Margarito To Fight In Mexico

margo452347By William Mackay: So much for Antonio Margarito’s year-long boxing license revocation that was brought down on his head today by the California State Athletic Commission. Margarito’s promoter, Bob Arum, is already looking to set up a fight for him in Mexico while he appeals the ruling and attempt to fight it in California courts. Whether the suspension for the said illegal hand wraps that Margarito was wearing prior to his January 24th fight with Shane Mosley holds up or not, it won’t hamper Margarito from fighting through the year long revocation.

That’s something that the California Commission unfortunately have no power in controlling. Arum plans on placing Margarito on one of the PPVs this Summer, probably in June, and predicts that the fight card will sell an estimated 200,000 to 300,000 buys. That’s a lot of revenue if it turns out to be the case, making the revocation of Margarito a mere slap on the hands for him.

However, before he can get back his license, Margarito will have to first apply and then come up before the panel and they might not necessarily give him back his boxing license. And, given that other states often follow the suspensions in one state, Margarito could be kept from boxing for a long time in the U.S if things work badly for him. I tend to doubt that will happen, though, because this is a muddy case and there’s no prove that Margarito knowingly had the illegal wraps put on.

Margarito apparently had no idea that his wraps were illegal or that they possibly contained an foreign substance, according to his attorney who argued his case today in front of the commission in Van Nuys, California.

The problem for the commission is that they have no way of knowing whether what Margarito says is true or not, and seem to have penalized him for something that he may have had no knowledge about, because his trainer Javier Capetillon has taken all the blame for the mistake, saying that he pulled out an old pair of previously used hand wraps from his bag and put them on Margarito.

As of now, the plaster like substance which this whole case seems to be based on, hasn’t been analyzed yet by a lab. Until the lab results come out, the suspension might be a bit premature because it could turn out to be nothing and leaving the commission with egg on their face.

Margarito lives in Mexico, so if Arum can line up any fights there, Antonio would be right at home fighting in front of friendly audiences.

As a Mexican I was very upset on what Margarito has done. Despite the issue if you have the boxing skills as Mosley did in their fight, no matter what you can still beat a cheater. I would like Margarito to re – match all of the big fights he had in the past. Even with that I still think he’ll knock some of the fighters out, and others may get the best of him. When it comes to a re – match with Cotto who is a great fighter to my opinion not only for the Puerto Ricans, but for the latin race as well. I still believe that Margarito will take it to him. Cotto doesn’t have the punching power to hurt Margarito. Cotto will wear himself out like in th first fight. Margarito will knock him out!!

  • Edgar Cintron says:

Oh and by the way Jeff and many others; What results from a lab is important in this situation? Plaster is not hard to figure out! We all know what it looks like don’t we?

The lab excuse is an issue of money! They will not in a million years let the rematch in June go pass. It will happen, there is way too much money involved.

We might here that the lab gave a go ahead to let Margarito’s life get tarnished by Cotto but we will not forget about the actual truth. I bet you would, untill you see the diference during that rematch. You can deny it all you want but Mosely showed you and I bet you still have your eyes closed.

  • Edgar Cintron says:

Hey Jeff; WHAT EVER; You make no sense what so ever. Do you know what boxing is. I have friends of all ethnicity and we all see the same things.
What Margarito do you watch!!??? LOL

  • Roger Lopez says:

What a shame this is. As a Mexican I was very disapointed in what Margarito and Capetillo tried to get away with. I am pretty sure it’s not the first time they did this. If there is any way to prove if Margarito had loaded gloves in the Coto and Cintron fights they deserves to turn those losses into no-contests. And if he did use that hard paste on his gloves they should be banned from boxing forever.

Team Mosley did draw up a perfact game plan on how to fight Margarito. He knew when to punch and when to hold. If Coto would have known when to clinch and rest I think he would have won by decission.

jose and edgar you guys are definitely puerto rican taking all that credit away from margarito, nothing has been proven to be “paste” yet but whats the point of a rematch with cintron, margarito knocked him out twice and the first time only with a few slaps! besides fighting in puerto rico hell be robbed like did when figthing daniel santos 2, fight stoppage convenient to santos. (doctor stopage)

Fighting Cotto in Puerto Rico would be like fighting the devil in hell! (That’s no disrespect to Puerto Ricans) they would create an incredible…Yet very intimidating atmosphere! Especially for Margarito! And nothing more than he deserves!
Im pretty sure Cotto has gained a lot of confidence from all of this coming out, and im sure he will be a world beater again! Still doesn’t take away that loss on his record though… Which at the end of his career may be the only one on his record and that would be a huge shame!
I know a lot of people will say you cant prove he used this hardened substance against Cotto.. Well look at it like this.. If he did beat Cotto in such a destructive fashion without the hardened substance then why did he feel the NEED to use it to beat Mosley!
    Sorry doesn’t make sense!

  • Jose says:

Whatever happened to respecting the decisions of a boxing commission? Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. and I am sure will reciprocate in respecting
the decision, just like all other states. If, Bob Arum refuses to respect the decision and fights in Mexico, then the reapplication of the license should not be considered. But, we live in a money first world and values do not seem to be in the picture. Great decision to revoke the license. It should have been a lifetime ban. He could have killed an opponent. And yes, M Cotto is a great boxer, much, much better than Margarito. No rematch is necessary now. Cotto is a class boxer, and class always wins. And by the way, I am willing to bet that the substance, when analyzed, will prove to be , well, ”plaster like”.

Now it all makes a whole lot of sence. What a DIRTBAG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Edgar Cintron says:

Cotto wasn’t using any body shots. He would’ve had Marg. a short time into the fight if he did. Mosely did it at a good time. Mosely and Cotto do have similar styles except Cotto’s a much better body pucher. That was how he beat Mosely.

Margarito never was an exciter fighter to watch in the first place. “I always thought 10 of his punches can equal to one, lucky punch,” but Mosley sure let the world see that Margarito is not what the Mexicans and commentators made him out to be.

Both Cotto and Cintron deserve thier rematch and not in Mexico!!!!!!!!!!

  • Edgar Cintron says:

I agree with jono… It’s a shame for someone to make it sooo far… Determined to be the first Puerto Rican to retire undefeated, then, get’s ripped off in an extremely dirty fashion… That’s why Cotto hasn’t said a word… Margacheeto is going to get his asssssssss woooooooooped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In Puerto Rico!!!!!!

  • jono says:

as part of his punishment i think i re-match should be made for him to fight cotto in Puerto Rico.
    Cotto deserves that re-match.
Mosley has drew up a perfect blueprint for beating margo.. and badly!
Cotto has the boxing ability to do the same!
