Hopkins Still Wants Calzaghe Rematch: Why Not Dawson?

hopkins5746By William Mackay: Possibly still smarting from his 12-round split decision loss to Joe Calzaghe (46-0, 32 KOs) in April 2008, Bernard Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KOs) reportedly wants a rematch with Calzaghe to try and clear up the close loss between the two fighters. Unfortunately for Hopkins, Calzaghe closed up shop and decided to retire from the sport rather than give Hopkins his much needed chance for revenge. It doesn’t appear at this point that Calzaghe is going to be coming back now or ever, no matter how much money is offered to him.

That, of course, could change if something drastically where to effect his financial status, yet even then it’s highly doubtful that Calzaghe would opt to face Hopkins, who made the pre-fight difficult for Calzaghe with his constant gamesmanship that took place.

The big question is, why is Hopkins choosing to fight Calzaghe rather than Chad Dawson (27-0, 17 KOs), the IBF light heavyweight champion, and the fighter far and away considered to be the best fighter in the division by many.

That would seem like the logical move for Hopkins if he’s concerned with finishing his career on a strong note. Hopkins already has a feather in his cap with his recent 12-round decision over middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in October. Beating Pavlik was great for Hopkins, but then again Pavlik isn’t a light heavyweight like Hopkins and had to come up in weight to fight him at 170.

Even then, Pavlik was at a weight disadvantage against Hopkins, who came into the bout weighing in the mid 180s. Hopkins, the bigger, faster and stronger fighter of the two, ended up having a surprisingly easy time beating Pavlik. However, beating Pavlik is nothing given his lack of size and speed.

It seemed obvious to me that Pavlik would lose because he’s built up his reputation against one good fighter in his career – Jermain Taylor – with the rest of them being fighters of average ability. Taylor made it easy for Pavlik by trying to slug with him. In hindsight, it was a dumb thing to do for Taylor and he ended up paying for it twice in losses.

As you can see, the win over Pavlik wasn’t all that special when you consider Kelly’s limitations. As for Calzaghe, Hopkins needs to give up on that idea and move on mentally past that fight. Sometimes a fighter just has to accept that they lost, own it, and then move forward and try to make the best of things with their career.

A win against Pavlik was a good start, but in reality not all that fair because of his size advantage over the smaller, slender Pavlik. Instead of facing middleweights, Hopkins, a light heavyweight, needs to fight the best fighter in his own division, and that would be Dawson.

Hopkins has already said that he doesn’t want to fight Dawson because he doesn’t want to take away from the sport of boxing by beating all the top young fighters in boxing. However, I have grave doubts that Hopkins could beat a fighter as good as Dawson.

Whatever the case, Hopkins can surely wait around for Calzaghe and hope that he’ll come out of retirement but he may end up waiting an awful long time and end up throwing away the little time he has left. I think Hopkins would be better served to move on and take a fight with Dawson. Sure, Hopkins will probably lose but he’ll get a lot of respect by facing a top light heavyweight with blazing fast speed, good size at 6’3” and with the ability to box circles around Hopkins.

I can understand Hopkins wanting to fight Calzaghe but not Dawson. Hopkins does not want/need a belt… he wants to protect his legacy. If Calzaghe does not provide the opporunity, the only other fight I can see Hopkins wanting is Jones (but Jones’ standing has been severely diminished).

of course this article is utter nonsense – as all of it on this site…
and to ukansodoff…… or course Calzaghe “won” and his arm was “rised”, but for me it’s not always that simple. Judah’s arm was rised in this fight, and Roy Jones lost in Seul, as his opponents hand was rised. To be absolutely honest – this fight was more like: is two pitty-pats worth more than one proper punch. For me it’s the later. for the judges it wasn’t – and that’s ok. But either way you look at it, it was very close and not very decisive. Similar to Dawson vs Johnson. I’ll always pick a puncher to win with pitty-patter, but some judges prefer “fetching” over hitting. nothing against Calzage – he did what he always does. But if it was only about “who’s hand is rised” in the end, then there would be no scandalous decisions….
And again – decision in Calzaghe vs Hopkins wasn’t scandalous at all – it was just the matter of the judges preferences. No one dominated this fight, and the only spectacular moment of it was in the 1st round when B-Hop put Calzaghe on his butt. I do understand why they gave it to Calzaghe, but I would understand why the could have given it to Hopkins. Put different jugdes in there and you have a different verdict…..

Chad Dawson is a nobody thats why. Hopkins wants Calzaghe because hes a somebody and by beating Calzaghe hopkins will have another “name” on his record.
But he wouldnt beat Joe. Joe won last time and he’d do it again. in more of an impressive fashion aswell

does chad dawson own this site or something why do all you writers big him up so much. UNDERSTAND THIS THERE IS NO MONEY IN FIGHTING CHAD DAWSON THAT IS WHY NOBODY WANTS TO.he is a decent fighter with decent power and ok boxing skills but at the moment he is just the best of a bad division.

Good article, again I would agree that Hopkins is great, not always pretty but he generally gets the job done. Hopkins was bad against Calzaghe, ugly, sneaky and tried to steal the fight. Classic Hopkins was the Hopkins against Pavlik and Delahoya.

I’d love to see him fight Dawson who as much as I like his persona is at this stage a little hyped up. What a finish to Hopkins career to beat the man at the weight.

Hopkins says he doesnt want to take anything away from the sport by beating all its young stars, so why fight Pavlik, yes there was nothing to lose title wise, but Pavlik was an unbeaten fighter until then. I think his statement says it all “doesn’t want to take away from the sport of boxing by beating all the top young fighters in boxing”, he already thinks the fight is won before getting it on in the ring.

B-Hop lost, he got beaten by calzaghe even tho Joe wasnt at his best in the fight and as for Dawson, whois has be beat for u all to give him god like status, a 40 year old tarver? Is anyone forgettin he should have lost to Glen Johnson, who wouldnt beat B-Hop now let alone Joe Calzaghe!!!! The people who write on this site truly know nothing. I remember how much they wrote off mosley before the last fight, u got proved wrong and u will continue to do so. B-Hop should fight Kessler, Dawson should fight Glen Johnson again and then the winners of those fights should fight each other. simple

  • tyrone roberts wales says:

joe wON that fight, and they building dawson up as the next best thing like they did with pavlik. u dont have to come from THE USA TO BE A GOOD BOXER. THEY GOOD, BUT NOT AWESOME LIKE U AMERCIANS THINK

  • jollystomper says:

dawson hasnt proved himself yet! hes beaten a weight drained adamek, luckily got a decision against a faded johnson & couldnt even ko 40yo tarver!! + he isn`t a big name yet!
why would hopkins or calzaghe choose to fight him!
he should rematch johnson, move up to rematch adamek!, kessler or the winner of taylor froch!
if he won any of these fights (if he decisivly beat johnson)
    he would gain my respect!
im not saying hes not a good fighter coz he obviosly is but he needs to prove himself before fighting super stars like joe or b-hop!

even a fight with clinton would improve his resume!(if he won?)

  • ding a ling man says:

I mean adamak goes for the best names

  • ding a ling man says:

At least Dawson goes for the biggest fights unlike bad chad i must fight a grandad again

  • ukansodoff says:

Jason, Calzaghe beat Hopkins, Theres thousands of people saw it in the arena, 2 boxers, 3 judges, a ref, loads of people saw it on telly too.

I remember the night well. Calzaghe is the one who had his arm raised at the end of the 12th.

As far as i remember that indicates the winner of the bout.

  • jason says:

U are right, some fighters just have 2 accept dat they lost and move on…….but Bernard did NOT LOSE dat fight,Joe did,Bernard beat Joe dat night!!! and I hope he does get a rematch and dis times knocks out Calzaghe!!!
