By Sam Gregory: – Photo: Tom Casino/Showtime – In tonight’s main event newly crowned IBF cruiserweight champion Tomasz “Goral” Adamek of Jersey City and Golwice Poland made his first defense of the title with an impressive eighth round stoppage over undefeated cruiserweight challenger Johnathon Banks in 1:30 of the eighth round
The taller Banks was able to land some solid right hands in the opening round driving Adamek back. Going into the second round both fighters landed a pretty equal amount of punches.
By the fourth round Adamek started cutting off the ring and landing some counter punches moving Banks back. Adamek did get rocked by a shot from the challenger in the middle of the round. Adamek spun of the ropes and countered; the crowd erupted every time Adamek lands a punch.
These middle rounds are very close to score. There were very few clinches in the fight; Eddie Cotton had to push the two apart for the second time in the fight in the sixth round. Banks hit with a low blow in the sixth. Adamek had a big round scoring big with body shots in round six.
By the seventh round Adamek out punches Banks 3 to 1, taking control walking Banks back and finishing with body punches.
Adamek caught Banks with a right hand counter punch; he’s down in the corner. Worn down by body shots Banks was dropped 1:30 of the eighth round.
Tomasz Adamek improves his record to 37-1 with 25 knockouts. Johnathon Banks suffers his first defeat and falls to 20-1.

Adamek is not American he has been there since 1 year. So until his 32 he was living in Gilowice small town in Poland.
Hmmm. Adamek is definitlely not American…:) Yet he lives in US… I’m wondering why?
Well no surprise here another american with fairly good pedigree being built up as a god, banks is ok seen him fight a couple of times….See the things is young americans would rather throw a baseball or a basketball than fight now and thats a fact…. the future of boxing lies over the pond now and i think we all know it…. Im just watching our OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST ON TV JAMES DE GALE looks good, well he would be he won a GOLD in bejing………………
No shock just good boxing! Banks had been built up to something he could not live up to. His demise was not in that he is a “bad” boxer he is just not as good as the Polish champion. Banks will be back but thanks to Adamek we now know that Banks can be beaten and KO’d.
Adamek is an example of a boxer who was probably not fighting at his optimum weight division. He is more dangerous at Cruiser than he was at Light Heavy. I’m glad he’s being successful. Same thing with Hopkins keeping himself at middle weight late in his career when he should have moved up.
i wasnt shocked at all. Of course, had Banks have won, he’d be labelled the next best thing and comparisons with how Enzo Macaranelli and David Haye is ducking him would be made, despite the obvious Haye step up in division.
However, as they didnt label him this, they can slide this one under the carpet.
Was this a shock or not? Ive been strugglin to make my mind up.
Something i have noticed and think i should point out seeing as some Americans on here are super biased and all that.
Any American boxers that have any blood line what so ever to any other country make sure to point out that they indeed have links to these other countrys. Are they that ashamed to be called American?
And then you have the none Americans plying their trade within the USA, The article writers are quick to try make out theres something American about them (even though there isnt) the minute they strt becoming sucuessful or look to have a bright future.
