pav6678Photo credit: Sumio Yamada – By Sam Gregory: In the first round Pavlik lands a couple significant blows that get Rubio’s attention. Pavlik throws a flurry of punches as he backs Rubio into the ropes. Two big right hands stun Rubio as the round ends, clearly a big round for Pavlik.

In round two Pavlik backs Rubio into the ropes with a strong flurry of punches. Several hard rights land for Pavlik; Rubio throws a combination that glances off Pavlik. Another strong round for the champ from Youngstown.

In round three Rubio finally lands a left hook but Pavlik comes right back with a flurry of punches that backs Rubio to the ropes. Rubio lands a left hook but its too little too late, another big round for Pavlik.

Round four begins with Rubio backing into the ropes as Pavlik lands a solid right followed by a three punch combination. Rubio spent most of the round with his back to the ropes; another solid round for Pavlik.

Pavlik starts round five by landing a solid right hand to Rubio’s head. Rubio is again backed into the ropes as Pavlik fires his combinations at will. Rubio did nothing offensively the entire round. Another round in the books for Pavlik.

Round six starts much the same way round five ended, Pavlik taking target practice and landing punches at will. Rubio did land two right hands by the end of the round. Pavlik’s round.

In round seven Pavlik walks Rubio down backing him against the ropes. A flurry of punches and a straight left jab keep Rubio against the ropes until the end of the round. Another round for Pavlik.

Pavlik starts round eight by landing a solid right cross. Rubio lands a lunging right hand. They trade punches but Rubio gets the worst of it. Pavlik flurries to end the round. Rubio survives but he’s taking a beating. Possibly a 10-8 round for Pavlik.

Round nine starts with Pavlik letting his hands go in the center of the ring; Rubio throws a few punches that have little effect on the champion. A straight right and a left hook back Rubio into a corner as Pavlik finishes the round strong.

The fight ends before round ten starts. A very one-sided win for the middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik.

I was impressed with Pavlik tonight. I think before his fight with Hopkins he was fighting an exciting “All-Out” style. That style can work for lesser opposition, but as the talent improves the harder it gets which was one reason why he lost to Hopkins so badly. Given another fight at 160 using the style he used in this fight, I don’t think the outcome would be the same. Something I really liked in this fight was I noticed Pavlik was much much lighter on his feet, he wasn’t as flat footed as he normally is and his defense was also much improved and focused. I think people tend to forget that he is still very young and has a lot of room for improvement, if he continues on this path, there’s no telling where he could take it. Rubio was terrified of getting KO’d, geez man take a chill pill Marco!

Haven’t seen this one, but it played out as expected. There is only one real challenge for Pavlik in his weight class, and it’s Arthur Abraham. (with exeption of Williams who can fight anywhere from 147 to 168).
I’d like to see Pavlik vs Abraham. It’s really cool for the fans, as no one knows what will happen. For me it’s Abraham breaking Pavlik in half at some point.
Another one I’d like to see is Abraham vs Hopkins – but that’s another story:)

Rubio was not interested from the first minute just happy to survive , he took his licks but never tried to win the fight , Pavlik again loked very predictable

This is where Promoters (Bob Arum) stink up the sport. Bob has Cotto and Pavlik and one of the most feared men in boxing(Paul Williams) can make weight for either one of them. It would for sure be a money fight and fans would support it, especially for Pavlik-Williams in Atlantic City N.J. Watch, Bob will dodge and put another damper on the sport by doing something awkward.

that was a good workout for pavlik! but he still needs a lot to improve.. he has to change from being a one-dimensional fighterand improve his defense if he wants to belong to the elite! it’s my first time to see this rubio and he looks ordinary to me, nothing like anything i’ve heard on paper.

Pavlik seemed quite hesitant last night, he started with his jab, then he started to double it up, then that was it. Ive seen him take the 3rd step and start combo,s but not last night.

Though it was his return from a loss fight, a big loss at that, maybe that was the game plan, Rubio didnt offer anything, there was no rush.

I suppose its not like hes havin to get back on the challenger list and had to really impress, he still has his 3 belts. Hes still the top dog.

Pavlik could’ve put a stop to Rubio a whole lot sooner. He did not impress me at all. Hopkins did it to him! He’s just an average fighter.
