Shocking News: Khan vs Barrera!

barrera334By Simon Hirst: Frank Warren seems to have pulled a rabbit out of the hat in landing Lightweight prospect Amir Khan a huge fight against former three-weight world champion Marco Antonio Barrera. This is a huge fight for a fighter coming off a shock first round knockout some six months ago.

The Mexican, who is scheduled to fight Nate Campbell later this year, has a wealth of experience after a trilogy with Erik Morales and his two fights with Manny Pacquaio. He is also famous for being the first man to beat Britain’s own Prince Naseem Hamed. Of course, he is not the same fighter as these wars have took a lot out of him, but he should still prove to be a tough opponent for Amir Khan.

It was originally thought that Khan would be fighting Alex Arthur, a former world champion at super featherweight after his second round knockout of Oisin Fagan. However, opting for a fight against a former three weight champion should give Khan plenty more experience. Barrera showed he was not ready to retire after beating little known Sammy Ventura two months ago inside four rounds.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Amir’s promoter Frank Warren said “This is a huge step up for Amir who had some serious thoughts about it. The discussions over the fight finished at 4am this morning.

“It’s a big fight for Amir who has been champing at the bit. This is the right fight for Amir at this stage of his career.

“I believe it will bring out the best in him. This puts him well and truly on the world stage.”

The fight could have come at a crucial time for Khan with Barrera aging, not being a big puncher and with trainer Freddie Roach, who also trains Pacquaio, they have the blue print on how to beat Barrera. Whether this would affect Barrera’s title challenge or simply be turned into an official elimator against Campbell remains to be seen.

  • mossy99 says:

Like Nasseeem, the old warrior will give Amir a boxing lesson. To go the distance with the master will be hard work for Khan so i reckon a late finish but a win for Barrera .

  • Ko King says:

If khan wins he’ll be the best thing ever. If he loses it’ll be against one of the greatest ever. Unless khan gets blasted out early he can’t lose. Its a gamble but i’ll take barrera tko late rounds or points. Khan will fade after 6 rounds he should’ve showed some heart and went back in with Prescott for a rematch instead of running like the lil girl he is.

    Hi,

I hope Barerra knocks his BLOCK OFF – this is obviously a marketing excercise to try and get Khan up the ladder quickly by putting him the ring with one of the world greatest who everyone knows, is not his best anymore due to his age. I really hope Khan loses and then learns to get up the ranks like every other boxer. Go Barrera!

  • Riz says:

If Khan wins this Prince Naseem Ahmed will look stupid and Khan will get his name. But if he loses that will be his second loss n most probably hell look stupid

  • Tom.D says:

If khan gets hit he will lose and come on the chances of him getting hit are very high.

  • peter says:

Khan is mad. He takes on a load of nobodys and then takes on one of the best boxers ever. He took on presscott and lost, who was prescott. Khan’s gonna get a good old fashioned beating and he’ll never get a chance at a title.

  • Adam says:

Berrera is gonna kill Khn.Battle tested or not.Berrera has taken alot of time off since those battles.Khan is no match.Berrera by TKO round 6.

  • A - Force says:

    Come on Kahn!

  • dave says:

    wow

i honestly didn’t expect this to be fair. i thought that khan would prehaps fight 2-3 “lower” opponents before taking a fight like this. can he win? i’m not sure. barrera is very ring wise but if he can pull it off then we should see khan challenging for a world title in the next year and would give him a huge confidence boost as well as much more. should be a great fight.

  • ding a ling man says:

Cant critisce Khan for taking this one, even if Barrera ain’t what he once was. However Khan has to slow down the pace for this one, as Marco will always have his experience and he’s not the kind of fighter you want to get tired against. Still I just see him landing a few decent shots eventually and taking Khan out. Good fight for the fans though.
