By Sam Gregory: In a very evenly matched action packed fight on ESPN’s Friday Night Fight’s in Montreal, Miami based Columbian Juan Urango won the vacant IBF Jr welterweight title in a unanimous decision over local favorite Herman Ngoudjo. Urango improved his record to 21 wins with 16 knockouts and only losing one. The Cameroon born Ngoudjo fell to 17 wins with 9 knockouts and three loses.

The fight looked very even from the opening bell; the official punch count had both fighters throwing 66 punches in the first round. The onetime IBF belt holder and southpaw Juan Urango fought in a very unorthodox style, he never threw one jab in the fight instead he threw wide looping punches but they got the job done as he scored two knockdowns in the third round. His wild punches did get him warnings for low blows in the fourth and tenth rounds.

Herman Ngoudjo was a very game fighter throughout the fight using combinations and landing the straighter seemingly more accurate punches. The fight looked very close throughout the fight, certainly closer than the official judge’s score cards; 118-108, 120-106 and 116-110.

In the tenth round of this fight there was a problem with the time keeper; the tenth round actually went five (5) minutes and ten seconds before the bell was rung.

Coming into this fight Herman Ngoudjo had two losses on his record; the first coming from a closely contested split decision with Jose Luis Castillo in January of 07’ and the other a unanimous decision he lost to Paulie Malignarri last January.

Juan Urango’s only lose on his record was a 12 round unanimous decision he lost to Ricky Hatton two years ago; his most recent ring activity was three straight wins; one by KO, the other two by TKO.
