telly they were sayin the winner of Khan – barrera should face the winner of this fight.
I cant see Khan lasting a minute against him or Diaz, then i dont even expect him to beat Barrera.
on the undercard was some guy with small platts or dreadlocks, he looked a very fast and hard hitter, knocked his guy out big time, wish i could remember his name. Jackson or something.

not a fight i ever thought of JMM Vs Mayweather but now its been mentioned the more i like the sound of it!!

juntab= if you don’t believe marquez is the best is ok .but if you want to see marquez vs pac you need to wait another 4 or 5 years or wait for 3 or more fights and than marquez gets older and weaker SO that way pacman can really defeated marquez,that’s the way pacman does,
Does not look like Khan has the chin to be in the ring with Marquez. But Diaz showed some boxer out there the blueprint to beat Marquez. I think a boxer like Hatton would be all wrong for Marquez. Let’s see how this plays out at 140.
I would believe that now Marquez is the best p4p in the world as the last two fighters hes beatn does not get any tufer. Its a shame really because if he did get the two desions on pacquiao and beat chris john which is obvisusly did he would be one of the great mexicans fighters. Im worried to hear if Khan beats berrea then he would challenge marquez. I just cant see any1 beating marques at the minute not only khan with his suspect chin? I want to see Marquez move up as there are big fights for him in jr.welterweight diviosn. That was hell,crazy i love boxing i no see a fight like that in a long time Marquez is great he have a lot of heart and hes very intellegent thanks Diaz for the show he is a brave one.
What a fight good action and great finish, if Khan takes on Marquez next i will cry, coz who wants to watch that fight, when Marquez has so many options, khan is at international level, Marquez is top class.

I have to give it to Marquez, he endures punishment in the early roungd because he knows his steady hard shots will wear his opponent down. Diaz could have pulled this fight off had he been better defensively and continued to use the fast combinations which backed Marquez to the ropes. Marquez has moved to 135 and knocked out the two top fighters… extremely impressive. I am now interested in seeing another PacMan-Marquez fight (regardless of outcome of Hatton-PacMan).

what a fight! and thats true pacquiao does seem to have the edge over marquez but i’d still like to see them do it one more time. i cant see hatton beating manny tho. he seems to think its a foregone conclusion cos he’s never been beat at light-welter but its not by a long shot. pacquiao’s in mayweather’s league and look what happened there ricky!
even if they fight 100 rounds, the fight is still going to be close. pacquiao has the edge by knocking marquez down, who ever blink loses and marquez paid the price, i would love to see both of them fight again
if marquez did not get his ass whipped out by being knocked down 4x in 24rounds, , he would have won both fights. thats boxing dude!!! pacman is the better fighter,
after hatton gives the pac man a good hideing,manny can give marquez his deserved rematch.i’ve said this before the fools who keep saying pacmans pfpno1 are deluded coz in mine and many other peoples eyes marquez won the 2nd fight and only the 3 knockdowns in their first fight saved pacmans skin.i really believe marquez would give hatton a harder fight and feel sorry for him as he should be fighting and earning the mega fights,but was cruelly robbed by the 3 blind mice that judged the rematch with pacman.
